1080p not mentioned in the BCM7405 Broadsheet pdf

Post by NoDeity » Sun Apr 13, 2014 13:14

I've seen a bit of chatter about whether or not the T3 can record/output 1080p... Wondering if it can be cleared up succinctly...?
The BCM7405 chipset pdf says it's only capable of 1080i output - http://www.avs.org.cn/fruits/Doc/%E5%8D ... PB04-R.pdf - which is disappointing, but I've seen a couple of posts mentioning 1080p, so what's the dealio there dudes...? :)

Hi Peter, can I ask where you got those figures, not in anyway questioning their validity, it's just that the "BCM7405 pdf" I found (as mentioned) only mentions as high as 1080i. Am I using the wrong chipset, or is there more detailed info on it elsewhere...? It certainly is nice that it can actually put out 1080p though. Thanks :)

I got these settings by logging into a T3 and querying the driver capabilities on the T3 directly. That's what the lines starting with the # mean.

That's about as authoritative as you can get. Certainly a lot more trustworthy than some old marketing spec. sheet.

The problem with doing what I did and Googling the chip number is that you don't know if the data relates to the version in the unit or even what has been enabled in the firmware.

I'm a bit surprised we haven't seen a manual for the T3 yet.

Actually the spec. sheet does tell us that it handles 1080P, just doesn’t do it clearly.
“HD/SD H.264/AVC Main and High Profile to Level 4.1 (HD),” means it handles playback for 1080P at a max of 30.1fps. It will also handle 2,048×1,024 at 30.0fps

Decode capability != output capability.

You could have a box that can decode 4k UHDTV content, but only display 720x576i picture. You can also have a box that can only decode 720x576i MPEG2, but output it as 1080p50.

The figures I provided are for the output capabilities. As far as decode capability is concerned, that will depend on the codecs a lot. The decode hardware should handle most HDTV content, including that of the initial Bluray specifications. From memory it should handle up to around 40Mbps streams. It's certainly fairly capable hardware, but it's the drivers, codecs and demuxers that will make the biggest impact. And as we all know, those can always be improved.

So how would this movie fare? Plays OK on the Popcorn C200 which has a now rather elderly Sigma 8643 processor?

Hi all, I am back :)
Tempted by the emails I have been getting about this unit.
I am in the "contemplating" list at the moment. How good is the SD broadcast quality upscaling (to 1080i, given 1080p30 isn't really an option for video-50fields/sec content)?

Also, I wonder how the quality is knocked about taking progressive content, outputting as 1080i, and my LCD TV is 1080p effectively display...? I suspect if you set the output to 1080p25, it would not look good for a lot of typical content (TV, some media).

Welcome back.

I have been impressed with the video quality. I haven't tested any progressive content so I'll leave someone else to respond to that.

I'm happy with the picture quality. It's as good as or better than anything else I have. In theory, my laptop with 1080p output over HDMI should be better, in practice it makes no difference.

I've got a Samsung Series 9 55" LED LCD with 96 zone backlighting, so picture quality is something I do appreciate.

The only current issues right now are the non 50 and non 60 frame rates. 24 frame playback output at 50 Hz is jarring. Switching to 60 Hz output is better, but not ideal. I asked the developers if it is possible to enable 24 frame output, they're looking into it.

No 24p output?

In my other thread, you posted a screenshot showing selectable output modes.
http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/phpbb2/viewt ... fd#p103667

Was that only applicable to viewing broadcast material and not media files? (I am very keen for it to support true and accurate 23.976fps rates)

After a bit of deeper digging and testing, it seems that the user interface and drivers disagree about what is possible / available. I trust what the drivers list:

50Hz modes: pal 576i 576p 720p50 1080i50 1080p25
60Hz modes: ntsc 480i 480p 720p 1080i 1080p30

Of course, a driver update could change that...
