Currently identified bugs (in rough order of importance):
*** General stability - when the unit is used continuously for 6 hours or more, lock-ups are more likely. The cause of this is yet to be resolved. ***
1. Picture and sound issues, as follows:
(a) colour space output is sometimes incorrect, as follows:
. (i) HDMI connection at 720p or 1080i - plays DVDs and other SD material at REC709 specifications, instead of REC601.
. (ii) Component connection at 720p or 1080i - always outputs at REC601 specifications instead of REC709.
This can cause green luminance to be down by up to 55% (see here for details. Workaround - for those with a video processor, pump in extra green).
(b) 'Pan & Scan' mode (for 4:3 TVs) doesn't work for live TV, instead it goes to Letterbox mode (Workaround - play the start of a 4:3 DVD, then switch to live TV. This will temporarily activate Pan & Scan mode. Note: some menus will throw you back to Letterbox mode).
(c) large overscan and right-shift when outputting 576i over component.
(d) some WINTV SD channels are not shown in the correct aspect ratio (squashed vertically, with black bars along the top and bottom).
(e) using digital audio output for sound and HDMI for picture results in lip-synch error, with the audio being ~100ms too early (workaround [if your amp has no audio delay setting] - use component connection for picture).
2. Timers and recording issues, as follows:
(a) one-off timer recordings are not automatically resumed after recovery from a power failure (yet repeat timer recordings are automatically resumed).
(b) timer end time is slow to update.
(c) when you try to change the service (ie. channel) while setting a timer from the EPG it seems to ignore it and use the original service, it is setting correctly just not updating it, looks like it is a cosmetic bug in the display of the channel name in the EPG timer setting popup. (link to post about it read the 4 after it too)
3. File playback issues, as follows:
(a) files moved or copied in .ts format (via WizFX) cannot be played by the unit (Workaround - use VideoReDo to re-save it in .ts format, during the process it corrects a few errors and makes the file playable again).
(b) problems playing the following files over network or USB HDD:
. (i) HD recordings stutter and freeze.
. (ii) VOB files freeze at certain points.
. (iii) music files (wav and mp3) with a name longer than 2 lines in the Windows info box causes the unit to crash after a short time, requiring a re-boot (see here for details. Workaround - rename these files with a shorter name).
(c) 4:3 material is slightly zoomed and cropped along the top and bottom of the picture.
(d) photos saved in portrait mode having a height greater then 3,000 pixels cannot be displayed (workaround - save them in landscape mode and use the 'rotate' function, or re-scale these images to a height of 3,000 pixels).
(e) when playing VOB files, you cannot select alternate audio streams during playback (only plays the 0x80 stream, causing some files to have no sound at all. Workaround - use VOBrator to change the audio stream to 0x80).
(f) pressing 'Play' after rewinding will start playing from a point ~15 seconds earlier from the chosen point.
4. DVD playback issues, as follows:
(a) many DVDs lose sound, freeze or fast-forward at certain points. (Workaround - rewind a little, then press play, but this may get you only 30 more seconds or so before it happens again - we suspect the cause is poor error handling).
(b) inserting a video DVD while a recording is in progress causes a blank spot or picture breakup in the recorded file of ~1 second.
(c) stopping DVD playback when "Mute" is activated locks the unit in mute mode (Workaround - go back into DVD playback, mute will automatically be cancelled, then stop the DVD and exit again).
(d) playing a DVD which is authored with a single title and no menu to the end of the last chapter will cause the unit to lock up. A power off at the wall is required to restore function to the unit.
5. Networking issues, as follows:
(a) video files played wirelessly frequently succumb to unpredictable freezes, even in systems that stream successfully, with the BW often corrupting the wireless network necessitating reconnection. (We suspect the cause is poor error handling, WPA/WPA2 encrytion overheads and/or limited buffer tolerance to changes in network/BW demands).
(b) many reports of wireless incompatibility with WPA2 or WPA/WPA2 routers (see here for more information).
(c) when viewing files on another Beyonwiz server unit, the sort order and filename layout are different to the recordings file list on the server unit (see here for an example of the current inconsistencies).
