HI - Can someone tell me the best way to convert .ts files to divx - freeware if possible..cheers

Because there are often errors in TS files (not a BW problem) but the transmission itself it's a good idea to get to know ProjectX and use the demux option - PX fixes a lot of the errors on the fly but only when you use the demux option, then convert the audio and video files to MPEG2 . You can then use programs like AutoGK to make a DivX or Xvid file. VideRedo also has a fix TS errors option as does Womble but neither of these 2 programs IMO are as effective as ProjectX.

AutoGK will also accept a straight TS file from the BW but there might be errors in the file so it can be a bit of a gamble.

Hi Netmask is right,

I use Proj X to demux (seperate) the TS Video and audio into two separate files. I then use Womble to rejoin them into a new Mpeg file.

I was using Auto GK for the conversion to avi (Divx) from the newly made Mpeg file. Which will take a few hours depending on the PC processor speed.

BUT I have discovered something called avi net (avi.net) It is fantastic.

I am amazed at the quality it produces from a large 5 Gig TV show file like The Strip for instance into a nice 350 meg avi (divx) file and I keep the DD 5.1 Surround track (if it is broadcast) I was shocked the first time I tried it.

Try it out. And let me know your opinions on the quality. I am certain I was not able to get this quality from Auto GK.

pvaStrumento is another free av stream repair program which can repair without demuxing the mpeg audio ("make ps" option). AC3 audio (if present) does get demuxed though. The resulting .mpg file can be used by virtually any video processing software. For a novice pvaStrumento is much easier to use than ProjectX (though ProjectX has a LOT more functionality once you understand the interface).

Most of the best free (and commercial for that matter) AV software originates from Germany. Obviously they breed a certain kind of nerd over there.

The great thing about projectX is you can use it to cut commercials out, and it will demux the subtitles and give them the correct timeline after the commercials are cut out.
It is the only package I know of to correct stream errors, fix up audio to video synch, cut out commercials and give you subtitles. And it is free!

I completely agree. The interface can be be rather daunting though for the novice.

AVI.NET is also a good MPEG to DivX or Xvid however I doubt if the results are any better or worse than AutoGK as it uses exactly the same programs under the bonnet. It does put some of the settings on the front page but these are available on AutoGK's second page (control F9).

Maintaining an AC3 file and especially if it was really 5.1 would leave precious little space for the video if the ultimate size was only 350MB - it's the old conundrum "nothings free" I've done a 1 hour TV episode to 700MB and kept AC3 stereo with good results but if the audio is a key factor I use a minimum file size of at least 1/3 DVD.

I'm trying to convert a stack of .TS files I have on BW to any one of the formats which a friend can use on their PC.

The .ts files certainly had errors and VLC wouldn't run. I also tried pvaStrumento and it froze part way though.

I ran ProjectX against the files and got an .m2v and an .AC3. The m2v file from ProjectX plays beautifully on Windows Media Player. It's not clear to me from the discussion what (free?) options I have to merge the files back.

Womble comes in three different versions - one free. Is the free version sufficient?

Do I need to take 2 steps in merging and creating an AVI file or is it possible to do it in 1? All I'm looking for is a format which is likely to be easy to play on a PC - or even a DVD player.

I wasn't aware that there was a free version of Womble - maybe the first one and that probably doesn't support AC3 audio from memory. The latest (money version) does do just abour everything including authoring a DVD and making avi's, mp4's etc but I still think a 2 step process results in a better looking file. ie make a mpeg2 file out of Womble and then use either AutoGK or AVI.Net to make a DivX or Xvid file. If they have made the first version of Womble free then why not give it a go to produce a PAL MPEG2 file. Tony has mentioned other programs that will remux that are free - do a search, toothache is affecting my memory today!

For HD(or SD): mplex (I can't find the windows gui version of this any more so have provided that version for you here: http://tonyspage.abock.de/beyonwiz/mplex.zip )

But a Windows box should be able to play the raw TS files with no processing, using VLCplayer or "The KMPlayer" and even Windows Media Player (with the right codecs for WMP though, bit of a lottery).
The only processing is to make sure you download as "TS" from the Wiz using WizFX rather than the raw tvwiz directory structure format.
If there really is a lot of errors, then definitely use projectX to demux, and then one of the two apps above to re-assemble (some avi/etc authoring packages support "elementary" or the split streams anyway, so no need to mux, but depends on what you use to author, there is hundreds to choose, look at http://www.videohelp.com )

I got it wrong about Womble. There are three versions costint A$109, $77 and $19. All have a free trial so I'll give them a go.

If you use the top version of Womble to make an avi after you have loaded the file in the timeline you need to save a project file (.wrp) and then go to MPEG4 exporter in the Tools menu. You then load in the project file and it does the rest. The normal Export window only does to MPEG.

Surprisingly this MP4 plays without a hitch - navigates etc, sound out only from the stereo RCA's required my switching to AV2 on my amp - normally use optical via AV1 and I have passthrough selected on the BW.

personally i wouldn't have cared if this old pot boiler didn't play at all but then I'm a sucker for 1950's SciFi

Next f/w release decodes AAC (optionally), possibly to SPDIF (I have to try to find a sample to find the true behaviour out actually, as my amp supposely will decode AAC with Japanese f/w on the amp!?!?)

Hello

I'm attempting to convert my ts file to mpeg2 with a final goal of divx.

I've used project x to demux but can't work out how to remux? I assume I use the .m2v file and set action to m2p? But I get the following error message.

"remux action allows no secondary files, processing cancelled" What am I doing wrong?

Just to to thanks the people involved in this topic. I was having all sorts of issues converting ts files to be able to import them into Adobe Premiere

This suggestion VideRedo at http://www.videoredo.com/en/index.htm worked really well. The GUI is a piece of trash but it works really well.

I think you would get better results if you use ProjectX first to demux the TS files into separate audio and video tracks that Adobe Premiere would handle quite well. In addition ProjectX fixes quite a few transmission errors. Instructions for it's use can be found on the link in my signature,

tonymy01, thanks for hosting mplex, its great !

I did have one problem though, Mplex doesnt recognise an .AC3 file as Audio file with its browse function.
You have to manually type in the file name.

VideoReDo is the best and easiest way to convert TS to AVI, in my opinion. Just open the TS with them, cut out the ads, and re-save as AVI. Couldn't be simpler. Been doing to all my TS recordings for months with no issues.

AviDemux, which I've used so far, does a similar job to ProjectX. It has a CLI interface so you can batch jobs & will convert formats, though not too well.

The problem it has is in synching the audio. It can't get information on the audio delay from the .ts files the Wiz produces, and the delay controls don't work too well. Other than that it is very fast.

AviDemux can't really be compared to ProjectX - ProjectX will fix timecode errors when you use the demux function and IMO of years of use I have never had an audio sync problem.

Converting to avi or dvix or xvid is a bit oldish nowadays compared to mkv. AviDemux has a track record of producing audio sync problems when used as an encoder, but it's real value is in fixing existing avi files that are either "packed" or have VBR audio (you need to convert the audio to CBR).

With BW files by far the most reliable way is to use either ProjectX or VideRedo first to obtain a standard mpeg2 file and then convert that to avi, divx or mkv or DVD VIDEO_TS

ProjectX can batch demux or transform into MPEG PS and call on other programs.
