U4 USB upgrade - what's the trick?

Post by Jhprelude » Tue Jun 19, 2018 10:45

I have been trying to upgrade from USB on a newly installed U4.
When I first set it up I was informed of an upgrade online (large one) and so I installed that. (1000+files/278 <- humour?)
While asking a question on another forum it was suggest I re-flash the firmware from USB.
I downloaded the latest and placed it on a 16GB USB (FAT32) and plugged it into the front USB port.
I tried starting from standby and restarting using the rear power switch.
No startup alert offering me to upgrade from USB (as per the instruction sheet.)
Speaking of which it suggested an older smaller USB so I found a 2GB stick, formatted it as FAT32 and copied the the "beyonwiz" folder across.
No different. No recognition of an upgrade.
BTW both USBs were recognised as storage devices. I could even browse their contents, so the port works fine.

so what am I missing?

Not humour, it's really a large upgrade. The popup that listed the number of packages in the online upgrade should have recommended a USB upgrade, unless you were upgrading from very old firmware.

Hard to say. Exactly which upgrade ZIP file did you use? You need to use the one for the U4 (the model number is in the ZIP file name).

However, restarting from standby won't do an upgrade. It has to be a restart from shutdown (or from mains off, if you prefer).

sorted!
I was reading and following the wrong instructions!
Found the blinking power button and pressed it.
Still there was NOTHING displayed on the TV except the Beyonwiz logo during all this.

Yes the pressing of the "blue" button is essential. Even doing that I have never succeeded with USB firmware update for the U4. Trying again (internet update completely broke sound and no fix ever found). It has been at "Rootfile sys" for about 30 minutes. Will give it another 30 minutes then send it back as it suggests that the unit is defective - inability to update firmware.

Update: After about 40 minutes I switched off the power on the back. System rebooted and somehow despite the update failing the sound is back. Happy :D :D :D

Unplug all other USB devices first. I had trouble like this with a USB drive plugged into the rear of the U4.

Did not have any other USB devices attached - even removed the USB tuner. Not clear from the instructions if the USB tuner can be attached.

I think that's a bit hit-and-miss. I've never had a problem upgrading my T2 with the supplied USB tuner left in the back, but others have had to remove it.
