Pressing MENU now crashes my T4

Post by Robertszatkowski » Sun Feb 28, 2016 08:10

I installed a few plugins, hoping they might allow me to play a DVD clone folder (BMDV). My WD device was able to play these folders quite easily.
The result is that the MENU button now causes the device to crash. I have tried to restore system settings (no backup sadly), restore software settings, upgrade firmware and remove the plugins. None of these have worked. The MENU button is still causing a crash.
Everything else is working. I can access the plugin menu via the remote button. The tuner is working and I can play files from the Media function. Just can't access the MENU.
I know that a factory reset might work but I ironically I need to access the MENU to do that.
The error message keeps changing but the most common one is attached as an image.
Do anyone have any suggestions of how I might fix the issue?

Sounds like you need to do a USB firmware upgrade.

You might still be able to restore your settings as the extra plugins won't be there though their setting information will be (depending on when you last backed up).

The T series can play folder-format DVD RIPs without the need to use any plugins. The top-level folder of the DVD ri just has to contain a VIDEO_TS folder or a VIDEO_TS.IFO file. Select the DVD's top-level folder in the media player (MEDIA from live TV), and press OK. The DVD should play.

From the crash screen, it looks like you've somehow managed to remove the FileCommander plugin. That's not a good idea. It implements the MENU entry MENU>Setup>Sources/Files. It's generally not a good idea to uninstall pre-installed plugins unless you're sure there will be no unexpected consequences.

If by factory reset you mean MENU>Setup>System>Factory reset, that won't fix this problem, even if you could get through MENU causing the crash.

You can fix the problem by loading the firmware from USB in the same way that you do a USB upgrade. Then allow the PVR to do any online upgrades.

I can't really comment on what the other error messages might be. They could be from malfunctioning added plugins.

Reload the firmware from scratch as above.

I recommend only ever installing one untried plugin at a time, and then test that. Don't uninstall plugins you didn't install yourself, unless you know that it's safe to do so.

Thank you both for your assistance. I reinstalled the FileCommander plugin and the MENU is back.

The outstanding issue is not being able to play a particular Movie Type.

The movie exists in the following file structure.

Listing
Volume in drive K is KIDS
Volume Serial Number is 6858-402B
Directory of K:\Movies\Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
27/08/2015 10:20 PM <DIR> .

As stated earlier the WD Media player we used prior to the T4 was able to play the movie as is. If there is a plugin that can allow me to play this movie without having to render it to a .mkv or such I would be very grateful for the information.

You said DVD in the original post. That looks like it's BluRay to me. I don't think there's anything to play BluRays on the T series, in the standard firmware or available in the plugin feeds.

Very sure it isn't a virus.

It sounds like your crash is different to this one which had a known cause (a user-removed plugin). You might be better served starting your own thread and describe exactly what it was that you were doing when the crash happened. Also, if you can supply a crash log file, that will often contain all the info required for someone to diagnose the problem.

And to add to MrQuade's post, "the latest software" is fairly meaningless so please include more exact details when you start the new topic.
