DP-P2 Firmware Step 1.05.xx & 1.07.xx Warning To Others
DP-P2 Firmware Step 1.05.xx & 1.07.xx Warning To Others
Hi all,
I have now had a strange anomaly twice, and that has prompted me to warn others about this issue.
The P2 as most would know has 2 firmware steps, with either 1.05.xx or 1.07.xx to be installed onto a user?s machine depending on the serial number of their machine. Serial number 1032098B00001 and above use 1.07.xx and below that serial number use 1.05.xx. Unfortunately both will install onto either / or machine.
Well, I have now had 2 separate P2 machines into the workshop, both with 1.05.304 firmware on them, but the serial numbers were 1032098B00xxx &1032098B00xxx. Now if you didn?t check the actual serial number, and just went with the series already on the machine you would install incorrect firmware when updating. The first one a few weeks ago caught me out. I upgraded to the latest 1.05.334 based on the fact that it had 1.05.304 already on it, and on reboot, the machine hung at displaying the version number on the VFD and would not go any further. After checking all sorts of different things, I noticed that the main CPU was the ?LF version found in the 1.07.xx model P2 machines, so I checked the serial number and yep sure enough as above it was in the 1.07.xx range, yet it had 1.05.304 on it, and seemingly from the factory too, as this machine was owned by an elderly retired man with no internet connection so he would not have upgraded it himself, nor is .304 publicly available anyway as I think that was a beta.
A firmware recovery fixed the problem, and allowed me to install 1.07.055 onto the machine and all is well again. The second machine came in yesterday, and when I saw it had 1.05.304 firmware on it, I check the serial number straight away, and again it should be using the 1.07.xx series. A quick check of the CPU also revealed it has the newer ?LF model CPU so it definitely should be using 1.07.xx.
So I thought I should warn anyone that is upgrading their P2 firmware to double check their serial number just in case before they upgrade, as otherwise a firmware recovery seems to be the only way to fix it.

Any DP-P2 with an -LF or later stepping chip set, serial number 1032098B00001 and later, must use a firmware built with a compatible toolkit.
That is any 01.07.xxx firmware or 01.05.304 or earlier.
The chip set will deadlock when trying to initialise the video co-processor if a firmware built with the newer "DVD fix" toolkit is installed, i.e. 01.05.305 and latter.
An emergency firmware recovery with a 01.07.xxx firmware is the only way to recover the unit.
==================================================
Older DP-P2 units may use either 01.05.xxx or 01.07.xxx firmware.
The choice is :-
If there is any doubt then use a 01.07.xxx series firmware.

- 01.05.xxx supports DVD playback from .iso or video_ts directories. Display of H.264 video as used in the 3D trial broadcasts will stutter badly.
- 01.07.xxx correctly displays all H.264 video. It does not support any form of DVD playback other than raw .vob files.
If there is any doubt then use a 01.07.xxx series firmware.

Firmware versions..
Sorry, just to clarify, with my older machine I can use either firmware?
ie. I can use the 1.07.xx firmware with the ability to take drives up to 2tb?
Or maybe I missread.

Re: Firmware versions..
If your DP-P2 can successfully run a recent 01.05.xxx firmware, then it will also successfully run a 01.07.xxx firmware. But why you would want to?longtimenewb wrote:Sorry, just to clarify, with my older machine I can use either firmware?
If your DP-P2 has 01.07.xxx firmware then I would definitely not recommend trying to run 01.05 series firmware. The recovery path can be very difficult for the inexperienced.
As I said the choice is DVD playback versus 3D H.264 TS support.
Also 01.07 firmwares gets the aspect ratio ever so slightly (~6%) wrong for LiDiC recordings, if that matters.
I expressed the exact difference between recent 01.05 and 01.07 series firmwares. 2TB drive support is not one of those differences. For the most part 01.05 and .01.07 firmwares released together have identical feature sets within the limits of the toolkit used to build them. Hopefully from versions 01.0x.350 the minor number will indicate this.ie. I can use the 1.07.xx firmware with the ability to take drives up to 2tb?
01.05.349 and 01.07.069 are the first versions from each series to have partial support for 2TB disks. Neither are public releases.
01.07.052 and 01.05.337 are the first versions that include 3.0.9 dosfstools which resolves the issue with handling certain disk bad format issues.
More a case of wishful interpretation, I think.Or maybe I missread.

Hi, Ian. I think that this should go into the FAQs somewhere. ProminentlyIanB wrote:Any DP-P2 with an -LF or later stepping chip set, serial number 1032098B00001 and later, must use a firmware built with a compatible toolkit.

