DPP2 Network

Post by Nurseedward » Wed Mar 18, 2020 15:13

Hi everyone,
I have read the posts here and tried to make my DPP2 join my LAN network but I cannot make it work

I am running windows 10
I have connected ethernet from ASUS router to the Beyonwiz
I have gone to settings, enabled LAN, gone to windows sharing and scanned - got to 49% nothing happened. Looked for PC but it came up with a PC address with last 3 numbers highlighted.. unsure what to type there. Left it as is... nothing happened. Looked up the PC address from ipconfig and typed that ipv4 address into the beyonwiz - nothing.

I have a VPN unsure if this affects the connection?

For the Windows side - went to a folder, right clicked, shared the album - dont have an "everyone" option, only my name (administrator).. so I selected this.

For the configuration, I went to network sharing, there are 3 connections - ALL, Public, Private

private: turn on network discovery (tick), turn on automatic setup of network connected device (tick) turn on file and printer sharing (tick)
Public/guest;turn on network discovery (tick), turn on file and printer sharing (tick)
All networks: Use 128 bit encryption to help protect file sharing (ticked).....turn on password protected sharing (ticked).

I am logging into the computer with my password - I also entered this into beyonwiz (unsure if I had to but also made no difference).

Anyone able to shed light on what I am missing please? Thanks so much!

Windows 10 doesn't support SMB version 1 now. I think I re-enabled it on the Win 10 movie PC so that I could share it but can't recall now exactly what I did.

Win 10 is also extremely fussy about the account name and password. It may require a separate user be created because I did so out of frustration. I believe others have succeeded with password protected sharing off but I turned it on. My account name and password for the Wiz are only 3 characters each since there is nothing of importance in those folders (I have two backups of everything!).

That said, mine works fine - the P2 can see my Windows 10 shares. Win 10 cannot see the P2.

[Edit: My P2 won't see the Win 10 PC without SMB version 1 running. It's fine with all the other Wizzes and the Win 7 PCs.]

Try turning off those two (40/56 bit in the first case).

You need to go into Control Panel, Programs, and Turn Windows Features on or off. SMB 1 is there to select.

Ensure IP addresses are zero-filled (I can't remember if that's forced entry), e.g.
Subnet 255.255.255.000
Gateway 192.168.001.001 (example)
Also set 'Default Workgroup' as WORKGROUP (assuming that matches your PC).
On a small network, RED scan will usually stop at 49%.

I can't check further as my DP-S1 is currently headless.

I think that it's automatic on the PVR.

The important thing is to not use leading zeros for IP addresses on the computer, because for some libraries that interpret IP addresses, leading zeros mean "interpret number as octal" (even though, for example, RFC3986 explicitly disallows that interpretation for the host part of URIs).

I’m not sure if this is relevant. To get sharing working between all our 3 Laptops, one of the changes I had to make was turn off password protected sharing. Not sure if the DP series requires this though.

On a fairly recent clean install of Windows 10 64bit 1909 on a new HDD in a Laptop I found SMB 1.0 File Sharing was on by default, which I disabled. But I can’t remember if the DP series required SMB 1.0 to be enabled, I would have had it enabled back when I had our DP-S1’s networked.

The same account name & password on all devices & sharing to ‘everyone’ helps. If ‘everyone’ isn’t in the list, just create it.

I would suggest NOT clicking on ‘Let windows fix the problem’ (or similar words) to fix sharing issues on the PC. I did this & it changed most advanced sharing options for the worse (changed from Private to Public & changed from ‘Turn off password protected sharing’ to ‘Turn on password protected sharing’). This password protected sharing couldn’t be changed back (kept resetting after clicking on ‘save’ which is a known problem). The way to fix this was to remove the Guest password by; ‘Start > Run control userpassword2’. At the Guest account password leave the new password blank & click OK (even though this password was already blank).

Much off this rings a bell - I remember using advanced net commands to setup a password for my wiz account. I think I created "wiz" rather than use Guest for the account though. I recall grief trying to turn off password protected sharing - maybe this is why.

Yes Paul. It is unbelievable the options that are still in the latest Windows version that just don’t work anymore or screw something up.

A couple of things I have in my notes for our previous DP-S1s that may help:

On the wiz under ‘Network > Network settings for LAN > Setting’:
  • Gateway: (this is the router’s IP address). Check this as the 3rd & 4th number group changes on the wiz when disabling DHCP).
  • Primary DNS Server IP: (this is the router’s IP address). Check this as the 3rd & 4th number group changes on the wiz when disabling DHCP).
  • Apply Details: Apply twice with .320 f/w (which is an old f/w. Not sure if this was fixed in later f/w).
General comments:
  • To initially find the PC or to find the PC after clearing all PCs; enter the IP address (static IP in my case) after pressing find PC button.
    - OR -
just clear all PCs then press the red scan button.
  • Keep the PC’s share name short & don’t use spaces (use - or _ between any words).
Don’t ask me too explain any of that, it was too long ago. :)

Assuming you fix it, Dennis prompts me to note that if my P2 attempts to play a DVD VOB it will seemingly disappear. You have to repeat the attempt and it magically reappears and plays the second time. I think mine is on the 0.351 firmware.

