T3 Record to network

Post by K1LL3M » Fri Mar 14, 2014 19:41

Can the T3 be set to record to a NAS?

This would be particular advantages when purchasing a barebones T3.

It would also mean you can use other smart TVs or media streamers to play the recorded streams; assuming DRM restrictions do not play here.

This is a feature that would be very useful to me as well as it would keep all recordings centrally and enable viewing of the recordings from any device able to connect to the NAS.

No DRM is applied by the T3.

If the T3 is a good DLNA server this would make all recording available to anyone on the network (Smart TV or Laptop etc)

It is that one feature that allows it to be the media hub of the house.

I hope it has been well tested for simultaneous clients accessing it.

The upcoming IQ3 is meant to do it so it will be an interesting comparison.

Brilliant!!!

edit

Peter, OT but

1. Do you know if it will stream M2TS with BDMV from the parent folder?
2. Do you think YMAJ could be supported on this?

it sounds like both of these could be possible and this could be a popcorn (media streamer) replacement

Thanks for asking this Paul ; prompts me to enquire what format the t3 records in ; straight mpeg ts like my toppy or proprietary ts that needs transcoding like my p1 [ or is that what's referring to DRM Ime thinking ? ]

Ime a bit jaundiced ; drm equates to Hollywood a bit much to me

edit ; if bd m2ts files are playable with smooth fs ; can the lossless codecs hdma etc be passthrough or downmixed to dd lossy etc

It has a DLNA server (plugin for it downloads when you try to configure the DLNA server). I haven't tried it so I can't comment on quality.

One feature I use often on my P2 - is copying shows over to the PC via the network (I use YardWiz). I do this mainly for the Promos and ID's which we play on a TV in our reception area (We are a regional TV office).

Will the T3 be able to do this, or will its DRM prohibit this?

Cheers

No DRM as far as I know so it will be fine. I haven't actually tried but I have played files stored on the T3 on my P1 and that's be fine.

Why do you think it will have DRM?

I think because you said
"no DRM is applied by the T3"

At first I read this as:
"no, DRM is applied by the T3"

And I suspect others did too.
So let's be clear: there is no DRM added to recorded files on the T3:

True or false?

Not sure how many ways we can say this!

True.

Hmmm....no, not quite explicit enough.

I think what they're really asking is not about the files ON the T3, but rather files that have been exported FROM the T3 and are now on something else.

Thanks for confirming. Yes, I mis-read about the DRM and assumed the comma.

I'd been intending to do this with my Synology too but I got lazy when I had to many other things on lately and instead I just added an auto-mounted folder on my nas to map an empty \\nas\media\dvr > \\t3dvr\harddisk\movies.

This has multiple benefits,

No copying/recording to the nas over 100MBps network
Don't need nas on all night for recordings so my nas shutdown/startup cfg saves it from running all night (extend HDD life?)
The T3's media button is now set to my T3's auto mounted \\nas\media files as its remembered root media source (no swapping between local media and nas media)
Bypasses other temp lan issues (while renovating some rooms in the house) so I don't lose recordings from lan power offs

On top of this I use the default T3 dlna service and point it at my \\nas\media\audio folder for mp3s/music for whole lan.

Hope this info helps someone. Both devices use automount great.

I'll get to record to has eventually, plan is to have 2nd T3 point to same location to share recordings/playback/EPG.
