Queries: Instant Recording & Channel Infobar

Post by singlefished » Mon Jan 08, 2018 21:24

Hi Guys,

Sorry, couple of questions..... observations really!

I've noticed that when I start an instant recording from live TV then go to the EPG the event that's being recorded doesn't get highlighted in a similar fashion as if I had started recording from the EPG by adding a timer....
Is it meant to be like this? I don't instant record that much on the T2 but the only indication of recording is the icon at the end of the event ~ much easier to see if the whole program is lit up similar to a timer event.

Next, a query on the Channel Infobar which pops up down the bottom when changing channels.....
When recording there's red text channel and progress bar show up that show "one" of the current events you're recording ~ given that many more channels/events can be simultaneously recorded, might it not be simpler to just have the red text advise on how many events are currently recording?
Here's why I ask this question.... I set up 3 simultaneous recordings on 3 different networks and then surfed all the channels I was able to zap through:

*TEN
*ONE (Recording)
*ELEVEN
*ABC (Recording)
*ABC KIDS
*ABC ME
*ABC NEWS
*SBS (Recording)
*VICELAND
*FOOD NETWORK

All the channel infobars for the channels "not" recording (ten, eleven, kids, me, etc) displayed that only channel ONE was recording ~ this only changed when I was viewing ABC and SBS which displayed their own recording info respectively.... I couldn't see the logic other than it displayed ONE as the primary recording event to display because it was higher up on the bouquet I was viewing.
For me personally, I'd like to see how many events are recording given the capabilities of the T series devices, everything else can be garnered from the EPG if required.....

None of these things are issues, problems or criticisms, the work that's gone into the T series is impressive and I like it a lot ~ just thought I would throw my thoughts out there based on the way my brain thinks and how I look at things :)

IIRC the "recording" progress bar in the infobar shows the recording progress on the last channel visited that was recording, but I might not be remembering that correctly. In any case, it can show at most one. I'm sure this was discussed a long time ago. I'll have a dig around either on the forum or in the code tomorrow.

Hi Prl,

It would be great if we could have a recording count in the InfoBar (as suggested).

I would love to have a recording information and control screen like the Classic Beyonwiz models. I doubt this would be possible on the T and U series but I can live in hope.

Regards,
Ian.

Yes, sorry, I'm definitely "late to the party" with regards to thoughts and opinions.....development history, discussion, hardware and software constraints all contribute and some things are what they are simply because they can't be anything else!

I'm posting on the premise that a fresh pair of eyes sees things differently :)

I was trying to search through the mass of previous discussion looking to see if/when these things had been flagged before.... i dont see any point in opening discussion on stuff that has been done to death already... Apologies to all as I could see plenty of discussion but hard to focus in on finding the particular needle in the abundant haystack I was searching.

Why wouldn't it be possible? Whether anyone has the inclination to do it is another question.

About the only thing that the Classic Beyonwiz Recording Info popup has that the Timer List screen doesn't have is recording progress indications.

I was thinking about how all the recordings are shown in a nice list. Also the way you can pause, resume, stop and change the length of recordings. As you say, they could probably be done but it would be a lot of work.

You can change the length of a recording like any other timer: go to the timer screen, press OK and change the end time. If the USB tuner goes bad, I wait for an ad, stop the timer, toggle channels, then disable and enable the timer to restart recording. I also created a MovieJoin plugin, so the parts can be combined back into one movie (if I feel like it).

Did you own a Classic model Beyonwiz PVR? If not then the nuances of my proposal will not be obvious. ALL the actions I described could all be performed on any recording all via a single status screen.

Ian, I agree, that screen is one of the regularly used screens I miss from the DP-S1.

I would be delighted to be able to join compatible recordings directly on the T4! I have often thought it must be possible given how timeshift recordings work. Currently, I do this on the PC by converting it to mp4 but it is not an efficient process.

Any chance of getting hold of a copy suitable for OverlayHD Adoxa?

Hi Paul,

As you said, the timeshift merge process does this, so you can do this directly on the box yourself if so inclined. See the link below where the 'cat' and 'createapscfiles' commands are highlighted.
http://beyonwiz.com.au/forum/viewtopic. ... at#p134644

In that example, there were two files for the "Diagnosis Murder" recording, the recording timed @ 16:41 and the timeshift padding recording timed @ 16:59.
The timeshift padding recording is appended ('>>') to the end of the recording file. Then the access point .ap & structure .sc files are created for that combined recording by running the createapscfiles executable (the Reconstructapsc plugin does the same thing).

It would still be much easier to do it with a UI component though.

Thanks Geoff,

So it's as simple as a "cat" command in reverse time order of the segments, followed by "createapscfiles" on the initial file. I use a phone much of the time to control gear but the screen is way to small for telnet. As you say, a UI would be so much nicer.

One day I must invest in a laptop or a tablet for the lounge, which is where the T4 lives. We are yet to embrace any of the streaming options so it remains on the technology wish list.