Thanks, Peter..... I do know how, just got carried away in the moment and did whatever came to mind first.... I blame the medication......
I must also apologise for being absent from the forums for a while, I had all good intentions about keeping up the effort on the FAQ but unfortunately health & life generally has decreed otherwise. I'll try to get back into the swing of it....

Thanks Peter..... It's not trivial but thankfully not life threatening, in truth the medication is worse than the condition. I can liken it to a Microsoft application - every time it starts up, it steals focus and capitalises all the resources so that the user has to wait until it settles down before attempting to do anything useful...

Can I install Dec 2010 Firmware??
My DP-P2 has the serial number 10120-79200045, can I install the latest Firmware?
Posts seem a bit confusing?
Checked my BWz, it has Firmware DPP1-01-05-280'
Would I need to install 01-05-334 before installing 01-05-350?
and when I downloaded 01-05-350, I got a message "Windows needs to know which file installed this program" How do I download both files ?
I have Windows 7.

You can always load the latest firmware and usually should do so, and no you don't need to do the ones in between.chris1951 wrote:My DP-P2 has the serial number 10120-79200045, can I install the latest Firmware?

This topic is simply about making sure that you stick to the right series of firmware, so depending on your serial number it is simply about whether you should use 1.05 or 1.07 series.
Both have the same number on the end to signify the release so it will be 1.5.350 if your details are correct.
As for Windows, you need to save the file not try and run it and then either access it from your Wiz via network or on a USB drive.
Cheers

Are you sure you have a P2, that serial number looks old, it may be a P1.
Under Setup/System Options/Firmware/Information, you will see your system ID and machine type, check that and post back.
From that serial number it may not be a P2, I have only ever seen P2 units with Serial number 102xxxxxx and above, 101xxxx is usually P1.
Also the model will be stamped on the top of your machine above the blue circle.
I could well be wrong...

Re: Can I install Dec 2010 Firmware??
Hi Chris1951,
Regards,
Ian.
All Beyonwiz units can have their firmware upgraded. You just need to be careful to select the correct model number and firmware version.chris1951 wrote:My DP-P2 has the serial number 10120-79200045, can I install the latest Firmware?
Previously you said you have a DP-P2 now you are saying that you have a DP-P1. These are *different* units.chris1951 wrote:Checked my BWz, it has Firmware DPP1-01-05-280'
As the others have advised you, you can go direct to any version number required, you don't need any intermediate versions.chris1951 wrote:Would I need to install 01-05-334 before installing 01-05-350?
How did you download the file? You should just download the file and save it to disk. Do *NOT* try to install or run the file on your PC.chris1951 wrote:and when I downloaded 01-05-350, I got a message "Windows needs to know which file installed this program" How do I download both files ?

As I noted above you have mentioned two quite different model numbers. You must fetch the firmware for the model of Beyonwiz that you actually have. Installing firmware for a *different* model will result in an installation failure.chris1951 wrote:8.30pm. I got it too download to USB BUT when I went to install the FW I got the message. Could someone please clarify where they are getting the serial numbers from please?
In previous posts it has been stated like.....1032098B00001 with a 'B' in the middle of the number.
Is this serial number from the back of the dp-p2 box or from the setup screen?
My serial number on the back of the box does not have any letter at all in it. I can't check the internal serial via the menu as I'm waiting for my PSU repair.
Thanks

On the back of the box. There isn't a serial number in the setup screen. System ID (internal model number), firmware version, loader version, internal HDD type string, yes, but no serial number.mickotab wrote:Could someone please clarify where they are getting the serial numbers from please?

If you had firmware from the 01.05 series installed, continue using firmware from that series, similarly if you had firmware from the 01.07 series, continue with that.mickotab wrote: My serial number on the back of the box does not have any letter at all in it. If you'd like confirmation, you could post the serial number. That's more likely to get a response than saying what the serial number doesn't look like.

A warning!
A warning!
A friend has just bought himself a DPP2TB which came with 01.07.069 firmware.
Included in the packaging was a 2GB usb stick in a little white box labelled "DP-P2". On the stick was a single file "DPP2_Firmware_30Nov2010_ver_DPP2-01.05.350.wrp".
The unit serial number is 1032099A0xxxx so requires a 01.07.xxx series firmware. Fortunately I was on hand to help set it up and spotted the wrong firmware.
I've been away for the long weekend and haven't had time to chase up where he purchased the unit, but I'll check this out further now I am back.
