Full-Metal-Wizard skin

Post by peteru » Tue Sep 29, 2015 14:28

A new skin named Full-Metal-Wizard is available in beta firmware 20150928 and later. This skin is pre-installed in the base firmware and can be activated by using Setup / AV Setup / Skin Setup

Here's my feedback for the skin author:

* The yellow and green coloured buttons look too similar. There needs to be more difference in the colour.
* The screen that shows what software updates are available now uses a proportional, rather than fixed, font and this breaks the formatting.

Hi Jai,

What editor are you using to edit the XML files?

Then he'll need to be sent off to a Unix re-education camp ;)

In text files, Microsoft DOS (and Windows) use the control characters <CR><LF> (Control-M, Control-J) to mark the ends of lines.

Unix just uses <LF> to mark the ends of text lines.

It's one of those Microsoft-Unix religious war things :)

Ok, I edited the files in Dreamweaver, now you should know that I have no coding experience at all, I have in the past changed a few things for our websites by basically searching xml files for images and changing or editing them, that is how I got started with this new skin and then it snowballed from there.

In this new skin I did change the fonts but I really did use a dodgy method, in the skin xml where it gives a key for each font used I basically just changed all the font keys to the font that I wanted to use  not the best method of course but it achieved what I wanted for a first effort. Iansav did assist me with a few bits and pieces like dropping the general menu and gave me some insight into how he did it so I got a little bolder and started playing with positioning of some of the other items etc but there was not too much that I changed, maybe just the info bars I think.

I was planning on putting together a post from a novice perspective to encourage some of our less experienced guys to have a tinker, if you have a recommendation for a editor to use or a method to editing xml files for beginners let me know and I will include it in my post..

Hi Jai,

I use Win32Pad as my quick "go-to" editor for text files that may/will live on UNIX machines. It is more or less a simple Notepad replacement. There are a number of free editors out there that will allow you to select the desired EOL characters. (VIM, Notepad++ are two others that spring to mind.)

I seem to remember that Dreamweaver has an option to create a UNIX friendly version of files. (Web development has, by design, been created to ignore EOL issues but this is not a general web development environment.)

Regards,
Ian.

Native Windows tools tend to use Windows/DOS conventions for text files. IIRC NotePad can't even read Unix-style text files properly at all. TextPad(?) can read Unix-style text files OK, but writes them out as WIndows-style files.

It's possible that Dreamweaver has a preference that allows it to read and write Unix-style files.

I do most of my editing for the Beyonwiz firmware on OS-X, which is Unixoid enough for everything I use to work the way I expect it to.

As for the way you changed the fonts, IMO, that's the completely correct way to do it. The only possible problem would be that the fonts may not have exactly the same heights and widths and bits of text might get cut off because they no longer fit in their boxes. So far I haven't sen any evidence of that, but I haven't looked at Full-Metal-Wizard skin much yet.

But even though it's more text, the change in the font makes the truncation more noticeable.

I'd also prefer the ends of the coloured button hints to be less pointy. Round rather than elliptical, perhaps?

Agreed. I actually think that the same shape as the MENU / INFO / TEXT / HELP buttons would work well. Basically rectangles with rounded corners.

The pixmap for the "unhandled button" popup doesn't blend correctly with backgrounds of UI screens.

E.g. from live TV, MENU>Setup, then TIMER (or any other inactive button for the context).

The "cross" popup punches a hole in the Setup screen background.

The pixmap size needs to be shrunk to match the actual content of the pixmap. The skin that displays the pixmap needs to be adjusted accordingly: in widget UnhandledKeyPixmap in screen UnhandledKey in skin.xml.

I also don't think there's enough contrast between the text colour and the button colour on these two button hints.

I think that all the coloured button hints have a bit of a "jelly bean" look about them that I don't like that much.

The image used for the RADIO background is an AutoCad MVI file. The file is "/usr/share/enigma2/skin_default/radio.mvi". I don't believe I have a tool that can edit such a file. I can try overlaying a static image if you would like.

Update: I haven't found where "radio.mvi" is loaded. I will come back to this if someone really wants the image changed.

Ian.

It's not an AutoCAD file at all. It's an MPEG-2 file with one i-frame. It's skinnable. Just put your own version in the skin directory. You can also override it with a custom file. Put your custom radio.mvi in /etc/enigma2/

I agree with prl. The existing image is a bit juvenile.

Perhaps changes can be made to expand its appeal.

Hi, has anyone else noticed this grey bar slightly obscuring the nice background, just above the text on the full metal skin when pausing a recording?
(you might have to look hard to see it)

I don't get it when pausing live TV, only on recordings. Otherwise, I love this skin, wish I'd installed it earlier.

That's present on the default skin too. You can press EXIT to dismiss it.

The have been mutterings about changing that navigation bar so that it takes up less screen space and doesn't obscure subtitles.

sorry, you've misunderstood... zoooom right in on the picture, you can see that the nice dimpled metal patterned effect has just a flat grey bar running through it, as if the graphics file is split in two, or is not big enough to fill the infobar area.

I had a look at the skin directory last night, but couldn't identify which png was being used here.

The problem is present in both the Full-Metal-Wizard and the default easy-skin-aus-hd, though you have to look pretty closely to see it in easy-skin-aus-hd.

The problem is not present in the OverlayHD skin. It uses a simple solid colour fill background.
