Recordings list freezing up.
Recordings list freezing up.
Hi guys,
When I open my recordings list it takes forever to load, and when it does, it keeps freezing up. When it eventually plays a recording, it freezes up too. I've never experienced anything like it till today, it's running the latest firmware. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Mike
Edit: It's not only doing it in the recordings list now. It freezes up just trying to change channels watching live TV as well. I get the spinning symbol for ages and then the channel changes
Ok now I'm getting the spinner coming up watching live TV without trying to do anything. It comes and goes but the program isn't affected at all

Re: Recordings list freezing up.
The spinner is a sign that the user interface is waiting for some task to complete before it can move on.
This can often happen if the autotimer task is taking a very long time to update. Have you added any be autotimers recently?

Re: Recordings list freezing up.
Hi MrQuade,
No new autotimers added recently. I'm just in the middle of reinstalling the firmware to see if that fixes it, can I restore settings on a reinstall or do I have to set it all up from scratch again?
Re: Recordings list freezing up.
Ok I've done a full reinstall without restoring my settings, it's still freezing up.
Re: Recordings list freezing up.
That points towards it being hardware related then. Maybe the connection to the harddisk or the harddisk itself is not 100%
Are you able to connect to the Wiz and download a copy of /var/log/messages ?

Re: Recordings list freezing up.
Unfortunately I don't have a working computer at the moment.
Oh I have an old desktop that I could probably hook up, how do I go about getting the logs?
Re: Recordings list freezing up.
It's all good now. The first thing I did when this started was check for a firmware update, there wasn't one. After the reinstall of the firmware I got a prompt to do updates, I've now done the updates and that has fixed the problem. Very strange but I'm very happy it's fixed. Thanks for your help MrQuade
Omg I spoke too soon, it's started doing it again

Re: Recordings list freezing up.
If you feel up to it, I would suggest powering down the box, disconnecting all cables and taking a look inside. First, disconnect and reconnect the cables that connect the HDD to the motherboard. Both the HDD side and the motherboard side. Inspect the cable and connectors for any signs of damage.
Next, look for any yucky looking stuff or motherboard damage under the heat sinks that are in front of the tuners.

No problem, I'll get in there now and report what I find.peteru wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2019 21:13If you feel up to it, I would suggest powering down the box, disconnecting all cables and taking a look inside. Re: Recordings list freezing up.
It all looks exactly the same as it did when I put the HD in it 6 years ago. Cables and connectors are like new and no yucky stuff anywhere.
Re: Recordings list freezing up.
Next step could be installing the smartmontools package (if it isn't already) and running smartctl -a /dev/sda, then pasting the output here inside the

tags.
Re: Recordings list freezing up.
Thanks Peter, I assume I'd need a computer connected to the network to do that so that's not possible at the moment.
I replaced the HDD last night and it seems to have fixed it. I recorded 70GB of random crap to test it, it's still a lot less than what was on the old drive but I'm getting no freezing up issues yet.
It sucks that I lost all the recordings I had but I'm stoked I have my favourite toy back
Cheers

Re: Recordings list freezing up.
It's possible to run commands on the T/U/V Beyonwizes without them being networked, but it's a bit roundabout. And anyway, it sounds like it may be too late to bother.

Re: Recordings list freezing up.
Hey prl,
Yeah pasting it from the Wiz into here was the part I thought I'd need the connection for. Anyway, I'll learn how to do that if and when I have another problem.
Cheers

It may not all be lost. You can always try putting the drive in an external USB enclosure and see what you can salvage.
Re: Recordings list freezing up.
Nah I formatted the drive as a last resort when I was trying to fix it, I didn't even remember I had another one till I was out of optionspeteru wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 16:33mike007 wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 15:13I replaced the HDD last night and it seems to have fixed it. Re: Recordings list freezing up.
The generic way to do it is to create a shell script file, copy it onto a USB stick, plug the USB stick into the Beyonwiz, and run the command there using the FileCommander (MENU>Files / Sources).
The script must have extension .sh (FileCommander requirement) & it should redirect command output into a file on the USB stick.
Here's a basic framework for a script that does this. This one is useful in itself: it reports on the Ethernet device status without needing the network to be running
Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
# Try to put the output in a file named after the script, in
# the same directory as the script (assuming being run from
# FileCommander)
outfile=script.out
dirname=`dirname $0`
basename=`basename $0 .sh`
[ -n "$basename" ] && outfile=$basename.out
outfile=$dirname/$outfile
# Run stuff with the stderr and stdout going into the file
# and also to stdout
{
# Put whatever commands you want to run in here
echo ==== ethtool ===
ethtool eth0
echo ==== ifconfig ===
ifconfig eth0
} 2>&1 | tee $outfile
The { ... } groups commands together so that their outputs can be conveniently redirected to the same place, the 2>&1 | redirects stderr to stdout and then redirects stdout to a pipes into tee which copies its stdin to a file and to its stdout.
Using tee means you can also see the output of the commands in the FileCommander's Console output screen.

Re: Recordings list freezing up.
The idea is so that you don't have to. It's boilerplate. Copy/paste that, and change the commands inside the braces to the ones you want to run.
