New Firmware for all T-Series Models (T2/T3/T4) 10/03/2017

Post by Wiz HQ » Mon Mar 27, 2017 16:44

New Software Upgrade Now Available - T2 / T3 / T4

v16.1 is a Major Upgrade and can only be upgraded via USB. You cannot restore your old settings from previous versions or it will cause problems, after you have upgraded and reboot for the first time you may be asked if you want to restore from backup, you must select “NO”. All your recorded content will be fine, you will just have to go through the setup wizard and rescan your channels and setup your timers again.

Download the Upgrade files here, please make sure you choose the correct model number:

There are a few more thousand changes that haven't been documented. I worked on this release for about a year. In terms of underlying changes, it's about as big as going from WinXP to Win7 - same but different. Not quite as drastic as going to Win10.

My concern is that the last time I tried the beta version is that I could not access my skins from my Overlay HD and the default skin was the only option. Has this been addressed in the new firmware.

Better to post that question to the OverlayHD thread if it relates specifically to that.

However, IanSav has been extremely diligent in ensuring there are no issues with the skin and the 16.1 firmware, so I would be surprised if there are any issues at all.

Hi,
I have an issue with my T3. The device never displays the correct disc space left. I could have 300GB left, do a few recordings and then it fails to record. It has done this twice when I was on holidays. Then, when I come home and delete just one recording it will show 100GB+ remaining even though the recording was say 5GB. Will the new firmware fix this issue? If not, has anyone else experienced this problem and what was the fix? I am using a 3TB drive if that helps. I have been living with this issue for many months since I got under 1TB left..

I can't get the upgrade to initiate on the T3 . I get the message to push the up arrow and nothing happens when I push on the front panel or the remote. It just defaults to booting after about 10 seconds...

I have a T4 and upgraded the firmware last night. The upgrade process went well.

After restarting, I was asked if I wanted to restore my configuration or setup again (not the exact words) so I opted to restore my configuration. This may have affected what I found since:

- Current timers had been replaced with some from 2015 (I am using IceTV, which may or may not be a factor)
- Not all channels were the same as before - some were missing so I had to re-scan
- A couple of channels are now missing their "friendly name"

Congratulations on what appears to be a lot of work behind the upgrade.

Step 4 says there should be no USB devices attahed. Does this inclue the USB Tuner for the T2 (and presumably T3)?

I note the step for upgrade to not do a restore and set up from scratch.

Clean build it will be.

However is the auto timer format consistent between builds so i can copy over my auto timers ?

That includes the USB tuners.

The upgrade can work with the USB tuners plugged in, but has been known to not work in certain circumstances. To be sure, it advises you to unplug them.

Wow - impressive amount of work done.

Well done all.

I have a minor visual change / bug.

When viewing the EPG, i'm missing a bit of the screen width. See attached.

I have changed no settings since the update and did not restore settings?

Thoughts?

You TV is set to overscan by default.

You should open the settings in your TV and disable "overscan" or make sure the "aspect ratio" is set to "per-pixel" or "dot by dot" or whatever your TV calls the setting (it varies).

If your TV lacks that setting, then you need to go into the T4 settings and change the GUI size in MENU->Setup->AV setup->OSD position.

The old 4.4 firmware automatically compensated for TVs that enabled overscanning. The 16.1 firmware has changed this, since ideally, no TVs these days should be using overscanning.

Quick question, I currently use IceTV. When I setup the T4 originally I had already setup a T4 in IceTV, setting up Ice in the T4 created a duplicate T4 on the Ice web page. Is there a "correct" way to go about setting up Ice again on the T4 to stop duplicates or is there a tie to a device ID somewhere that will keep things in order? Maybe it will be obvious when I try, but just trying to get my head around it now.

No. Ice TV creates a T4 profile based on the hardware fingerprint of your physical T4 (using MAC address I think).
When you upgrade and re-connect to IceTV, your T4 will use the same account profile that it registered last time.

Just remember to resend your timers to the T4 after the upgrade so that IceTV knows that the T4 doesn't already have the timers.

Thanks - I was hoping that would be the case :)

Hi
I have tried the instructions below exactly, however my T4 will not recognise the USB stick and just boots up normally after switching on from the rear power switch.
I have tried front and rear USB slots, FAT32 and EXFAT formats, USB 2 and USB 3 sticks.
The download folder named "beyonzwiz" has been unzipped correctly in the root directly of the USB stick

Any suggestions?

The stick must be FAT32, and not exFAT.

Some USB2 sticks and almost all USB3 sticks will not work for a firmware update, so you need to find another stick. The USB stick must be USB1.1 compatible, and not all are unfortunately.

Find the cheapest and nastiest USB stick you own and try that instead.

Thank you again MrQuade :)

There have been a few reports of normal booting after inserting a USB drive. I had the same problem with several USB drives. The current update is too large for the USB drive supplied with the T4 for upgrading (only just! 128MB drive, 132MB update).

I tried several 4GB and 8GB drives, all of which failed, either prompting for ^ but then booting normally, or just booting normally.

