New problem with a T2

Post by Chrilynn2 » Tue Aug 23, 2022 10:10

Good morning.
I have 2 T2s and have kept these going with a number of issues, largely due to the generous assistance of forum members.
I have a new problem with one of my T2s.
Yesterday the recorder was working fine, I was checking a few things, after which I switched it off with the remote.
I went back later, to delete a couple of duplicate videos, but the T2 wouldn’t switch on. I checked the remote, which seemed Ok.
I tried switching it on on the box, nothing.
I tried with the remote for the other T2, nothing.
I accessed OpenWebif for the T2. It showed all the settings, Timers, and files, as normal, but the on off switch was ineffective.
I tried the same thing with the other T2 and this switched the box on and off, remotely, as expected.
I am at a loss as to what to try next, for this sudden issue, possibly a reboot?
Can anyone shed any light on this issue.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Chris

By "off" do you mean in standby (normally switches on almost immediately) or in shutdown (normally takes 40sec or so to start up)?

Standby mode. Just using the remote on off button. As you say it’s almost instantaneous that the screen appears.
I only ever use the rear shutdown switch when I reboot, or install new software updates.

Update to the issue.
I tried switching the T2 from standby a few more times this morning, to no avail.
I tried the remote, T2 front switch, and Openwebif switch. Nothing
On impulse, because you could see the files, and timers, on OpenWebif, I set up a sample recording on Ice, for the T2.
This didn’t show up on OpenWebif and, only showed the pending recording icon in Ice.
Anyway, I switched the TV on a bit later to see if anything had happened.
Before I could switch the T2 on a screen showed up asking for the Ice password.
I logged in and lo and behold the T2 was operating again, and the sample programme was recording.
All timers, and files seemed intact, and the menu info screen didn’t show anything untoward.
I allowed the sample recording to finish automatically, which it did. The recording was fine.
In the absence of any other theory, I can only assume the problem with the T2 not switching on, from Standby, was an
Unusual glitch and, that programming a sample show recording somehow woke the T2 from slumber.
I have checked the T2 a couple of times since and all seems well, fingers crossed.
The switching on, and off, was reflected in the OpenWebif display, along with the sample programme file.
It illustrates the fickleness of technology, which overall does a remarkable job.
Thank you to all who spent time considering the issue.
Any opinions, on what might have occurred, would be appreciated.
Cheers
Chris.

First thing I would have done is reboot, if locked up from the power switch at the back of the unit.

I run a T2 with IceTV and schedule a reboot daily at a time when I am unlikely to be scheduling any recordings. I picked up on the practice one or two firmware revisions ago as a precaution against the T2 locking up and becoming unresponsive to commands from the remote.

I have done the same with my main U4 to avoid lockups that happen with heavy remote usage.

That's not a good idea, unless you've shut down the PVR from software first.

It's not "going to shutdown", it's essentially pulling the power plug out, and should be a matter of last resort.

Thanks for the input all.
When you say you schedule a reboot daily, presumably you mean a software one from the menu power options.
Presumably, also, there’s no programming option to do this without manual intervention.
I didn’t realise it was as risky switching the back power button off, PRL. I only do this if I’ve lost control of the T2, or if it needs a USB update.
In this instance, I will shut it down, in the future, with power menu option first, before manual power off.
Thanks again.
Any other points of interest will be greatly appreciated, I learn a lot, each time I access the forum.
Cheers
Chris

I set Menu > Power > Power timers to Reboot at 3 AM.

Hi Paul,
I successfully set up one of my T2s with the timed software reboot( as you suggested). First one will be tomorrow, early morning.
Not sure how you check if it’s occurred.
I’m a bit nervous about doing it with the other T2 as it has a habit of occasionally demounting the third USB tuner, on reboot, which usually requires a few reboots to remount!!!
However, I guess the benefits probably outweigh the annoyance.
Thanks again

I put the T3 into standby rather than reboot because it sometimes loses the HDD, so I "know your pain!

Hi Paul,
I’ve had the missing HDD but it came back quickly with a reboot.
They do keep you on your toes.
Hopefully you haven’t had the T3 power supply issues.

The other T3 I recently sold had its PSU rebuilt by Warkus. The one I still have I rebuilt myself to Warkus' instructions. I'm thinking selling it too as we don't have room for it anymore more.