Also, there are many file formats that partially or completely fail to play because of the outdated codecs in the P2. I really am inclined to shutdown the P2s nowadays as the WAF of the U4 is approaching tolerance interrupted by infrequent bad language. What really annoys her is if I forget to reset HDMI-IN to Foxtel instead of the dongle before going to bed.

[Edit: Gully was right, I did turn on SMB 1.0. And I created a polite 4-letter user account with some pain and a lot of Googling to avoid registering it as an email address IIRC. I still have 128-bit encryption and password protected sharing turned on. I set the password by opening the cmd line as an administrator and using "net user wizacct newpassword".]

Hi Paul. I just noticed your post in another topic. I hope everything goes well for you.

Thanks Dennis,

At the risk of being off-topic, the first surgery was a success and I can swallow now. May require another round or two to restore full function.

Despite being told repeatedly by many doctors my increasing PSA levels were no cause for concern, suddenly my readings jumped from 33 to 80 and I was declared to have advanced prostate cancer in my spine, pelvis and ribs and too late to have the prostate removed. The first line is hormone therapy which is very effective at killing and shrinking the tumours but not forever. PSA is now 2.7 from a high of 110 in November. At some point it stops working and that's when it turns terminal. The chemo now is to delay that day. 83% chance of 5 years with chemo, 77% without. May also have to have radiotherapy if the hormones and chemo don't kill off the bone cancers, which can cause severe pain but I no longer get the pain so it's working.

If anyone reading this has a PSA above 30, I'd advise immediate prostate surgery, despite the modern theory it probably won't kill most of you. It may not be necessary for many but the consequence of being wrong is catastrophic.

Paul, I can’t begin to imagine how you felt when you were told that. The doctors that told you there was no cause for concern have a lot to answer for.

I think I can speak for all the forum members in wishing you the best outcome in your battle ahead.

In mine, File sharing support and all three sub items are ticked.

However, if when you attempt to see the share in the Wiz network scan you don't see the Win10 share, it will probably be the password protected sharing setting giving grief. Try with it off. The share on Win10 has Everyone as the user with read permission.

I clear the scan first before running the scan. 49% is normal for the scan. After that, it should work.

Just a thought. The general cure all with making shares (and their contents) available to the DP series on Windows 7 was to enable Guest as user on the shares. As I recall Everyone would work, but only if the Windows Workgroup was WORKGROUP.

If you haven't tried that already, it might work.

I know that things changed up with Windows 10, and the suggestions to try with password protected sharing on or off still apply. I don't have a DP series PVR connected or I would try it myself.

How do I set up guest in windows 10 followed some tutorials... but it wants them to have a password as well... the one i read said to create a guest with a blank password..

I dont have "everyone" as an option in sharing do I just type it?
Workgroup - do you mean actually just type "WORKGROUP" in the wiz?

Thanks, Edward.

Guest account is hidden in Windows 10. Easiest way to enable it:

1. Open elevated command prompt (search for cmd then right click on it and run as administrator).
2. Execute "net user guest /active yes" without the quotes i.e. type it then ENTER.

The account once enabled does not need a password.

Everyone should be enabled by default in the drop down list under sharing|add. Once the Guest account is enabled, you should see that there too.

It is still worthwhile trying password protected sharing both on and off.

C:\Windows\system32>net user guest /active yes
The password does not meet the password policy requirements. Check the minimum password length, password complexity and password history requirements.

Also in the sharing, there is just my name in the options, and an add box, no other "everyone" exists there....
Thanks Edward

OK. You'll need administrative access to do this. So be sure you have that for your login account in Control Panel|Users.

1. Open the Local Security Policy console, click Start > type secpol.msc.
2. In the Local Security Policy console, navigate to Account Policies > Password Policy.
3. On the right pane, double-click Password must meet complexity requirements.
4. Select Disabled > click Apply > click OK and close the Local Security Policy console.

I apologise for leading you to this suggested solution and workaround to use the Guest account. If you are uneasy about doing any of this for security reasons, then don't do it! I run all of my Windows 10 PCs with an unrestricted administrator account, but I take precautions accordingly.

You look to be using a local Standard login account. You can only change security policy if you are logged on with an Administrator account. This can be set in Control Panel|User accounts. As far as I know the first user defined in Windows 10 has Administrator access. If you only have users with a Standard account you could try enabling the hidden Administrator account, in the same way as the guest account:

1. Open elevated command prompt (search for cmd then right click on it and run as administrator).
2. Execute "net user administrator /active:yes" without the quotes i.e. type it then ENTER.

