T4 crashes when searching EPG
T4 crashes when searching EPG
Hi,
My brother, my sister and I each had a Tivo's for 8 years and we never had any problems, as of recently I replaced mine with a T4 and have many questions/frustrations about this device.
BUT for now my first query is the T4 crashing 5 times this month when searching back and forth through the EPG each time.
At least its polite each time it crashes 'we are really sorry, Your receiver encountered a problem....'
Attached is the logs files as well as a screen grab of the TV.
I have set the T4 to restart every day at 5am as i figured this may assist but to no avail.
I suppose the right thing to do is post my other questions on a separate general post rather than here but lets see how i go with anyone finding the cause of the crashing here.
Your assistance on this matter is appreciated,
Sam
NB: i understand its the day before the big guy arrives down everyones chimney so a response may not occur for some time.

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
You installed the Series2Folder plugin. It's crashing. It's doing this because you have no /media/hdd/movie/, which would suggest you have renamed or deleted this system directory.
You also seem to have other issues, when seeking. I suggest you upgrade to 17.5 series firmware. This will require you to set up the T4 from scratch.
If that does not help, it may be time to run some HDD diagnostics.

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
Hmm, that's definitely not normal for it to crash at all. What exactly do you mean "searching back and forth in the EPG"? Do you mean you just opened the EPG and were navigating around, or were you using the search function to find events?
First of all, I highly recommend that you update to the latest firmware, the version you are using is no longer supported in terms of bugfixes.
Check this thread for the download links.
Note that the new 17.5 series firmware does require you to enter your settings and timers from scratch again (manual setup). An unfortunate inconvenience that was required for all the new features/fixes.

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
I'll fix the bug in Series2Folder after Christmas, and maybe even add configurable source folders for it.

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
Hi, firstly WOW, thank you for responding.
Secondly, with regard to the comment the crash is because of the series2folder plugin doesnt have a MOVIE folder i do have one- refer attached screen shot of the folder structure - i only uploaded the most recent logs as that what i thought was most relevant, however i have now uploaded the logs files from the first month when i got the device and before any plugins/changes, so why the crash initially?
Thirdly, i check for updates from within the device and it states there is NO updates!? If there is a new version why isn't the device picking that up? i will use the link provided in a response to do the upgrade.
And to answer the question, to make it crash i just opened the EPG and navigate around, nothing else, i must admit i page up and down quickly and also arrow up and down quickly as that's what im used to with the Tivo, the T4 doesn't seem to handle that very well and crashes, ive recently slowed down my searching but of late its still crashing and quite possibly from the MOVIE folder being deleted, but that was recent and as i said it was crashing in its first month.
Lastly and most importantly for now thanks again and merry Christmas,
Sam

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
"Santa will only come if you are asleep!" It still took a lot longer than usual, but mine are finally asleep now.
As far as the online update, the Beyonwiz firmware releases have a major version, which you install from USB and the online updates are only applicable to that major version. You can not use the online method to go between major versions and in some instances you need to use the USB method for big updates of a major version (although this is rare - I try to avoid this outside of the beta cycle)
There have been a few major versions over the years, including 4.3, 4.4, 16.1 and the most recent, 17.5.

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
Based on your comments and the evidence in the logs, it sounds like your HDD "disappeared" for some reason on at least one occasion. A faulty HDD or HDD cable/connector could be the source of your problems. Was the HDD pre-installed?
I'd still suggest the 17.5 firmware as a first step, but if the root cause is hardware related, it is unlikely to fix the problems. At best it may produce different symptoms.
Also, how good is your reception?

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
Also, I notice that the movie folder is "movie" and not "Movie" as it is set by default.
I don't know how fussy the Wiz's case sensitivity is in that regard, but it does run Linux with a ext4 filesystem, and that is most definitely case sensitive at its core. It may be a good idea to properly capitalise the directory name.
The crashes you see with the EPG scrolling isn't typical in my experience, so hopefully the fresh start will sort things out for you (barring hardware issues as PeterU pointed out).

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
I believe the lower-casing as "movie" is correct, as this appears to be a display from the media selection list of /media/hdd/ (not Samba, where I would expect to see "Movie")

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
I don't think any T4s have been available for a while, so if you got it recently, was it second-hand? This might add extra weight to peteru's thoughts about this being a hardware issue.

