WizTV? Adding a BOM weather radar image is a must.

Post by aussea » Wed Jan 21, 2009 15:54

I know it has been suggested on here, but one of the most used URLs in this house is the BOM weather radar (NSW) image at http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR033.shtml

I would love to have that updated image on my WizTV menu selection, and running in the background. We would accept the 128km static image if looping was out of the question :).

Just kidding.

That would make WizTV more worth while and relevant.

Cheers.

I agree with the idea, but as the OP said, it was proposed in the forum almost immediately WizTV was released.

I don't think that the WizTV client side has the ability to display the radar "loop", only static images.

Should this topic be in "What we want?"

Not a bad idea, but keep in mind you need to be able to set it to your locality (and maybe shift the reference point about), so it will need either some onec off loaction input or, better still, be able to be used interactively. Sorry id this has already been covered.

There aren't all that many radars. A menu tree that went to the State, then the radar location would be fine. If you could set a favorite, as for the weather, even better.

The images, including the 512km composites, are simply centered on the radar site. That's all you get on the BOM Web. The Canberra radar, for example, is at Captain's Flat.

You are right Peter. I did post this in the wrong spot. Sorry. It should be moved over to that thread at http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/phpbb2/viewt ... 7&start=15

Cheers.

Mods and admins are unable to merge, join or otherwise combine threads... so I've moved it as is to the 'What you want!' forum.

Well, I just checked tomorrows weather, and found the weather pages have been updated. There is now a radar image, very cool! (Just needs animated support for the eventual edition of the loops, and the job will be complete for the weather pages I think).
Well done Peter/whoever :-)

Yeah, it's a nice addition. Had to try a couple of cities before I found some rain.

I don't like the front page now - sorry. In my opinion the Favourite should be at the top. Or instead what about just default selecting your Favourite city in-place.

Also, I think there are too many icons. Can we just have one icon (the state with the capital highlighted), and then the buttons following. I certainly don't think the Radar should have its own icon.

I agree - favourite on the top and it is all looking too cluttered.

I also don't like it as much as before. Why is the favourite city not the default selection any more?

And do we really need a radar button for every city on the main page? I'd be happy with just a radar button on the forecast screen. I can't see myself viewing another city's weather more than once a year.

"failed to access page" for everything at the moment. Is there a problem this morning? Also wiztv has always been fairly slow for me between pages..around 5-6 seconds.

While it's nice to have a radar picture, in practice it's unreadable for me on my 4:3 68cm CRT TV. As has been mentioned before, the aspect ratio for WizTV is wrong for 4:3 TVs.

The WizTV weather service would be more useful if its information was more detailed. Something similar to Austext's weather section would satisfy the user's curiosity.

I just tried WizTV for the first time & am pretty disappointed with the selection of radar images available.
Are there any plans to add any regional area weather radars?
Port Macquarie is too far from Sydney to be covered by the Sydney 256km radar, so if the Newcastle 256km radar could be added I would be pleased.

I don't think Beyonwiz will bother making their WizTV a worthwhile product. I base this on their treatment of it to date.

Liked WizTV BOM images for the short time they worked. Brisbane image hasn't updated since September 2009!!

I had the same problem when I first bought mine. That was mid-2009. Restoring the firmware to its original state and uploading the latest one might fix the problem. I think that fixed mine.

I dunno if 334 has it, but they introduced a clear cache option for Wiztv that can help to clear up any "stuck" cached items.