Cheers, Paul

Not in reverse time order for more than two files, I think that would be "cat file-2 file-3 file-4 >> file-1" to create a single file "file-1" with contents from each of the files in the order of file-1, file-2, file-3, file-4.
(then either run Reconstructapsc plugin against file-1, or execute "createapscfiles file-1").

Not necessarily in reverse time order for two files, either, really. Redirections don't have to be at the end of the command, and they're not actually arguments to the command in Unixoid systems. So cat >> file-1 file-2 works just fine. They don't even have to be after the command name, so >> file-1 cat file-2 also works :)

It's independent of skin (just a choice box and task). I initially used the cat method, but that's even more inconvenient without network access, so I finally created a plugin. ATM it only works with numbered files - FILE.ts, FILE_001.ts, FILE_002.ts, ..., but I'll be looking into making multiple selection work with the movie list, then I'll make the joiner work with that.

That would be great to have. It would help implement two long-standing enhancement requests:
Issue #324: Add multi-file delete, move and copy to Movie Player
Issue #348: Allow the user to select multiple recordings to play in sequence

#348 shares with the "join" operation the need to be able to specify the order of the items, and preferably have feedback on whet the order is. Order is less important for delete/move/copy.

It looks like I might be able to squeeze four recordings into Full Metal Wizard; more than that will show the number above the REC image. What's the preference for which recordings should be shown?

  • earliest started
  • latest started
  • first to finish
  • last to finish
  • whatever
In any event, if the current channel is being recorded that will be first.

I think you'd be pushing it. Remember that service names can be quite long. I don't think that the infobar needs any more clutter than it already has.

Also, remember that changes to Full-Metal-Wizard should also be reflected in easy-skin-aus-hd.

Hi Adoxa,

I think this information should be in a task specific screen so that all the recordings can be treated equally.

Any changes to the UI should be equally usable in ALL skins. ;)

Ian.

I use FMW, so that's where I was going to start. If it was liked, I'll adapt easy; if it wasn't, I'll junk it. I'll leave OverlayHD up to you.

I've almost got four recordings showing on FMW, but am having skin troubles. If there's only one recording I want the label to be 300 wide, but if there's more than one, the first should be 205 wide.

Code: Select all

<!-- Service name for only recording -->
		<widget source="session.RecordState" position="658,29" render="Label" size="300,20" valign="center" halign="right" backgroundColor="black" foregroundColor="unff4040" font="Regular;14" transparent="1">
			<convert type="ValueRange">1,1</convert>
			<convert type="ConditionalShowHide" />
			<convert type="infoRecBm">NumberName</convert>
		</widget>

		<!-- Service name for recording 1 -->
		<widget source="session.RecordState" position="753,29" render="Label" size="205,20" valign="center" halign="right" backgroundColor="black" foregroundColor="unff4040" font="Regular;14" transparent="1">
			<convert type="ValueRange">2,99</convert>
			<convert type="infoRecBm">NumberName,Short</convert>
			<convert type="ConditionalShowHide" />
		</widget>
(NumberName is a new converter to use channel number and program name; Short uses m instead of mins.)

The idea is if there's only one recording (the value of RecordState) show the first and hide the second; when there's more than one, hide the first and show the second. I've modified these converters to pass through the boolean, value and text properties. The different order is part of the experiment: the first always shows and never hides (ConditionalShowHide is trying to hide infoRecBm); the second never shows (never used after initial creation). What am I missing?

Four recordings won't fit on easy-skin-aus-hd, as it's top section fades away; two should work, though.

Hi adoxa,

I wish I could help with the skin coding issues ~ i'm pretty clueless with that sort of complicated back end stuff!

I personally wouldn't worry about any more than 2 though.... even if you could get 4 recordings fitting in then there could still potentially be 4 recordings (or more) missing that could never be displayed.

What about....
If there is one recording then display it
If there are two recordings then show them both
If there are more than two then don't show any... instead show a message something like "X" Events currently recording on "Y" Tuner(s)

This would be compatible with all skins I assume if easy-skin was used to set the recording # upper limit. It would also work with the maximum amount of recordings any particular device could handle.

For more detailed information on more than 2 recordings then the new window method identified earlier in the thread would maybe be the way to go?

Thanks for taking the time to look at this sort of stuff - I just wish I had more skills and could lend a hand!!!

I was thinking of keeping the first two (or four) and having a number above the REC icon when there's more.

Or just press TIMER. I'll also be looking into making STOP bring up a list, so you can choose one to stop, or all, or reduce/extend the length.

Good news you can make the amount of recordings show up, that will be handy :) Have you done enough to see how it looks with the multiple recordings showing up.... I'd be keen for a sneaky-peek if it was far enough along?

Yep, just gave up on hiding it, using a blank label instead (as it originally did). So here's some shots of how my info looks now.

Single recording
rec1.png
I've moved it across a bit, so it lines up with the program progress, closer to the update icon. Both the label and progress are 300 wide, so a long show will overhang the progress due to the REC icon. I don't really want to make the progress longer or the label shorter. Notice that the remaining time is negative, as it now honours the "elapsed is positive" setting.

Two recordings
rec2.png
Originally I thought of having them side-by-side, but then I thought if I'm going to stack them, may as well make use of the space and have two longer recordings. The bottom one is still first, as that's the current program.

