FV-L1 (with officially modified software) Dead

Post by Paul55 » Mon Feb 24, 2020 18:37

I've re-posted this from the power supply repair thread as I suspect it would go unnoticed there.

Had a major power issue during a storm - overhead wire to house broke, building 'live', not good.
Among some others, my (unfreeview modified) FV-L1 was completely dead.
Took the case off and noticed the huge 400V/150uf on the high voltage side of the PS was bulging - the usual suspects (little caps on the low voltage side) look perfect.
I've ordered a replacement for the big capacitor and will post the results of the transplant.
Any words of wisdom before I start the surgery? The box hasn't been plugged in for a few days.
The original cap has a vertical line of "|" down one side. The new one has "[]" like squared off 0 - are they the same indicator or opposite?

Hi Paul55,

Actually, your original post was noticed.

I'm not expert on the wiz PSU but, if the main 400v cap is blown, it's likely that the switching transistor(s) and rectifier have been exposed to overvoltage too. It may work but it may not. You may need a major rebuild if the transient propagated to the LV circuitry.

There's always Warkus if it doesn't work.

Thanks,
The new cap is only $6 - so it's worth a try.
I've been recommending Warkus to other people for years without needing him myself.
I have a spare DP-P1 in the cupboard.

The main input filter capacitor experiences extreme high frequency ripple current as well as the savagery of the supply mains voltage spikes.

Make sure you use only the best quality brands for this component.

Have a chat (phone call) with Warkus and get his excellent opinion.

Thanks for the inputs people, but the replacement cap made no difference. Salvaged the HDD and binned the FV - along with an old H1 that I was using for troubleshooting.
Only have 2 x P2s and a P1 to go with my Toppy collection :? :?
I'm half looking for an excuse to try one of the new BWs anyway.

Donate the dead FL-V1 to Warkus for spare part.

I thought about it, but it's not cheap to send such a thing across the country - afraid I'm too lazy (and stingy).
Pity, as I hate sending anything useful to landfill - plus I was into my annual cleaning frenzy.

Let Mark (Warkus) know what you have and he might be happy to organise the courier so he can get the parts for free.
Cheers

I've done a power supply board exchange with Mark before (DP-S1). You send him the board, he sends you a refurbished replacement.

Mark generally uses Sendle https://www.sendle.com/en-au Not expensive, I sent my T3 over there for repair. Just packed it up in it's cardboard box, labelled and took it to the local newsagent who is an agent. Picked it up a week later. Strongly recommend it. He sends you all the details and a label you can print out to stick on the box. Really couldn't be easier for this 82 year old.
