The easy way to use Womble Part One

Post by netmask » Sun Sep 20, 2009 11:31

As many have no doubt downloaded the free version I thought I would outline the way I clean up BW TS files after they have been demuxed by ProjectX into a video and audio file.

Load the video and audio straight into their respective time lines. Ignore the Input monitor - I rarely have need for it although there are many useful menu facilities for more advanced editing. Don't forget the right mouse button in Womble - experiment!

Expand the tracks to the window width by pressing * on the numeric key pad. This gives you more room to see what you are doing. If you really want to get down to the frame level then use the + key.

Scroll to the first frame of picture you want (assuming you have made either an edit in the BW or PX to trim pretty close to the start) then right click in the picture time line and again in the audio time line. Move the cursor back a few frames and select the video, left click and then right click to bring up a menu that includes video then select filter and then dynamic brightness. Drag the line down to black (bottom) and click ok. This will turn the few frames preceding the action you want to black - this step is important if you are using subtitles and want to maintain sync.

Do the same with the audio and select mute.

When you play your file from the beginning it will start in black and silence and then the program will commence a few frames later depending on how closely you trimmed in PX

All of these steps become automatic after a few times - I've managed to teach a few +70 year olds to do this with little prior computer or editing experience.

Initially I would use the mpa audio rather than ac3 at first as most stations use a bit rate of 448 (the quasi standard for 5.1) for stereo rather than the quasi standard of 384 and Womble interprets 448 as 5.1 audio but the track identifies as stereo consequently instead of a stream copy of the audio it reencodes to 384 if any edits of any kind are applied (not that you can hear any difference in quality). More of this later

I will post a Part 2 if there is any confusion with the help file within the program.

PS if you want to undo anything then control z is your friend - no menu item.