Three recordings
rec3.png
Reduce the second one (still on the right) to fit in a third. Notice the program name is truncated to fit the width.

Four recordings
rec4.png
Now we reduce the first one to fit in the fourth.

Five recordings
rec5.png
We're really out of room now, so just show a count above the REC icon. Notice the order is the current channel, then finish time.

Looks pretty good mate, some fiddly work to fit it all in! I was worried it might be too crammed and squeezed looking but it doesn't look too bad and is much better than I envisaged :)

Would the channel number and event name be user configurable or "it is what it is?" Everybody would have a different opinion I bet but if there was an option to only show channel name and the remaining recording time then that's probably what I'd choose.... truncated text always jingles my OCD jangly bits :)

I like the "elapsed is positive" change... My brain works on the principle that current position is ahead of the start (positive) and behind the end (negative) and was one of the default settings I was pleased I could change :)

Number of recordings is also good.... I initially thought the "REC" text below it would show against each recording but good to see it only shows up once, Is it an image?

I guess it could (and probably should) be UI configurable, but not something I was planning on doing. There's always the option of editing the skin directly. Channel name is still truncated (the existing version does it after 20 characters, reduced to 17 plus ellipsis; I do it according to the label width).

Well, I ended up making the recording info configurable, after all - Settings->TV->Recording settings->Infobar recording display. There's a choice between channel name (default); program name; or channel number and program name. The remaining time is always present. I've also allowed the skin to specify multiple sizes, so the main channel name can take advantage of the space when there are no recordings, then shrink when there are. I've added the count (when there's more than one) to the right of the REC image in easy-skin-aus-hd, but still left it as the one recording.

If anyone would like to try it out, download the attachment, extract it somewhere the Wiz can see it, browse to infobar-recording and run setup.sh, then restart (repeat to remove).

If this is to be implemented, it would be good to slightly increase the height of the easy-hd skin to accommodate the extra info and have uniformity across the skins..

Hi,

My opinion is that the info bar is too busy with all this extra recording information added. I think the detailed recording information should be moved to a separate screen.

Regards,
Ian.

Yes, perhaps, but there isn't a lot of room there for a progress bar, either.

Well, I'm doing something wrong after installing and restart GUI....

Menu
Setup
TV
Recording settings

... not showing up for me, what have I broken????

I've tried it a few times, not even sure if it's installed or uninstalled now but I'm obviously doing something wrong.... Will try a reboot, haven't done that yet.

Hi,

I think we should aspire to a timer information and control screen like that on the Classic Beyonwiz models.

Ian.

Sorry to distract from the conversation, but I was wondering how the old DP series timer list differs from the T series timer list that everyone seems to like? People keep talking about the old functionality being better, but I cant see much that is different.
My position is one from genuine ignorance as I tend to just set timers and not worry about them after that.

Ah sorry, I stuffed up the script (testing on the PC is not the same as testing on the box!). Open up the script and remove the apostrophes from the src=... line.

+1. I prefer the T4 approach too. Fewer keypresses.

The old way was press pop-up, then select item.

Current is press Timer to see timers; press Media to see recordings; press Ok to see tuner status; press Subtitles to see/change status; press Audio to see/change the Audio.

By all means add an optional pop-up if you prefer but I don't think that it's more functional: just a different implementation to that with which long-term users are familiar.

On the DP series, POPUP>Recording Info (or similar) gives a popup showing progess info for all running timers. It also allows control of the timers. But also remember that it never has more than two recordings in it.

IMO, enhancing the TIMERS screen on the T series is probably the cleanest way to do something similar on the T series/U4, since it already allows some control of running timers.

In November I had some hands-on refamiliarisation with the DP GUI and I can't see much reason for nostalgia for it. However, some of the features of the DP recording info popup might be useful in the T series TIMERS screen. Getting the Stop recording function of the TIMERS screen to work more sensibly, particularly across GUI restarts, would be a good starting point. A progress indicator for each of the active recordings might be nice, too, but the timer slots would need to be made taller. They're already crowded.

Ok, so in display terms, then the progress indicator is really the only improvement there.

The stop behavior is more of an under-the-hood improvement.
The stop behaviour needs to be more of a "stop and suspend indefinitely" command.

As IanSav mentioned (a fair bit up-thread), the DP series also has a "pause/resume" recording function. That would allow you to, for example, to a rough cut-out of ads in a program you were watching as it recorded. I can't think of much other use for it, but perhaps there is. I don't see it myself as a particularly valuable function.

I've only just remembered that, like the DP series, the T series already has a screen that only shows a list of current recordings and allows you to manipulate them. It's accessible via REC (or RED)>Stop or change active timer. It brings up the timer list with the same controls as the full timer list, but only displays active recordings.

So I think this is more about how easy it is to activate that screen, what should be shown in it and what controls it has rather than a lack of a screen that's similar in function to the DP series Recording Info screen. The screen's already there, folks :)

No progress bars show up on the InfoBar and no numbers showing in the vicinity of the REC icon... I put 5 recordings on to test