I eventually found an old 1GB drive, formatted it, and (under advice from Jai at Beyonwiz), I renamed the file \beyonwiz\hdp\noforce to \beyonwiz\hdp\force. This skips the prompt and charges straight into the update. I also ignored the instruction to store the zip file on the USB drive.

The upgrade worked.

Now all I have to figure out is how to make Samba share the Recordings folder, not just Movie and root. I'm sure I can do it by hacking the samba conf file, but I thought there was a way to do it from the GUI interface.

Editing the file directly is the only way, there is no GUI interface to seeing up the Samba shares.

I had problems with doing the upgrade on the TV to which I usually have T2 attached, so I attached them to another TV via composite cable and was able to do the upgrade and customise the settings. Managed to get the IceTV configured corretly.

However, I do not seem to be getting output on the HDMI port on either of the T2s. Get "no signal" from my LG TV (input is via an HDMI switch). It works pefectly if I attach via composite cable.

Any suggestions on how resurrect HDMI output?

There will be a new version of OverlayHD to match all the new features in the new firmware. It is mostly complete but all the beta testers have not yet reported in.

Hi All,

Just a note for future upgrades...

It would be helpful if the upgrade process can provide the information and/or a tool to update or remove setting values that cause a problem in recovering the user's settings after an upgrade. If the conflicting settings can be addressed then the whole upgrade experience could be simplified and improved for all. It would mean that users don't have to start from a clean base firmware.

While I haven't followed the situation for the 16.1 upgrade I understand that just a few FTP and SAMBA settings are the reason why the settings can't be restored. These settings could have been adjusted to allow the rest of the user's settings to be restored.

Regards,
Ian.

I updated both my T4 and T2 today to the 10/03/2017 firmware. I've now got an issue where both T series can't see each other. I've tried doing a reboot on both of them. I've had this type of issue before but a reboot on both boxes usually fixed the problem. I've been running the latest firmware on the T4 and hadn't upgraded the T2 until today.

I use my T2 for watching recordings from the T4. I don't use the T2 for recording at all.

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Cheers

Is Samba running on both?
Can you get to both of them from Windows?
Do both boxes pass their network tests (MENU -> Setup -> Network -> Network adapter selection -> Network test)?
Have you tried a router reboot?
Did you restore settings from 4,4 (you shouldn't have)?

Sounds like something our CP-M/86 man had - http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/forum/viewto ... 19#p148362. He fixed it with a (Billion) router setting.

There is a single command to run to restore the settings for FTP and Samba to fix those, but I think it is far easier to ask users to set things up from scratch rather than restore and repair. Not everyone is going to be comfortable or even physically set up to be able to access telnet or SSH.

There may be other settings that munge things up, and with the sheer number of changes and merges that PeterU has put into this update, it might be nearly impossible to isolate all the hazardous settings. One other user (I forget who now) reported random media playback issues after using settings from the 4.4 series. This was not related to either Samba or FTP, so seemed a bit random. Better safe than sorry I think.

When I upgraded to the alpha versions of 16.1 I simply removed a few appropriate lines from the "settings" file and have never looked back. Everything has been working fine since. What I did could easily have been implemented as a script or plugin for users to run to automate the clean up.

It is very easy to ask users not to restore all their settings. I am sure that the users who have to do all the work to put their machines back to the way they prefer would not agree that this is the easy solution. ;)

Ian.

At some point, the USB 1.1 compatible sticks are going to become very hard for new users to get. Is the fw going to/able to be updated so that more 'modern' sticks can be used? It's pretty ridiculous being told that you HAVE to do a usb update, and that you need to get your hands on some ancient (in electronics terms) piece of hardware.

USB updates are handled by the bootloader which only has a tiny amount of space available, so no room for comprehensive USB drivers or extra filesystems.

USB updates are necessary to allow for a clean-shaven update. All other less involved updates can occur via online methods.

The size and rating of the USB drive does not seem to be a problem. I used a 2gig USB 2 drive. However, you have to be careful about format of the USB drive. It appears that the bootloader does not recogise exFAT drives; I reformatted to FAT 32 and all was well. Not sure if any file system other than FAT 32 will be recognised.

Only FAT32 and only of the stick is USB1.1 compatible. USB2 and USB3 stick's will be a lottery in terms of backward compatibility.

The bootloader is the only bit of hardware/code that can perform a format and clean install and that bootloader is just too small to accommodate a USB2 driver.

The hardware in the Wiz is more than capable of reading USB2/3 sticks and you can use them to play your media files using most filesystems well. The Wiz hardware is only USB2, but the drivers will support talking to USB3 sticks in USB2 mode.

The difference is that the main firmware supports much larger driver sizes.

According to this post from peteru it's unlikely for the bootloader to support USB2 - http://beyonwiz.com.au/forum/viewtopic. ... 81#p127682

I see now (I think!). So my question should have been can the bootloader be reengineered to accommodate a USB2 driver? I agree with the poster that decried having to source some old USB stick that might work. The bootloader has its own (tiny) amount of flash memory available in which to store code. As-per the post that Grumpy_Geoff linked to, the developers say that there is insufficient room in that storage space for anything more complicated.
