"PT Sans Narrow Bold Condensed"
Ahh ok. I thought the new font in the icon was PT Sans Narrow Bold Condensed & the (just text) example was PT Sans. I should have done a Google search before I posted.

Anyway, IMO, the (just text) sample looks better than the new font in the icon.

I don't like the narrow font nearly as much as I liked the first version. Both are better than the original.

The two icon variants in context.

All the screens in easy-skin-aus-hd and Full-Metal-Wizard for the NetworkBrowser plugin have had a revamp, giving them the basic same layout as other setup menu and setup screens, and have had some of the list entries tweaked to give enough height for text descenders, avoid overlaps and give a more consistent internal layout generally. The re-arrangement also reduces the height of some of the list entries, so that all the lists of servers & services fit 8 entries instead of 7. The changes are so far only in the V2 pre-release firmware (and some not even there yet).

...
After copying the two screenshots to my PC & comparing them at full screen size on a 22” monitor, I think the ‘PT Sans Narrow Bold Condensed’ font looks better.

But there isn’t a lot in it IMO, & both fonts are an improvement over the original.

Can you adjust the colour to be a very dark grey?
When its black it kinda looks like it is just stuck on over the top of the icon (if that make sense).
The hand-drawn font may have been selected so that the text looks like it is part of the icon.

The hand-drawn test is fully black (FF000000), and I missed seeing your post before I committed.

I thought at first that the hand-drawn text was done to match perspective taper on the icon, but the sides of the drive are parallel.

The votes so far are tied -
Chunky text: peteru, Paul_oz53
Skinny text: prl, sub3R
"Looks great", but didn't specify which looked better: Gully

So I've submitted the chunky text version, giving peteru the casting vote, since he has it de facto, anyway ;)

I agree with the 'chunky' text. :)