(d) for DHCP network, the unit does not request a lease renewal before expiry (does not affect most home users).
(e) wireless network settings menu shows the settings for the wired network, however the green "Status" button shows the correct wireless settings.
(f) switching networks from wireless to wired (or vice versa) does not terminate the interface of the appropriate network.
(g) Disabling the DP-H1 as a WizPnP client does not remove WizPnP servers from the Play File>Network list. The servers are still accessible from the DP-H1 even though its WizPnP client is disabled.
(h) HD programs can't be streamed reliably on a wired network from a DP-S1 using WizPnP. Low bit-rate (~11Mbps) appear to play reliably even if the server is showing live TV and making recordings (timeshifting enabled). If the bit rate is higher (~15Mbps, typical of Prime/SevenHD), streaming may still work if the server is making a single recording and showing live TV (timeshifting enabled). This may be due to changes in the network throttling algorithms since the last public release. This is an improvement over the last public release 1.04.144. Original report (also here). This problem is hard to characterise precisely, and appears to become worse at bitrates over ~12Mbps. Unfortunately, it's relatively cumbersome to find out the bitrate.
(i) HD programs can't be reliably chase-played over a streaming connection to the DP-H1. Recording two HD streams, one ~11Mbps and one ~15Mbps on the server (ctimeshift enabled), the 11Mbps recording could be chase-played, but the 15Mbps recording had no audio and stuttering video when chase-played. Probably throttling-related. Improved since this was originally reported in the beta forum.
6. Copy / move issues, as follows:
(a) sometimes get a "not enough space" error, despite the file being small enough to fit on the destination drive (usually happens to large files which have been edited down to a shorter length).
(b) if a "Move" function initiated from the unit fails e.g. by a power or network interruption, the original file is still deleted.
(c) some USB drives appear full, when they are actually empty.
7. Editing issues, as follows:
(a) sometimes the editing function will fail, and in some cases it will damage the file such that it can no longer be played.
(b) sometimes marker B is not automatically set at the end of the recording, which can lead to editing failure as in (a) above (if you still proceed by setting marker B manually using the blue button).
(c) trying to set marker B too soon after skipping or fast-forwarding (i.e. before the picture and progress bar have settled) can result in marker B being set in the wrong position.
8. Front panel issues, as follows:
(a) when audio is set to 'Passthrough' mode, the sound indicators remain displayed on the front panel (according to p.4 of the original manual, they are supposed to be turned off in this mode).
(b) when in standby, the front panel clock displays in 12hr time even if 'Time Format' is set to 24hr time.
(c) the "HD" indicator on the front panel does not light up when receiving or playing an HD signal.
(d) the USB indicator on the front panel does not light up when a USB device is connected or a memory card is inserted.
(e) when pause mode automatically de-activates after a long period, the front panel continues to display "PAUSE".
9. Miscellaneous issues:
(a) leaving the unit on for a few days without any reboot can cause the unit to become ultra-slow in response to any remote commands. Only a reboot fixes it.
(b) captions are not displayed for Channel 10 HD programmes.
(c) when activating the 'Shut down later' function during dual recording, the pop-up question re-appears after the first recording has finished, and does not time out to "Later".
(d) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Network' --> 'Setting' --> 'Network Device', the setting is changed even if the user answers "No" to the "Confirm changes?" prompt.
(e) the HDD doesn't spin down if you set timeshift to 'Disabled' in Preferences.
(f) OSD 0% transparency doesn?t save, when the OSD transparency setting is set to 0% it resets to the default setting of 20% when switched to standby then back on.
This was reported here in the previous 01.04.144 f/w.
10. Recording/playback issues:
(a) Names of recordings made on a DP-S1 usually don't display correctly on the DP-H1 using WizPnP. The recording file name is usually displayed in the form servicename_date_time.tvwiz rather than using the recording name on the DP-S1. Report.
(b) Popup>Delete on the DP-H1 on a recording served via WizPnP from a DP-S1 deletes the recording name on the DP-H1, but doesn't delete the recording on the DP-S1.
