DP-P2 freezes on HDD check

Post by rdurie » Sun May 13, 2012 13:06

Hi

when I turned my Beyonwiz on this morning it said there could be a HDD issue and did I want to check the drive. When I said Yes, it started the check then froze after checking about 70-80%. I checked out past posts on this issue and so I turned the unit off at the wall for 30 mins and then after several attempts, got it to reformat the HDD (losing all my recordings for the umpteenth time  )

My question is, what does this mean - is the HDD on its last legs or is it just a temporary one-off glitch?

BTW, I am underwhelmed by the reliability of PVRs. My old toppy did this on several occasions before dying of a bad power supply; I have only just replaced the power supply on this unit (thanks Warkus) and now this. I must have lost all my recording 5-6 times since buying the unit 2-3 years ago. I have a 6yo Acer PC which has not missed a beat - why can't PVRs be as reliable??!!??

Enough moaning - any thoughts?

Hi Rdurie,

Upgrade to the current firmware and *then* reformat the drive. There were disk related fixes in more recent firmware.

Regards,
Ian.

Ian, thanks for that. I understood I had to use firmware of the 1.05 series as my unit has a serial number 1022...... I was previously using a 1.07 series firmware, but i rolled back to 1.05 based on earlier advice. Rob

Rob I think you are missing the point. According to your signature you are using 1.05.334.

The latest firmware is 350 available for both series 1.05 and 1.07, so you should upgrade to 1.05.350 and reformat with that.
Cheers

Have you formatted the drive since install 350 or were they before that?

I formatted the drive again this morning - can't remember if I did it at the time of installing 1.05.350 - I would have follwed the forum instructions, but I am not sure when I did it.

My Topfield 7100HDPVRt has just developed faults after 3.5 years of not so onerous use; I suspect power supply and will probably call upon the good Warkus for a diagnosis and repair.

About two weeks after I bought the Topfield the ethernet port stopped working and the unit was replaced without question by the retailer.

A media player (I shall not name the brand) that I bought a year ago had a failed internal hard disk power supply after only two weeks. As there was no guarantee that a replacement would not develop the same fault (it was apparently commonplace) I decided against returning it and rely on streaming video over a wireless network.

How long before my P2 dies? It was used extensively as a media player for about a year, then for the past year about as frequently as the Topfield until now when it is getting a hammering once again now that the Topfield is off-line.

My guess is about 3.5 years.

There are PVRs on the market (I won't mention the brand, but it is one that has a reputation to uphold across a wide range of consumer electronic products) that are more reliable and robust. While not having all of the features of the Topfield and Beyonwiz, I gave one that I had before the Topfield to my son and it is still going strong.
