Most stable firmware currently for T2

Post by fangios » Wed Sep 16, 2020 11:22

Hi all,
Long time no post!

Havent touched the T2 for some time, or read much on the forums, but was having a look around today and realised my T2 is running very old firmware (4.4.20160818)

One of the reasons I haven't looked at it before this is that I was under the impression that it would tell me automatically that there was an update available, but from reading it seems that only works for minor updates.

So - to update my machine am i best to go to the official release 17.x version, or the newer beta version 19.x?

Thanks for your help!

You'll be fine with the latest beta version.

You will need to redo all your settings from scratch but that would be the case changing to any of these newer versions.

And as Peter says in his post, make sure you switch to the beta feed of updates as soon as you have finished the USB update and don't accept any online updates till you have done that.

Enjoy. :D
Cheers

So yesterday afternoon I did the upgrade to 19.3, all went well, no problems

Last night my wife was scrolling through the EPG when the T2 locked up. (The first time we ever remember it locking up!)

She pressed the scroll up button and it just froze with the EPG in the background and the spinning wheel.

After a few minutes of waiting we gave up and powered off and back on, and it behaved perfectly for the rest of the night.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks

Spinning wheel means that the GUI is waiting for something to update in the background before it can proceed. Hard to know what that something might have been, though prl knows the EPG code pretty well and might have an idea of what background process may halt those updates.

You can enable logging on the T2, and that way if it happens again, you may be able to retrieve the log file before rebooting so we can see what the T2 was up to behind the scenes.

A *lot* has changed between the 4.4 series and the 19.3 series, so maybe some unique way you had configured or use your T2 has tripped something we haven't seen yet.

Although a lot may have changed between versions, at first glance it all looks pretty similar!

I'll turn the logging on and see if it happens again, hopefully not!

A lot of effort goes into trying to make the changes as bumpless as possible.

Here is a list of what happened between 4.4 and 16.1, then 17.5. There is no extra update for 19.3, but quite a few quality of life improvements were included in that one too.

Having recently updated to 19.3 20191106, on my T2s, I am interested in updating to the current Beta version, as recommended by Gully.
There is so much information in the firmware threads it is difficult to pin down where the current Beta firmware download for the T2 is, or even what the version number is.
At the risk of repeating previously stated information, could the location, and version number, be stated again, for the T2?
Thanks.

You will always find it here, and usually the first topic, which currently is this one.

You'll also need to follow the instructions to switch to the beta feed straight after installing.

Having said all that, a new public release is on the horizon but only PeterU can say when it will arrive.

Thanks Gully, that was the latest I could find, I shall now prepare to install it.
Are the instructions, you refer to, part of the install, or do I have to look elsewhere for these, before I install the update?
Cheers

You're welcome.

The instructions are in the post you'll get to if you click on the link in the first post which will also give you the script to copy onto your USB stick.

Success,
Installed the Beta firmware on both T2s, and it appears to have gone well.
I also installed the update script, as per the instructions, and this was also successful.
I ran the online software updates and these downloaded successfully.
Thanks again for all the help given.
Cheers
