Now cannot connect to my network

Post by Twizzle » Mon Jun 22, 2020 13:24

Hi

I have a U4 which has been happily on my home network for quite a while, yesterday I replaced my single band wifi extender with a dual band wifi extender but though during Scan the Network Wizard the U4 can see both 2g & 5g extenders (as well as the main part of the network of course) the wizard does not connect tn happily on my home network for quite a while, yesterday I replaced my single band wifi extender with a dual band wifi extender but though in duringo either of the extenders (or anything else) I have selected DHCP and chosen WPA or WPA2 Encryption and course the password is correct but still no go. When I go to Network Browser and choose WLAN it comes up with Your network interface wlan0 is not properly configured, so a network scan cannot be done. Please configure the interface & try again. The TV itself has connected ok to the 5g extender.

I can't see what to do next. Can someone kindly assist me.

Not at home so can't check.

The other day I fired up my 5Ghz wlan connection but auto configure didn't seem to work. I manually entered my gateway address, netmask and selected an IP address manually . After this it all worked fine.

If you can get to the network configuration of your TV, which has connected OK, you should be able to see your gateway address and netmask there.

If not, if you go to a PC connected to the 5ghz device and check its network adapter settings, they will be the same.

Else, login to the router and look for the wireless menu. The IP address you use on the U4 must be in the range of the new router or it won't work. The old IP address most likely points at the old router and will need to change if the new router uses a different scheme.

Thank you so much Paul_oz53 & Raymondjpg. I have managed to connect the Beyonwiz ok to the 5g of the Main Modem but not as yet the Extenders, however the secret was giving a new IP address to the Beyonwiz and I will have another go at the Extender tomorrow. At least I am connected.

Probably worth checking the security needed to connect to the extender. Any documentation that came with the extender should lay that out clearly.

I can connect my phone to both the 2g & 5g of the Netgear Extender but not so far to the Beyonwiz. Though I will try again today. I'd have thought that the problem lies with the U4. I gave the U4 a new IP address to get it to finally connect to the Main Modem but do I have give the U4 another new Static IP address to get it to connect to the Extender? Common sense tell me no but I just thought I'd clarify that. Thanks.

Each network interface needs its own IP address.

Do you have a particular reason for using fully static IP addresses rather than permanently allocated DHCP addresses?

I think the reason you needed to set a fixed IP address on the U4 when swapping from the 2.4GHz band to the 5GHz band is due to the router already having a connection on the 2.4GHz band with the wireless dongles' MAC address. Likely rebooting the router when changing bands would have allowed the 5GHz connection to succeed using DHCP.

If you can't connect the U4's adapter to the range extender, try changing the extender's control channel - on the 5GHz band use a low channel in the 36-48 range as some adapters can't cover the whole range, on the 2.4GHz band don't use channels 12 or 13 as again some adapters can't use those higher channels.

I read the netgear ac1200 extender manual last night. Not saying this is what Twizzle is using- just as an example. From what I read the extender is meant to inherit the device IP addresses from the router. Possibly the problem is the extender cannot find externally allocated static addresses.

If the router can be programmed to reserve the same IP address to the U4 mac address that may overcome the problem. It may require a reboot of the router and repeat install of the extender though.

It certainly is the AC1200 that I am using. So far I have changed the Extenders channel to 48 & am using 192.168.1.4 as the IP (via DHCP) for the Beyonwiz. No matter what I've tried it only connects to the 5g on main modem & it's signal quality is between 48-61/100 which is probably not good enough I would have thought. Thing is on the Wizard it says it's connecting to the Ext but when you do a check of Network settings/info it says it is only connected to the 5g of the main modem.

Paul_053 you say "If the router can be programmed to reserve the same IP address to the U4 mac address that may overcome the problem" How do I do this please?

Unfortunately I don't have a wireless dongle to test with, both my BWs are connected by ethernet. The manual is not very clear and my eyesight not too good, but when asked which network to connect to isn't there somewhere that you can choose the wireless network name (SSID)? You want to be connecting to the extender's SSID, not the modem/router's SSID.