(c) Changes in the number of recordings (added or removed) in the DP-S1 Play List are not reflected correctly in the Play List for a DP-H1 WizPnP client.
(d) If a recording is deleted on a DP-S1, and an attempt is made to play it through WizPnP when the recording's name still exists on the DP-H1, as in 1(d), the recording doesn't play (of course), but there is also no error message. The "Loading..." popup appears very briefly.
(e) There doesn't seem to be a sensible sort order on folder listings when folders on a DP-S1 are viewed on a DP-H1 using WizPnP. Report.
There are some more details, with examples, posted in the DP-S1 and DP-P1 forum that shows that issues 1(a), 1(g) and 1(h) are not restricted to viewing recordings from a DP-H1, but also apply to the DP-S1 (examples refer to 0.04.144). Dennis (sub3r) has confirmed that these problems are common to the DP-S1 and DP-H1 in 1.05.192.
Current wish list (in rough order of importance):
1. Timer setting and improvements, as follows:
(a) in the "Add Timer" window, for "Date" add the actual day of the week i.e. Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat or Sun (rather than just a date only).
(b) in the "Add Timer" window, allow "Start Time" to be changed by "scrolling" left and right, similar to changing the duration. The "OK" button should be assigned to advance from hours to minutes to am/pm, then back to hours.
(c) allow recordings to be scheduled for specific days of the week e.g. Mon-Thu.
(d) in the "Add Timer" window, add an extra line "Auto delete file" with the following options: Never, 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, 60 days or 120 days. Default setting should be "Never". The unit could do a daily check and perform any necessary deletions.
(e) If you turn the BW 'On" while it is already "on" from a view timer, it will power off (no warning option like a record timer), please add warning.
2. Instant recording improvements, as follows:
(a) in the "Recording" pop-up window, allow a second press of the 'REC' button to be the same as choosing "Accept" (to allow instant recording without turning on the screen).
(b) in the "Recording" pop-up window, make "File Name" the name of the current programme, and when "File Name" is selected, allow the ">" button to advance through the list of programme names as listed in the EPG for that channel (currently sets name of programme 40 minutes from start time, which is often wrong).
3. Skip / FF function improvements, as follows:
(a) customisable skips and progress bar timeout i.e. in 'Set-Up' --> 'Miscellaneous' --> 'Preference', add menu items "Forward skip period", "Backward skip period" and "Progress bar timeout", with the ability to set values in seconds. Perhaps also if "Progress bar timeout" is set to 0, then skip without showing the progress bar at all.
(b) allow the single-press skip function to work on file types other than just .tvwiz files.
(c) improve smoothness of fast forward and rewind for x8, x16 and x32 speeds.
(d) add x1 REW speed.
(e) improve accuracy of the resume play position after FF or REW.
4. EPG improvements, as follows:
(a) have two EPG styles, "Timeline" style and "Guide" style, with 'Style' button swapping between them. "Timeline" style should show at least 6 channels x 4 timeslots, similar to Windows MCE and EyeTV (see here). "Guide" style should look like JustEPG (see here).
(b) if one tuner is not currently in use, allow it to scan all channels in the current favourite group to fully populate the EPG (for non-IceTV users).
(c) in the single-channel EPG, show the actual day of the week as well as the date, similar to the multi-channel EPG.
(d) add a menu item "Update Guide" to the "Pop-Up" menu, which will download the latest guide data (rather than having to exit live tv and go through the "Set-Up" menu).
(e) show a symbol to indicate a programme is a repeat "(R)" or broadcast in native HD "(HD)" by reading the appropriate IceGuide flags.
(f) add 'Record series' function, to automatically set timers for the same programme title wherever it appears in the EPG.
(g) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Network' --> 'Ice Guide', add a setting 'Download from' with options 'USB' and 'Memory Card' (for those who don't or can't connect their unit to a network).
(h) allow xmltv guide data to be used.
(i) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Network' --> 'Ice Guide', add a setting 'Update Time', where you can set a time for the unit to update the EPG data each day (for those who leave their unit on 24/7).
(j) add an EPG search function, using the on-screen keyboard and displaying a list of all matches from programme titles and extended information. Allow creating a timer to record any programme in this list.
