T2 Loading Progress

Post by adoxa » Wed Jul 11, 2018 00:08

The T2 has no front panel, so unlike the other models there's no visible loading progress. I've remedied that with an on-screen display (this is the left island from OverlayHD's "Beach" background).

The first number is seconds since it was initialised (after the spinners are loaded). If anyone would like to try it out, I'll make a binary available.

Hi,

Wouldn't a picture of grass growing be more appropriate? :D

Maybe the island is giving us something to dream about while waiting!

I think the U4 could use the same treatment. It just says ' loading' til LiveTV appears.

Start off with just a sandy atoll, it gets more vegetation until the trees appear when all is loaded

You may be joking, but I could actually copy some sky to remove the island and then build it up...

It doesn't really need it. See "Loading" progress on U4. It just needs that fixed.

Now your talking, that would be neat !!!
Booting stuff is so boring these days, software developers need to "think outside the box" and make things a bit more interesting for the consumer

Hi Exitguy,

Keep in mind that the more work to do during boot up the longer the boot up sequence will take.

Regards,
Ian.

I toyed with the idea but didn't implement it, but with that comment I might have to. However, since the initial image has the island, I was going to deforest it, instead.

I have two spinners, a startup "init" spinner which then switches to the "wait" spinner. My startup screen is Felix the cat pacing up and down on the beach.

And that means you wouldn't really need the progress text (maybe not even for debugging, as you could just look at /etc/enigma2/profile) and it would work on every box. Hm...

How about Con the Fruiterer: "Waiting, waiting, waiting"?

Here's a patch to display a simple progress bar during boot. It's not configurable atm, but I'm open to ideas. NB: this is for the T-series only, there's a separate version for the U4. I should point out that during testing it sometimes froze, needing a forced reboot. I changed how it works and it seems okay now, so I hope it's all good.
