Cannot Upgrade T3

Post by DaveW » Sat Dec 15, 2018 13:51

Hi,

I've just come back from overseas and have unpacked my T3. I'm trying to upgrade to thew latest firmware but it's not working

I've downloaded beyonwiz-17.5-beyonwizt3-20180417_usb.zip and extracted to a FAT32 formatted usb stick. I've powered on the T3 with the stick in the back, it says "Press OK to upgrade", then "Upgrading.." but nothing more happens.

Not sure what version I'm running, the about page says

Drivers: 2014-08-14
Kernel: 3.6
Oe-Core: 4.2
Bootloader: Thu Jul 3 15:55:14 KST 2014
Front Panel: 20038

Last Upgrade: 2014-10-04 16:51

Any ideas what to do, I'm wondering if I need to apply older upgrades first? And on the downloads page there's a "beyonwizt3-bootloader-20150312", should I apply this? Is it the same process as the firmware?

Regards
Dave

Hi Dave

No need to do any intermediate firmwares you can go straight to the latest. As the warnings say you will need to redo all your settings and not restore them.

Are you pressing the OK button on the T3 rather than on the remote? I know you said it says upgrading.

Did you try the front USB?

You could also rename one of the files on the USB - called noforce and rename it force. That will make the upgrade start with out pressing OK.

Also there are later beta versions that you might want to use instead. The latest is very stable and has a lot of improvements over the 20180417 version.
Cheers

Hi Gully

Yes after a few attempts I realised I had to push OK on the device - otherwise it eventually started the standard boot process.

I did read a couple of posts re USB 1.1, but I'm assuming if it's saying Upgrading... the bootloader can read the device?

Regards
David

Sounds like it is reading it.

Your bootloader is too old --

Thanks @Grumpy_Geoff, I've successfully updated the bootloader. I'll give the firmware a go tomorrow.

Your current front panel version (V20038) is old as well.
There is a clock drift issue on front panel firmwares V20052 and older. This drift can cause the T3/4 to boot too early for a timer and thus not go to standby to await the timer, and also not return to deep standby at timer end.
The amount of clock drift will depend on the amount of time the box has been in deep standby.

The latest front panel firmware is V20057, see "Front panel update - V20057"

However, there are reports on the forum of some T3s using the V20057 version that fail to mount their HDD when booting from deep standby. The belief is the healthier the state of the T3 power supply the greater likelihood of this issue.
To avoid this issue, I think those T3s are thus kept in standby instead.

Yep, mine exhibits this behaviour.

Thanks

I'm fully upgraded now. Is there a setting somewhere which controls if it goes into standby rather than deep standby? I'm wondering if that may fix a longstanding issue I have where I have to power cycle the T3 when it's been in standby for a while because there's no video output. My topfield also did this - I suspect it's the TV, it's a rather old Fujitsu Plasmavision which DVI so something doesn't seem to handshake properly.

Also I'll keep an eye on it, but the device seems a lot less responsive now that I'm running the latest firmware - almost like there's high CPU usage. Volume control wasn't smooth and when I pressed power off, nothing happened so I did it again then it went on and off.

MENU->Setup->System->Button settings->Action on short POWER/Action on long POWER

By default short POWER is "Standby" and long POWER brings up the power menu.

The sluggishness may be due to the indexing by the miniDLNA server if you have a large recordings collection on the local or external disks. If you don't need the DLNA server running on the T3 then disable it.

I didn't do the 16.1 upgrade back in 2017 as I didn't have time and my T3 seemed to be working fine.

Then all of a sudden it stopped working. Due to some personal issues I didn't get around to trying to mend this until now.

I've downloaded the 17.5 update. Have now tried this using 3 different USB sticks, all of which have worked in the past for upgrades. But, none seem to be working now. For a couple of them, the OSD just sits there at 'Beyonwiz T3'; for the other, it scrolls through the bootloader version text (I'm on the 2015 bootloader which I believe is the latest), and then it goes to 'Booting' but just sits there.

I've tried front and back USB ports, have had the T3 powered off for over a week and then re-tried all to no avail.

Without a USB stick in, the T3 just sits there at 'Booting' but never actually finishes booting.

Please help, as this is driving me nuts and I obviously have an unusable T3 at the minute!

Then all of a sudden it stopped working.

Can you expand on that?

If it wasn't booting before, then that may also be the cause of it not loading the update. Updates can only be done if the boot loader can be run, and if there's a problem with the flash memory, the boot loader can't be run. Flash memory issues can be caused by power supply problems, and the T3 power supply is notorious for causing problems.

If the original failure was that it was getting stuck at displaying "Beyonwiz T3" on the front panel, then it means your power supply died.

You need to call Beyonwiz or Warkus to get the power supply fixed. Powering up the T3 at the moment will risk further damage.

Please read this thread for more info. Pretty much every T3 has suffered this failure of the last couple of years.