5. Added functionality, as follows:
(a) 'Resume Play'. When playing a recorded programme which has been previously watched, display pop-up window with options "Resume" and "Play from start", with the cursor default being 'Resume'.
(b) adding and removing bookmarks.
(c) picture-in-picture.
6. DVD / CD playback improvements, as follows:
(a) autoplay discs when inserted (so there is no need to go into the File Play menu - hopefully will work for DVD movies, audio CDs, mp3 CDs and JPEG CDs).
(b) make DVD region-free permanently.
(c) allow playback of VCDs.
7. File Playback improvements, as follows:
(a) remove the automatically-play-next-file function. Allow the 'PLAY' button to function at the folder level. This would play all files in the folder, including all files contained in sub-folders of this folder (this would allow ripped DVD menus to function properly). In 'Set-Up' --> 'Miscellaneous' --> 'Preference', add options to set file advance delay time of [x] seconds for music, photos and movies individually (should only apply to 'play folder' mode).
(b) add an extra column 'All' to the File Playback screen, and make it the default selection when changing devices. The icon for 'All' could comprise a miniature version of the camcorder, headphones and camera icons stacked vertically (indicating that all three media types will be displayed together).
(c) make the "LIST" button cycle through the following sorting options:
. (i) newest to oldest (for photos, use Time Taken metadata)
. (ii) oldest to newest (for photos, use Time Taken metadata)
. (iii) A to Z
. (iv) Z to A
and remember the last-used sorting option when entering "File Playback". Also display a suitable icon to show current sort method.
(d) add the ability to randomise a folder or playlist.
(e) support for ISO, WMA lossless, FLAC, MKV, MKA, TIFF, M4A, H.264(AVI), MP4 lossless files, OGG, OGM and M3U playlists (click on links for technical specifications).
(f) when selecting files to make a playlist, the blue "Select" button should put a number in the box, rather than a tick, to determine the play order. The number should be sequential, starting from the current number of files already in the playlist.
(g) during slideshow, autoload the next photo in advance (so there is no "Loading" delay between photos - the ONLY time you should see this message is if you are skipping through them quicker than the Wiz can load them).
(h) improve screen saver / visualisation whilst playing music files. At the beginning and end of each song, show the cover art (.jpg file) along with tag data for song title, album title and artist. In between times, have some sort of pleasant visualisation (Windows MCE is a good guide). Also allow photos or muted videos to be played in the background.
(i) add an option to show thumbnails for recorded tv, photos and movies.
(j) reduce the loading delay when playing .AVI files.
(k) add a search function using the on-screen keyboard, and display a list of filename matches (including id3 tag matches for music) for the current file type in the current folder (including sub-folders). Allow immediate playback of any file in this list, as well as "Add to Playlist" function.
(l) show % full for attached USB devices.
8. Picture quality improvements, as follows:
(a) improve tuner settings for Australian conditions, especially UHF (a few people are having signal problems where every other brand of PVR seems to work fine).
(b) in the "Colour Setting" menu, add settings for "Red Green Blue", "Gamma" and (if possible) "Sharpness".
(c) improve DVD de-interlacing method from bob to motion-adaptive (see discussion here for more info).
(d) in the "Colour Setting" menu, add buttons for "Save user settings" and "Restore user settings" (perhaps yellow and blue).
(e) in the "Colour Setting" menu, add an option to display a test pattern (of course a suitable test pattern will need to be created for this function).
(f) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Configration' --> 'A/V Output' --> 'Component Video' and also 'HDMI Video', add an option "Passthrough", which will output the broadcast resolution unmodified (for those with external video processors).
9. Network functionality improvements, as follows:
(a) compatibility with IceTV Remote (allows setting timers via the internet, EPG search and series record).
(b) add to WizFX the ability to:
. (i) create and edit timers
. (ii) schedule copy/move functions
. (iii) copy external files to the unit's internal HDD
. (iv) delete recordings from the unit's internal HDD
. (v) continue a failed copy/move function from where it stopped.
(c) mark unavailable network shared folders with an icon (currently deletes them from the list). Make red button = delete share from list.