If you get an error with that then things are messy. Another way you could possibly fudge administrator access is to set up a Microsoft account online, then add that to users in Windows 10 Settings.

Other than that I am out of suggestions that don't completely unravel security on your PC, something I'll not be going in to.

Windows Professional edition has ‘secpol.msc’, but Windows Home edition doesn’t.

I don’t use the Guest account on any of my computers so I can’t advise how to set it up.

If everyone isn’t shown in the drop down list for Network Access (by clicking on the ˅ to the left of Add - see the attached image), you can create it. To do this; right click on the folder you wish to share > ‘Give access to’ > click on ‘Specific people’. This will open the Network access window. Under ‘Choose people to share with’, type everyone, & then click Add.

I don't know for sure but I suspect that Everyone and Guest (when enabled) would be in the drop down list if Nurseedward logged in with an an Administrator account. I should have asked if an attempt had been made to change the account type in Control Panel|User accounts.

You could be right. I’m just thinking back to when I recently did a clean install of Windows 10 Home ver: 1909 onto a new HDD on my Laptop. I only use Administrator & when I was setting up sharing between the 3 Laptops I think I had to create ‘everyone’ on the clean installed Laptop. Whereas the other two Laptops already had ‘everyone’ in the dropdown list from previous sharing setup with DP-S1s, T2 & U4 wizzes. (one Laptop being Windows 10 Home ver: 1909 & the other one being Windows 10 Pro ver: 1809).

I haven’t tried a shared folder access on a Windows 10 ver: 1909 Laptop from a DP series wiz though. All DP series wizzes have been retired so I can’t test that.

Yes. That should indicate ‘Administrator Account’.

‘All settings (via the notification box on the right end of the taskbar) > System > About’ would also show the Windows edition & version.

I’ve found that sometimes a reboot of the PC & the router/modem helps to get sharing working after any changes.

I don’t know if this will help, but some settings worth checking that I changed from manual to automatic.

Access ‘Services (Local) - Extended’ via ‘Start > Run > services.msc’ & check if the following are set to manual or automatic:

  • ‘Function Discovery Provider Host’ ... (this was set to manual on all 3 laptops - I changed this to automatic).
  • ‘Function Discovery Resource Publication’ ... (this was set to manual on the clean installed laptop - I changed this to automatic).
  • ‘SSDP Discovery’ ... (this was set to manual on all 3 laptops - I changed this to automatic).
  • ‘UPnP Device Host’ ... (this was set to manual on all 3 laptops - I changed this to automatic).

I've avoided saying anything as I struggled with the same issues when I set mine up. The discussion reminded me of some of the steps I took,

I use Win10 pro so I can't comment on Win10 home. Password protected sharing is on.

What I did do first was create a user 'guest' using the "net user" command (run as administrator) as described above. I then assigned a simple password. This is used by the P2. I suspect that this path is no longer functioning in Win10. In the P2, the windows sharing settings are the user account "Guest" and password "***" and the workgroup is "workgroup". This is working as I type.

Separately, I created a user account "Bwiz" which is used by the T series and U series recorders. They could not access the guest account when I tried although the P2 still does. One difference though is the later machines have been set to version 3 of Samba whereas the P2 required version 1. It was a pain until I found out how to create a new user without a phone or email (keep clicking the "I don't have these details" option).

I didn't need to make other changes but sub3R did so check those out.

I think that was a suggested solution shortly following feature update 1803, but has since been resolved. Currently on 1909 everything is working as it should with those services at their default settings, except for a persistent issue if you are running ethernet and wireless connections concurrently when a periodic refresh of Function Discovery Resource Publication is necessary to make the host PC visible to others on the LAN.

This would be nightmare enough for seasoned networkers. Was it necessary to assign a password to the Guest account, once enabled, for a P2 to be able to access shares with it enabled as a user in Windows 10 shares? It wasn't necessary in Windows 7, and although I didn't try that hard I wasn't able to get access to Windows 7 shares when I attempted a user/pass logon as defined in the P2. That's the reason I always defaulted to using the Guest account on shares, although I could see that would not be an ideal solution for anyone who wanted to restrict access by certain users of the P2 to certain shares.

That was my situation. The Win10 Pro laptop & both U4s (previously DP-S1s) on Ethernet. One Win10 Home on wireless & the updated Win10 Home either on Ethernet or wireless depending on what I wanted to do.

Re the query: was the Guest password necessary?

Don't really know. On Win 7, I think I don't have a password on the guest account and the P2 sees them ok.I might be wrong but I don't think I ever did so on all the Win7s. I did on the Win10 and it worked so I stopped playing with it.