That's not the model, that's the combined maximum speed of the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands - marketing hype.

Reading the manual, if you haven't used WPS to set up the extender, or changed the SSID, then the SSID for the extender's 5g wireless is NETGEAR_5GEXT. If you used WPS then the SSID will be based on your existing WiFi network name, with _2GEXT and _5GEXT at the ends of the names i.e. for 5g MyNetworkName_5GEXT.

Do you see NETGEAR_5GEXT or MyNetworkName_5GEXT as options in the BW wireless setup wizard?

If you have one of those options, and are connecting to it, then you should be connecting to the extender.

I suspect Grumpy_Geoff is right, you need to tell the U4 to login to the _5gext network instead of the router SID.

Regardless, you get the MAC address of the U4 from Menu>Network but you must be using WiFi.

Your router should have a menu for IP Address Reservation. It may appear under a different label. In that menu you input the MAC address and IP address and save.

Quite easy once you learn your router's requirements. You are best off rebooting the router, extender and U4 after making these changes.

Once this is done, on the U4 you should be able to return to DHCP but it's desirable but not essential. The router will set the IP address you chose always to the U4, ensuring the same effect as a static address but no risk of conflict. I reserve addresses for all my main devices, ensuring I can be confident which device is which on my network.

No. You are connected to the main router.

I don't have wifi enabled at the moment so I can't check which menu it is but for the wireless adapter there will be a list of available SSIDs. You must tell the U4 to access ...5g_EXT or the 2g version.

That is what I am doing when trying to connect i.e. Pointing to the 5gEXT. And the Wizard goes through the motions & says the network is working and when one checks it say one is still connected the main modem.

Check where?
What exactly are the indicators that the adapter is connecting to the router?

Perhaps take some screenshots. If the U4 is still network connected, you can use OpenWebif to take the screenshots using a browser, or alternatively either download the 'ShootYourScreen' plugin via the Plugins menu (assuming an available network connection), or download it from the below link onto a computer and copy it to a thumb drive and then install it onto the U4 -

Even though 5G of Extender lists as a choice I cannot connect. However when I go to Wifi Analyser App on my phone, the Main Modem's 2g & 5g appear as does the 2g of the Extender but not the 5g of the Extender so there is something wrong there.

Sounds like the extender needs to be a bit closer to the router.

Gosh it's only about 12 metres away without walls in between. Besides which the my mobile & other devices connect to both the 2g & 5g of the Extender. For now I'm leaving the Beyonwiz connected to just the 2g of the Extender. Will probably go back to Grumpy Geoff's suggestion of screenshots but not today.

If other devices are seeing the 5GHz ok then it's not the problem. IIRC, the list of SSIDs includes signal strength details for each network. This will be of interest.

That you have stable 2GHz reception is suggesting the configuration is not at fault. I've never had problems like this once the wifi adapter was activated and the configuration settings were set correctly. It just worked.

Is your wifi dongle a dual band model ? [Ooops, I see it must be as you could connect to the old 5GHz wifi. ]

Your original post doesn't say which receiver you are using. Mine is an EDUP AC1619 and works fine on 5 GHz on the Wiz.

The 2.4GHz band will reach further but is slower (less bandwidth) compared to the 5GHz band.
If you're not using wireless on the U4 for high-bandwidth traffic, then the 2.4GHz band should suffice.
I'd classify low-bandwidth usage being such as -
OpenWebif
Streaming recordings/live TV/media
Downloading plugins
Online firmware updates
Plugins: IMDb/YouTube/IceTV/YourTV info/E2iStream et. al.
Occasional copying of recordings

Which wireless adapter are you using?