(d) files copied using WizFX should include the date and time in their filename, the same as it does when initiating a copy from the unit.
(e) if the unit is booted with no network connection present, automatically connect to the network once it becomes available.
(f) improvement to error tolerance and network robustness when wirelessly streaming files, whereby the BW provides more meaningful error messages (rather than the current "Unsupported format"), maintains connection and allows the user to recommence streaming in a timely manner.
(g) create versions of WizFX for Mac OSX and Linux.
(h) ability to connect to media servers such as Tversity.
(i) support for DLNA devices.
(j) ability to lock the ethernet interface to 10 half-duplex or 100 full duplex (to prevent video playback stuttering on some networks).
(k) (for Mac users) don't show printers as shared folders in "File Playback".
10. File copying / moving / editing improvements, as follows:
(a) when watching live tv while copy / move is in progress, change the "copying" on-screen message to a small spinning icon, or similar.
(b) allow folders to be created on the internal HDD, and allow files to be moved into these folders.
(c) allow copying or moving to an NTFS HDD (note: not possible with the Linux 2.4 kernel currently in use).
(d) the ability to schedule a time for a copy or move function.
(e) when using the copy / move function, the destination should default to the same location last used for this function.
(f) in the editing pop-up menu, make "Cancel" the default option (to prevent accidental cutting of a file).
11. Sound improvements, as follows:
(a) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Configuration' --> 'A/V Output', replace the three current audio sub-menus "Audio Format", "S/PDIF Output" and "AC3 Compression Mode" with three new sub-menus "Analogue Audio Output", "S/PDIF Audio Output" and "HDMI Audio Output". Each of these will have selectable settings of "Disabled", "2ch", "5.1ch" and "Passthrough" (except no 'Passthrough' option for analogue). See suggestions here for more details.
(b) remember the last audio track selected for each tv channel.
(c) make SD channels louder (less attenuation?), or alternatively make HD channels softer.
(d) speaker indicators on front panel should show the current signal (currently shows audio setting only).
(e) add a menu item in 'Set-Up' --> 'Miscellaneous' --> 'Preference' as follows: "Passthrough PCM remote volume", with two options "Enable" or "Disable".
12. Front panel display improvements, as follows:
(a) ability to rename channels (to stop them scrolling on the front display).
(b) ability to dim the front panel display.
(c) show clock and relevant display information together e.g. 12:35pm 9HD for live tv, and 12:35pm 00:05:49 for file playback.
(d) after selecting the "Shut down: Later" function, display the message "Shutdown pending..." on the front panel, and go back to normal display if shutdown is cancelled.
(e) add a remote control response indicator e.g. flash the tv or radio icon.
(f) in 'File Playback', show selected folder name or file name (to allow navigation without turning on your screen).
(g) show chapter number when playing a DVD (e.g. "Chapter 01 / 12").
13. User interface improvements, as follows:
(a) improve 'Information Box' for live tv, recorded programmes and media files to show relevant information, such as:
. (i) live tv - incoming video resolution, audio format, description, rating and "(R)" for repeat and "HD" for high definition if applicable.
. (ii) recorded programmes - same as above, plus programme length and file size.
. (iii) movies - video format, audio format, movie length, file size and file format.
. (iv) music - bitrate, song length, file size and file format.
. (v) photos - resolution, file size and file format.
(b) when viewing the timeshift buffer, if the user attempts to (i) change channel, (ii) select "Set-Up" or (iii) select "File Playback", display the message "This action will delete the timeshift buffer. Proceed?" with the options "OK" or "Cancel". The default selection should be "OK".
(c) allow "Pop-Up" menu during file playback, the same menu as during live tv i.e. Timer List, Recording Information and Colour Setting.
(d) add name of file to the delete confirmation pop-up window e.g. "Delete Survivor Fiji?" (since currently the pop-up window obscures the file list).
(e) circular menus (so that going through the bottom menu item takes you to the top again).
(f) in live tv "Pop-Up" menu, add a fourth menu item "Recorded Programmes", which when selected will display a transparent window listing all files contained in the "Recording" folder on the HDD. Selecting a file will stop live tv, play the chosen file, then automatically return to live tv when finished.
