But that's my point - it is not what your previous post said. It stated that
Until file playback via LAN actually works on the BW (it simply doesn't at the moment)
and clearly playback does work in lots of situations. I am not saying it is perfect, just that your statements suggest it doesn't work full stop.

Which is because I left out the word "reliably" :)

In my situation, it doesn't work 99% of the time, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why - trying to play a HD file after a cold boot of the BW sometimes works, but mostly doesn't. Process of elimination has placed the source of the problem as the BW in my case - there's certainly no shortage of bandwidth on my (wired) network and my PC yawns at the task it's being asked to do in serving the file :)

I wonder whether the fact I'm using HDMI makes a difference?

No idea why it should but it's as good a question as any. (I'm not, BTW)

I guess it depends whether HDMI causes an increase in CPU use on the BW for some reason; the audio sync problem with HDMI does imply that some level of processing is going on somewhere in the BW, but whether that's on the CPU or on the HDMI processor I have no idea.

I tried using all different outputs - HDMI, Component and composite (but no s-video) and it made no difference to playback so not the extra processing required using HDMI out.

Other AVI formats

I have some AVI files recorded on my camera (Canon PowerShot S2 IS) that play fine on my PC but won't play on the Beyonwiz. Be nice to be able to play them...

YAAI tells me the following about the format if it helps:

MJPEG codec is not supported on the Beyonwiz and I don't think there is any chance of it being supported with a firmware upgrade.

Flash for the Wiz

Post by jaskelly3578 » Wed Apr 22, 2009 13:25

I see Adobe have released a version of Flash to be used with TV's etc. Could it be incorporated into the wiz which would then allow viewing of youtube etc from the comfort of our lounge chair.

The DP-S1, P1 and H1 have little free firmware memory available for anything. About 80kB in the current public version and about 123kB in the current beta version. And "kB" isn't a typo :)

HDD Storage

I know i'm not against having extra features that improve the wiz stored on the HDD.. :)

DP-H1's don't necessarily have a HDD.

The way the firmware is currenty structured, and the fact that the uClinux OS doesn't support shared libraries on the ARM architecture, make dividing up the firmware acrooss flash and HDD more difficult than is usually supposed. There are three main applications in the Beyonwiz firmware that do almost all of its functions. Wizdvp does all the GUI and viewing/playback control, wizpnp is the WizPnP file transfer/streaming server and wizpimp handles IceTV. Other auxilliary functions are rolled up into a couple of BusyBox multi-application binaries.

I'm not saying it's impossible to split functionality between flash and HDD, but it would require a major restructure of the firmware, and any new functions on the HDD would not be available on a DP-H1 without a HDD.

Not only have Adobe released a version of Flash for TV type devices, Sigma Designs have implemented the feature in their code!

http://www.sigmadesigns.com/public/Comp ... 90106b.pdf

The questions is now if or when Sigma Designs adds this code to the toolkit that Beyonwiz uses.

Regards,
Ian.

Now that starts to get interesting. I wonder what its memory footprint is like?

I'm not sure about the technical side, but would that potentially mean access to ABC's iview is possible? If so that would be a big content boost and hence help sales

There's very little chance that they will bother with making this available on old chipsets, like the one used in the current generation of Beyonwiz products.

Whilst T3's can play mkv files they appear unable to read/display any subtitles contained in the mkv files themselves.

This would be useful as a file type feature in future updates.

Thanks.

You are mistaken, the T3 can play embedded subtitles in mkvs.

What is displayed when you press the subtitle button?
Logitech Harmony Ultimate+Elite RCs
Beyonwiz T2/3/U4/V2, DP-S1 PVRs
Denon AVR-X3400h, LG OLED65C7T TV
QNAP TS-410 NAS, Centos File Server (Hosted under KVM)
Ubiquiti UniFi Managed LAN/WLAN, Draytek Vigor130/Asus RT-AC86U Internet
Pixel 4,5&6, iPad 3 Mobile Devices

Subtitles in MKVs are supported and work on the T3. This topic is not the right place to post though, since it was started more than 5 years ago and is about the DP-Series.