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
Hi,
I upgraded to 17.5, using the link provided to upgrade (viewtopic.php?f=56&t=12075)
also mentions to switch your software feed to a live beta, i have NOT done this as not sure if this is applicable/requirement?!
I did a online check for any updates and there isnt any, so i have the current version as i have shown attached.
So for now we'll see how we go with the version 17.5 and if the crashes continue.
--
and i renamed the movie folder to Movie but it appears after the new firmware lowercase is the default as someone also mentioned, - also screen shot supplied.
--
to answer the question: "Also, how good is your reception?"
i think its Excellent if not pretty good, had a professional installation of a digital antennae recently and my signal strength is at if not close to 100%- screen image also provided.
--
With regard to the question of HDD loose cables...etc I also checked for loose HDD cables while i had the lid off.
I assume i can do the built-in HDD check and this will check for HDD errors, i also assume it will take a few hours (1tb) and should do this overnight or does this HDD check not really work?
--
Also is it best to reboot the Beyonwiz every day via a scheduled reboot? e.g. 5am
It it best to put it to standby when not in use (e.g. overnight?)
--
i have other queries like EPG refresh queries and the like and it would be best to create a separate post for that at some stage.
Thanks
Sam

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
I never have had my T4 do a scheduled reboot, but at one point I changed the power-off operation to be Deep Standby (effectively a shutdown, to save power as the T4 consumes around 25-30W in Standby), so it will boot up each time I use it. Perhaps that may be a viable alternative if you don't mind the boot delay.

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
HDD check (really filesystem check) probably shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes.

It is necessary to do the beta feed switch as you are using a beta version and won't get any applicable updates otherwise.cockroach wrote: ↑Wed Dec 27, 2017 12:34Hi,

You didn't say, but hopefully you didn't restore settings.
Just to be explicit it is always important to quote signal quality - usually more important than strength, though you need both. I can see from the image both are at a great level so not an issue for that service.to answer the question: "Also, how good is your reception?"

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
Only 1 of the 5 crash logs in the crash logs posted in the first post, the first, Enigma2_crash_2017-12-06_22-49-20.log (from 6 Dec), appears to have anything to do with the Series2Folder plugin.
The crashes logged in:
Enigma2_crash_2017-12-08_19-42-30.log
Enigma2_crash_2017-12-12_21-57-31.log
Enigma2_crash_2017-12-17_20-46-46.log
are due to the fatal error:
[eFixedMessagePump] Got event but queue is empty. The crash in the screen shot is from the same error (and is the crash logged in Enigma2_crash_2017-12-12_21-57-31.log). They are probably the errors that peteru referred to as occurring while seeking.
The crash logged in Enigma2_crash_2017-12-16_16-19-07.log is a SIGSEVG signal (segmentation violation, or reference through an illegal address) that happened while scrolling down through the graphical EPG. I think that that may be the crash that's referred to as "searching EPG".
Of the 4 crashes in the later post of crash logs from November, Enigma2_crash_2017-10-14_22-31-48.log and Enigma2_crash_2017-10-20_19-47-07.log are due to the [eFixedMessagePump] Got event but queue is empty error, and the other two, Enigma2_crash_2017-10-15_08-58-57.log and Enigma2_crash_2017-10-27_23-34-55.log are due to an error when trying ro set a recording in the EPG by pressing the REC button.
So in all, four different causes, and only one that seems to be due to Series2Folder.

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
Unfortunately the logs don't have enough info to figure out what's going wrong at this stage. I committed some code changes that will indicate which message pump was involved. I also turned the fatal errors into warnings. That ought to provide more clues as to what is going wrong if/when this error condition appears again.
I'll see if I can push a beta update out before the end of the year.
Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
Hi,
in response to the questions:
Q: "Is your signal quality similar across the board?"
A: My signal quality is pretty good across most channels and >90%, (ABC the only one being in the 80%ish).
--
Q: "hopefully you didn't restore settings"
A: No, configured from scratch, set up my auto timers from scratch, installed 'series to folder' and 'EPG refresh' plugins (just the 2 plugins).
--
RE: Beta feed: I executed the script twice to 'switch your software feed to a live beta' and did a check for updates and nothing to upgrade, so for now it seems i have the latest anyway.
--
As for the update on the logs comment "The Enigma2_crash_2017-10-27_23-34-55.log are due to an error when trying to set a recording in the EPG by pressing the REC button" i do recall that my wife was trying to record something through the EPG and she said it crashed and also while searching through the EPG it crashes for us both which started this post, but since then i have upgraded firmware to 17.5, switched to beta feed and installed the 2 plugins as before, so am am back to where i was but with FW 17.5
Enjoy the rest of your day,
Sam

Re: T4 crashes when searching EPG
I have fixed the bug that causes a crash in the Series2Folder plugin if the default movie directory doesn't exist.
I've installed the new version on our in-use T4 and I'll give it a few days testing before I post a package in the Series2Folder topic.
