Warkus is a Legend!! (aka Mark)
Hi guys,
Just wanted to say that Warkus (aka Mark) is the greatest human being in the world!! I had a problem with my PSU for my DP-S1. Mark was amazingly helpful even when we worked out it was more than just my PSU. He helped me for over an hour on the phone, sent through replacement parts and got me going again. Amazing. You are truly a benchmark for customer service. We are not worthy!!
Thanks Mark and if anyone ever needs something fixed WarkUs is your man!!

Couldn't agree more!
I could tell from the dimming display that mine was in need of attention, and a quick look at the bulging caps confirmed that. Mark's instructions are so clear and helpful and his support via IM made it a simple process to undertake the cap refresh. This is not something I would've even contemplated without all the great work Mark has done.

Not sure what to say really - Thanks for the nice comments.
Gully,
if you wanted to merge this with the PSU repair thread to save on having a separate thread, go for it...
PLUS ++ It's embarressing - Every time someone replies to it, it goes back up to the top - LOL...
(greatest human being in the world) Somehow I doubt it, but I do wish my wife would say that...LOL

Re: Warkus is a Legend!! (aka Mark)
I would like to add my thanks here too. Recently I sent a PM to Mark and then phoned him. He spent some time sending emails and also sending me parts to get me going. It is truly refreshing to find a technician that is prepared to share their technical knowledge with others. As a forum we are indeed lucky to have your support. Not trying to embarrass you, but praise where praise is due.katman wrote:Hi guys,

Hi Grunta,
On the other hand, I wouldn't mind if he (and his family) moved.
Regards,
Ian.
No real need. He is just a call away. The courier bags to send parts back and forth cross the country in only 2 days. (Would be 1 day if Australia post still offered the quality service they *used* to offer. )grunta wrote:I think Mark should move to Melbourne .... where he could be more "central"

Funny, this thread just keeps popping up...lol...
Hmmmm...
Sorry lads, no can do... I love the sun to much to ever want to move to Melbourne. Just couldn't do it. Perth rocks, yes its quiet and small compared to Sydney, QLD, Melbourne, etc, and yes we absolutely SUCK at driving, especially in the right lane...
But its still the best place on earth to raise a family me thinks. I now have 3 beautiful girls, and a lovely wife to share the awesome weather with over here, and I wouldn't trade it for all the tea in china!
I am leaving the door open though to changing my mind in about 2023 once all my kids are teenages, as I am really not looking forward to living in a house with 4 hormonal women! There is a distinct possibility that I may consider moving interstate at this time, or possibly a lot further away! Uzbekistan comes to mind...

Warkus - Can you help me with my Error 0000
After reading through the forum, it seems that Warkus is the man to fix my ailing DP-S1.
It's been out of action for a couple of months now with the 0000 error.
Can someone help me get in contact with Warkus?
Thanks a lot folks, have a good day.

Well I'll add my endorsement of Warkus's work. Just had the front panel and PSU replaced in my DP-S1, so I now have a refurbished PSU and the super cap mod on the front panel display. Many thanks to IanSav for assisting me in installing the replacement parts.
I am happy to report that all of the odd behaviour my DP-S1 had been exhbiting for the past year or so has now gone. The CD/DVD tray no longer randomly opens and my Wifi is now working again. Previously the WiFi would just continuously return a SETUP Faulure.
I'm now considering renaming it from a DP-S1 to a DP-Warkus-S1 or "Warkus-S1" or adding a "Powered by Warkus" sticker
Many thanks Mark on providing such a good service and extending the lifespan of the unit. I haven't seen anything compelling in the current market that would make me replace my S1 yet, so this is a real bonus for me.

I had my Wiz apart on the weekend (well it is permanently apart these days) as I was getting sick of my 200G drive that was temporarily resting in the unit filling up (I have been meaning to get around to trying to recovery my 500G drive where the recording directory got corrupted, so it has been sitting out the Wiz for many months now), and decided given the latest f/w's supposedly give support for >500G drives to wack a 1TB SATA drive in, with the "Mark Warkus special" IDE-SATA converter, and works perfectly (so far). Lovely to see "789GB free" in my drive list (I copied the contents of the 200G drive to it after first formatting it in the Wiz and then moving it back to a linux box to do the drive to drive transfer).
So thanks Mark for the adapter, works perfectly (unlike the dodgy one I bought ages ago to use for reading SATA drives in my IDE external drive case).
Also thanks for the PSU repairing tips, I have fixed a few for a few people now, and even had to fix mine... I decided given the WD10EVDS drive was slightly more current drain than the original Samsung 200G, that I would beef up the 5V and 12V caps anyway, and noticed the 470uF 25V cap that is detailed in your guide as one to replace was nice and puffed up ready to pop, so out that went also and in with a new one also.

Good to see an indirect confirmation (through your DP-S1 unit) that the non released 01.05 beta firmware series also supports the 1 TB drive option.tonymy01 wrote:decided given the latest f/w's supposedly give support for >500G drives to wack a 1TB SATA drive in,
Until now I had only seen the larger size mentioned in conjunction with the 01.07 firmware series.
Happy filling up,

The jury is still out on whether it actually really, really works properly. The real test would be on a 2TB drive that's 95+% full of recordings and then the HDD becomes corrupted. If the disk can be checked and repaired, then it works. Just being able to install the disk and not having it rejected by the firmware is not really conclusive.
Hi Warkus,
I have one of the early DP-S1s that came out. The front panel is getting a bit dim so I think that the power supply may be on the way out. I was hoping that you could refurbish the power supply for me.
Can you please give me a quote.
Thanks
DG

Hi DG, if you can handle a soldering iron, you may find that you can do it yourself following Mark's excellent instructions. It is fairly quick and the details are so well presented, it's a great sense of achievement when the display is visible again. Also, your wife and kids think you're the legend, when it's really Warkus!dg wrote:Hi Warkus,

Hi Somebodyelse,
I'm pretty time poor at the moment so I thought it best to prevail upon the expertise of the Legend himself.
Thanks for the advice though.