(g) in "File Playback", when playing a file, allow "Pop-Up" to show a list of all files contained in the current folder. Selecting one will stop the current file, and start playing the new file (would save time when searching for a particular file).
(h) in "File Playback" --> "HDD" --> "recording", automatically refresh the contents of the folder when a new recording begins.
(i) re-assign the functions of the coloured buttons as described here.
14. Time management improvements, as follows:
(a) after a long power interruption (when the clock has reset to "12:00" or "0:00"), the unit should:
. (i) wake up.
. (ii) automatically perform an HDD check.
. (iii) retrieve a broadcast time-stamp and reset the clock (regardless of 'Time Mode' being set to 'Manual' or 'Auto').
. (iv) begin any recordings which should be active at the current time.
. (v) return to its previous state (Standby or On).
(b) automatically adjust for Daylight Savings Time.
(c) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Configuration' --> 'Time' --> 'Mode', add a third option "NTP" (where the unit uses a network internet connection to obtain the time via the internet).
15. Remote control improvements, as follows:
(a) discrete ON/OFF remote control codes.
(b) during File Playback, make the "0" button swap between 16:9 and 4:3 modes (to enable non-anamorphic DVDs and files to play in full screen width).
(c) during Live TV, make the 'ZOOM' button swap between "Letterbox" and "Pan & Scan" modes.
(d) 3 selectable remote control code sets, so that one unit's remote does not interfere with another Beyonwiz unit (for those with IR repeaters).
(e) discrete mute ON/mute OFF remote control codes.
16. On-screen keyboard improvements, as follows:
(a) add characters ? : / to "Special Lock".
(b) add numbers (for those who don't use the Beyonwiz remote).
(c) assign the coloured keys to be as follows:
RED = select on screen keyboard type (cycles through lower case, caps, numbers, special characters then back to lower case [or alternatively add a row of numbers to the keyboard])
GREEN = insert a space under the cursor
YELLOW = delete the character under the cursor
BLUE = move left one character (start focus at end of text, wrap back to end if beginning reached)
(d) change the words "Special Lock" to "Special Characters".
17. Subtitle improvements (free-to-air TV only), as follows:
(a) make the 'subtitle' button toggle subtitles on and off, without having to navigate the pop-up menu.
(b) move the subtitle bar down further towards the bottom edge of the screen.
(c) set the transparency of the subtitle window to that of the current transparency setting in 'Set-Up' --> 'Misc.' --> 'OSD' --> 'Transparency'.
18. Miscellaneous:
(a) save configuration settings and timer lists to HDD, memory card, USB device or network HDD (to make upgrading firmware less painful).
(b) GPL compliance (to allow WizAps to be written).
(c) maintain the timeshift buffer when changing channels.
(d) reduce startup time by going to live tv sooner in the process (possibly disabling some features for a short time until startup is completed).
(e) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Miscellaneous' --> 'Preference', add a menu item "Auto delete at 90%", with two options "Enable" and "Disable". Setting to "enable" would delete the oldest unlocked recording automatically when the HDD reaches 90% full.
(f) allow recording directly to a networked HDD or USB device.
(g) allow a custom output resolution.
(h) add picture centering controls.
(i) auto-detect PID changes.
(j) support for wireless keyboard.
(k) when the unit is left in pause mode or on a menu screen for [x] minutes, run a screensaver. In 'Set-Up' --> 'Miscellaneous' --> 'Preference', add menu items "Screensaver timeout" with the ability to set a value for [x], and "Screensaver folder" with the ability to browse and select a networked or USB attached folder. Should the chosen folder be unavailable for any reason, a default screensaver should start.
(l) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Configration' --> 'A/V Output' --> 'Video Type', add a third option "Auto" (would play material at its encoded frame rate e.g. 24Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, for those who have a display which can support it).
(m) long button press with a pop-up infront of the screen that cycles 'A, then B, then C' etc. This removes the tedium of getting to 'S' by the traditional method of having to watch every artist folder scroll up the screen.