There's definitely a Wiz operational "issue" where either the wireless router or the wireless component of the firmware (I'm not sure which) will revert to a previous SSID if DHCP is enabled. You can set the adapter settings to join a certain SSID but after the connection is established you'll see it's reverted to the previous SSID. The work-around is to disable DHCP and set a static IP on the adapter. Disabling the adapter, rebooting the router and re-enabling the adapter may also be another work-around (but more intrusive for the household :( ).

Again I agree with Grumpy_Geoff. Given the adapter is working and the IP address etc. is correct, I suspect DHCP is not working correctly. I would turn it off and rely on manual settings.

So long as you do, the static IP you choose should be away from the range the router assigns to new devices and identical on the Wiz and, if you reserve an IP address in the router, the router.

I don't think the IP address per se is the problem, but what Grumpy_Geoff said about the U4 and DHCP. So, as you say, try setting a fixed IP address in the extender (page 32 in the manual).

I don't understand what you mean by "should be away from the range the router assigns to new devices and identical on the Wiz". I understand the first part, just not the "identical on the Wiz" bit.

I don't think Twizzle has reserved any addresses in the router yet. I could be wrong about that.

Now it's connected the IP address is probably fine for 5GHZ as well. What I was trying to say was that if Twizzle does reserve an IP address it must match a static address set on the Wiz if one is set.

I don't see an obvious cause to Twizzle's problem. IP address conflict seems implausible so DHCP seems a potential cause given I had to turn it off when I setup my 5GHz adapter recently. Even so, given it is connected this seems unlikely to be the problem.

I'm betting it won't be, as experience has shown me that when attempting to change an SSID connection, the adapter/WIZ/router (one of them) will revert to the previous SSID unless one changes the client IP address. This is regardless of band.

Via my Dlink modem I have previously set my Extenders IP address to 38 & the U4 IP is 119 but we can as I say connect to the 2gExt but not 5gExt

Have you tried setting a fixed IP address in the extender (page 32 in the manual)?

From 38 what should I change it to?

Is it not the same setting the Extender's IP via the Modem. I must say the the Extender is not responding to mywifiext.net via wifi so would probably have to connect via Ethernet to get into it.

It depends if that IP address of 38 has been assigned by DHCP.

To check, follow the procedures set out on page 32 of the manual to set up a static IP address.

When you have accessed the extender's GUI, check to see if the settings say "Get dynamic IP address". If they do, change it to "Use static IP address" and use an IP number as suggested by Paul_oz53 i.e. away from the range the modem router assigns by DHCP to new devices, and matching any static address set on the Wiz if one is set.

According to my PC (Windows 10) you should be able to access the extender's GUI through http://mywifiext in a web browser.

WiFi extenders are about the worst invention that the WiFi environment has ever seen. What you want is a proper mesh network or at least a unified ESSID environment with multiple BSSIDs. Extenders do exactly the opposite. Avoid them whenever possible.

Choose something like Netgear Orbi or one of the alternatives, like Ubiquity Amplifi.

Thanks peteru. I only just bought this one on Sunday. What I don't understand is why it connects to 2gext but not 5gext on Beyonwiz but it connects to everything else automatically both 2&5.

raymondjpg Are you saying that DHCP of the U4 set an IP for my Ext? In any case when I had the Ethernet connection to the Extender last Sunda I set the IP as 38.

See if you can return it and upgrade to something better. It's probably not worth your time to persist with an extender.

If you set up the extender using the procedure "Connect With the NETGEAR Installation Assistant" outlined on page 12 of the manual, there is nothing in that set of procedures about setting an IP address. Did you set the IP of 38 in the extender's Wireless Settings?

If not, the U4 is not the DHCP server. Your router is. If the extender has its Client Link LED lit, then look in to your modem/router and check the DHCP client list. You should be able to identify the IP address of your extender there, if it has connected and the modem/router has assigned one.

If logging in to the extender using mywifiext(.net) does not work then try to access it by typing the IP address of the extender into your browser's address bar. Then check the extender's Wireless Settings to see if the extender is on a dynamically assigned IP or Static IP. If the former, then change it to static as outlined previously.
