Remote Connection to T4 with Wiz app

Post by srto2 » Tue Oct 27, 2015 14:19

Hi People,

I'm trying to connect remotely to my (brand new) T4 using the Wiz app on an iPad.

The app works as expected on the local network. I've setup port forwarding as 8080 to 80 and 8001 to 8001 on the T4 which has a fixed IP address. I also tried forwarting port 80 to port 80 with no success either.

Open port tools verify that the ports 8080 (or 80) and 8001 are open. DynDns refused to work on the T4 but No-Ip is A-OK. Though I already had Dyn working (for years) for a VNC connection to another PC on my network, so though I don't think I should have needed another DDNS service I thought maybe the T4 "needs to know"... ?

So the app works locally but not remotely. Is there something about the app I should know?

While I wait for a guru to respond I'll try the Android version of the app with fingers crossed :?

Cheers,
Rob

Yea, no need for a second Dynamic DNS provider, the one that takes care of the other device on your network will do. the T4 has no need to know about that part.

Can you use Safari on the iPad to access the web interface on the T4 via your port formwards?

Yes! I hadn't thought of that. Works locally and remotely. So I'm in business. But neither the iPadnor nor Android WizOS app will connect remotely, though both work fine on the local network.

Thanks!

To help other users, I now have a new Billion NBN/ADSL router with built in VPN and I use an iPhone with tellymote app via the iPhone's built in VPN connection.

Direct to static router IP, no DDNS, no port forwarding or firewall config at all. Just works.

I did just buy a brand new router though to have this convenience. The last Billion ran 10+ years so got the same brand again. No complaints there.

What IP address are you using in the apps?

Well, my apologies for the late reply. I've been on the road and Telstra has been down at my destination. However I can now connect remotely with the app as well as Firefox & Safari via port 8080 (redirected to 80) when pointed to my ddns address. But the app is hit and miss. I can connect occasionally but need to reboot the iPad to ensure a connection. But Telstra is misbehaving since their outage that covered half of Port Macquarie and had many people foaming at the mouth... We had to reboot our phones as well to resume a data connection.

So I think that fundamentally the app is working but it could probably do with some refinement.

Cheers,
Rob

Reading between the lines I think simoncasey may have been asking about IPs in regard to are you using your home LAN IP address (192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x) or have you utilised your dynamic DNS/WAN IP address in the app?

I get around this using tellymote app which has settings for local LAN IP beside the WAN IP address for your home router which works well. Others may benefit from this info/app.

Well, at home I use 192.xxx.xxx.xxx and on the road I use, say, xxxxxx.ddns.net. My router redirects port 8080 to port 80.

But that's academic now because my unattended router has glitched and I can neither access the T4, nor my weather station, nor the router's secure setup. But IceTV can communicate at least.

Tellymote? Never heard of it but I'll check it out... But the wiz app has settings for LAN and WAN addresses too...