Thanks Warkus
Another satisfied Warkus customer. My BW is up and running again like a dream.
Thanks again Warkus!
Thanks again Warkus!
Another happy customer and a ringing endorsement of Warkus's work.
I brought one of my Topfield 5000 in for a PSU job, which got exchanged on the spot.
Some addtional caps got replaced on top of the standard 6 caps, as orginally described in the Topfield forum.
An interesting quirk was discovered with the Toppy, it seems that the tuner circuits are mislabelled on the mainboard, i.e. Tuner 1 is actually Tuner 2 and vice versa.
For my DP-P2 I wanted the display to be dimmed, also no problem, I could wait for it on the spot.
The display was a version 1.21, not seen before in the wild.
Also, one of the blue LEDs had not been been working since inception, but because the two remaining LEDs had been so bright it had not been obvious to me. This LED also got replaced.
The dimming now is a pleasant non-blinding shade of blue.
Many thanks Mark on providing such a good service and extending the lifespan of both the units.
My Topfield MasterPiece will be the next inline for an additional overhaul, to change out some more caps, beyond the 6 standard caps which got changed some three years ago by a local repair shop, after handing them the original 6-cap-recipe.

It's ok Gully,
Thanks for the offer, but all good.
Am not distressed really, just didnt think the description was all that accurate thats all.
Lord Warkus fits better... (Now seriously, that was just jokes...)
It's fine. I am generally just a fairly quite person so being referred to as a legend does take a bit of getting used to.
Thanks though to all that have offered kind words. I will try to keep up the good work wherever possible.

Arise Sir Mark of Warkus
Well I asked Mark if I could buy some caps from him for my S-1 power supply as it had the Saxmon brand caps in it. They arrived and there was an extra 470uf cap . When I ask about it he told me there is another Saxmon cap that doesn't fail but I might like to replace it any way.
After about an hour on the soldering iron and my 61 yo eyes about buggered I was ready to smoke test. All went a treat until I went to close the dvd tray. The bugger opened back up. As I hadn't put the cover on yet I could see the tray hitting the power cable, A quick tuck under of the cable and all is good.
Note if using some solder wick that has been kicking around your tool box for 8 or so years the first 40mm or so doesn't work so well.
Thanks to Mark & the BW forum in general

Well, yet another incredibly satisfied client here. I've had some issues with my PSU for a while now but only recently got around to send it to Mark for repair. Very fast turnaround, excellent communication and - fingers crossed - a totally successful repair.
I'd pretty much resigned myself to having to buy a new PVR/media player and really wasn't looking forward to all the research etc involved with this.....I'd been thinking about moving on from Beyonwiz to another machine. Thankfully, Mark was able to get my S1 back up and running and hopefully with a new lease of life.
Thanks Mark!!! You've saved me a lot of money but most importantly, you've saved me a lot of time and stress from having to look around for another device.
EDIT: Have just been reading the other posts before mine and I think Mark's board status should definitely be changed from "Master" to "Legend"!

Well I have to say Mark certainly helped me out as well.
I had an S1 exhibiting the problems with power supply failure so followed his instructions I replaced the components only to find i still had issues.
Mark looked at my work and deemed it was fine so in the end he looked at my main board and found an issue in the power circuits for USB and Ethernet.
He fixed the main board and sent it back along with a replacement IDE cable to replace my damaged one.
So at the end of it i now have a working S1 and decided it was also a good time to upgrade the HD's again using Hitachi SATA drives and Altronics adapter from Mark.
2.5 terabytes of storage across an SI and 2 P1's with a couple of H1's for good measure
Overall I cant fault marks assistance. Thankyou

And yet another very satisfied customer! Mark sent me the caps and, with the reassurance I felt knowing that worst case I could pack up the PSU and send it to him, I dived in and repaired my S1 power supply. I'd forgotten what the display looked like it'd been so long since I'd seen it. USB is working properly again and I'm a very happy S1 owner again.

Mark has just repaired my PSU brialliantly,..... left my place (Newcaslte, NSW) last Thursday night and was back in my Post Box the following Thursday morning!
Absolutley brilliant if you take the postage out of the equation. Marks service gives Beyonwiz a free hit in my opinion and he should get some kind of regocnition from them.... and if its in the order of $$$ all the better.
Seriously though if I went through Beyonwiz H/O it would have been 4-6 weeks according to previous posts and more than likely to have cost far far more in $$$..... a process which would have left me with a bad taste in the mouth and probably make me look at other makes when replacing it.
Well done and thanks again Mark

This Mark in question also fixes other stuff. He fixed a PSU issue on my Tuner/Amp last year, about 18 years old, and he knew what to do....so he's not just a 'Wiz wiz, if you know what I mean

PS, the P2 is running sweet mate.
My S1 had not caused me grief, but it was very old. The unit was well used, probably the most used of any Wiz box, in the house.
We always, put this in standby and it has been well ventilated. Lately I could hear, intermittently, an HDD tick. Recycle in/out of standby, and it would be fine. Front panel, USB power, all worked fine.
It really is the 'Forrest Gump', box of chocolates, as to the issue(s) you may encounter with your S1 PSU.
With a CoTD DP2 to replace this work horse, I sent the PSU off to Mark for a capacitor refresh. I took the opportunity to upgrade to a 400GB Samsung I'd taken from a friend's other branded PVR that went bang and smokey.
All good, such simple and smooth process.
Thanks Mark.
