Updated to latest firmware, now no sound from HDMI-IN

Post by rog » Thu Jul 05, 2018 18:35

Since upgrading to the newest firmware I have lost the audio from my HTPC which is connected to the HDMI In.

I have uninstalled and re installed the Realtek drivers, that hasn't fixed it, the sound drivers are outputting 2 channel 16 bit, and the Beyonwiz is reporting that the only track I have available is Dolby Digital / AC3 downmix, but no sound plays.

If I connect the HTPC to the TV via HDMI then the sound is fine.

Is anyone else having issues with sound using the HDMI In?

Can I revert to the previous firmware for the T4?

Roger.

Can you please post your specific firmware version and other settings details?

Latest firmware can be fairly meaningless when there are regular online updates, etc.

I was about to say that I recalled someone else with the same issue, but then realised that was you on Whirlpool.

You can yes.

The TV isn't 4K UHD capable is it? You mentioned it was an older Viera TV on Whirpool. I just mention that because TV's with inputs set to UHD mode can lose sound when incompatible gear is connected to them. It doesn't seem to be the case here though.

If you make a recording from the HDMI input, can you play the resulting recording file using a PC? Do you get any sound that way?

No sound on new recording from the HDMI In when played on PC, checked older recordings and they all have sound.

Ok, so that definitively clears up the question of where the sound is being lost then. The T4 is not receiving/recording the sound (as opposed to it being a problem with outputting the sound to the receiver/TV).

Unfortunately it doesn't help resolve the situation.

I think that I said previously, that the sound and HDMI drivers received quite a bit of attention in the change from the 16.1 series to 17.5 series firmware, so something (probably subtle and complicated to do with the way the new firmware HDMI code handshakes) seems to be going wrong at a low-level.

If you roll back to the last 16.1 series firmware, and confirm that your sound is working again, then it would probably require PeterU to investigate further. If for some reason sound doesn't come back, then it might mean that something else coincidentally changed at the same time that you performed the T4 firmware upgrade.

Something to keep in mind is that if you do roll back to 16.1 firmware, your configuration backup file will be from an earlier date. All your settings will be intact and working, but all of your timers will be out of date (as they would have been ones that were set weeks ago when the settings backup was made).

I can perhaps do some testing with my HTPC on the weekend to see if I can replicate the issue, but to date, I haven't had any HDMI-IN audio problems with the sources I have tried.

I'll give that a go, are there any instructions on rolling back, where do I grab the 16.1 from?

I believe the last USB image of 16.1 is in this thread.

Just follow the usual procedure for performing a USB firmware installation. The same procedure that you used to install 17.5.

Rolled back and have sound back again.

Let me know if you need any more details from me to help debug/test what's gone wrong with the update.

Can't help wondering if HDCP is a factor in this.

My T4 has Foxtel connected via a splitter. Glitches in reception are a major cause of loss of sound but I also frequently get a Foxtel screen saying "Due to HDCP not being detected, you cannot watch this program." Usually triggered by turning on another device like the Bluray player.

After this, I will often get a loss of sound on HDMI-in. I have to reboot to restore sound. Never used to happen but can't say that 17.5 is a causal factor either.
