VITC Code

Post by Trial_Master » Wed Jan 22, 2020 21:07

I’ve updated both my T2 & T4 to 19.3 (20191106) and now see VITC Code on 10 Peach on both devices, all other channels are fine. I initially thought it was the broadcast but when I changed to TV tuner 10 Peach looks fine.

I didn’t have this issue on 17.5 prior to upgrading. Any ideas?

EDIT: I tried reverting T4 back to 17.5 but the issue persists? A factory reset on 17.5 (no restore) still does not resolve. I am upgrading to 19.3 again and will restore settings saved before I downgraded.

EDIT2: I looked back over neighbours recording since upgrade last Thursday and they were fine. Only today recording is showing what looks like VITC Code. We haven’t touched any settings on T4 and haven’t used the T2 since updating so strange they both have this issue. So something has changed, at least it’s not tied to firmware.

If you are seeing vitc code then it is part of the video image that is being sent. It means that peach is dropping the ball.

That’s 100% what I thought and it makes sense but when I view Peach on Samsung tuner directly there is no VITC?

Hopefully it goes away by itself as it sounds like nothing I can do from this end?

That's because the TV's internal tuner is overscanned when it is displayed. The internal tuners overscan setting is generally undefeatable unlike that of the HDMI inputs.

The wrong way to "fix" it would be to set your TV's HDMI input to 16:9 aspect ratio. This will chop off the edges of all incoming signals and thus hide the vitc. This will soften the overall signal and will affect all channels of course and I do not recommend doing this.

I'd submit a complaint to Peach of it bothers you.

Good to know about the tv tuner. I have tweeted 10 Peach to advise them. Thanks for confirming the issue is in broadcast. I knew I didn’t mess with anything today that would remotely cause this.

Hopefully it’s sorted in next day or so.

Have a good night :)

Emailed 10 this morning, still not resolved this afternoon, but I’ve just flicked on T4 and they have fixed it. Thanks again MrQuade.

You can often see the vitc garbage on old programs that have been converted from analog broadcasts and then when the ads come on, the vitc disappears from view since the ad was likely produced more recently, so didn't have any of that analog conversion legacy.

Sometimes there's not much to be done about it if the broadcaster isn't interested in fixing old material.

It was on ads too. All sorted now, old programs and all. They never replied to me but at least it’s resolved.

That's strange then.

The cleaner must have bumped the circuit breaker on ol'betsy sitting in the corner and turned on some legacy equipment! ;)

Hi,

The VITC signals are still used for transmitter mode remote control. They are meant to be removed from the actual broadcast signal but sometimes things go wrong.

Regards,
Ian.

Ah, well it certainly went wrong in Brisbane yesterday and today. Never seen it before so it may well have been what you describe. Glad it’s fixed, that VITC is distracting across the top of the screen.

I know this is fixed now, but would the following setting have worked for this?

From live tv:

MENU > Channels
Highlight offending channel from within one of the bouquets, then
MENU > (5) Hide dotted line on the top for this service

The issue in Brisbane was being broadcast in error so the broadcaster had to rectify. I’ll leave your question to the experts but VITC should not be visible to the viewer.

In theory it should have, but I'm not sure if the feature works as well as it should.

The last time I recommended someone try it, it did something unexpected.

I'm spending a few days of medically enforced absence so I can't check. I tried it to fix a problem on a channel 2 service a while back. Basically, it didn't work. Don't recall a specific problem with it though.

I've modified my skin so it hides the green vertical line that occasionally appears on SBS. FAV might be easier than MENU > Channels.

SBS seems determined to deny that even exists.

It most certainly does! But I mainly see it replaying recordings on the PC.

It's, other wise we worldly be discussing it ;)

I don't see it on the main channel as often, but regularly on sbs2.

As someone with an OLED TV, it makes my skin crawl.

This is yet another case where the vast majority of the viewers have overscan settings enabled on their tv, so they never see our, and the complaints are only coming from a handful of obscure PVR weirdos.
