Weather Radar

Post by Raid » Sat Dec 13, 2008 14:58

In the weather option I would like to see the BOM Weather Radar loop.

http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR02 ... =true#skip

There is no need for the controls etc, I you just display the images in a loop, full screen.

As I understand it this site is in the top 10 purely for this function so it should get a lot of use.

Would this be possible?

+1

I think it would be a useful addition. Some radar locations have doppler wind speed as well as rain. I can't think of any reason that the existing Beyonwiz WizTV client couldn't display the static radar images. The radar loops are done by Javascript. I doubt the WizTV client can do Javascript.

Thanks

When you are in the "News" menu (showing all of the news item you can view) I though that it refreshed, or is this just my imagination?

How about we agitate to get the problems with the firmware fixed before we load it up further!

I don't think that rain radar would need any changes to the Beyonwiz firmware, and the WizTV server development was done in Australia.

This is, after all, a place to post ideas for further development of WizTV.

WizTV features have little or nothing to do with the firmware (now that the firmware includes WizTV support). Most WizTV updates will be server-side changes and not client-side (firmware).

You've never been sitting down watching TV and heard some thunder in the distance?

Would be handy to just be able to hit WizTV and check out the radar without having to get up.

Agreed. It'd be nice to hit the WizTV button and get some instant info.

BOM Radar is a great idea. Maybe with the function to select a particular radar as a fav similar to the recent changes on the weather page.

Wife just walked into the study and she is a +1 for this also.

Cheers

I would love the radar too. Not everyone keeps their computer on..though I do keep my router on and would definitely prefer to see the radar on wiztv. Ok so its turning us more into couch potatoes..who cares :P

 Are you saying WizTV can access the net if the PC is off, as long as the BW is
plugged directly into the router? I can't test right now due to rendering something
for the next day and a half, but this sounds interesting!

Provided the network connection to the Beyonwiz is through the router and not via the PC with Internet Connection Sharing. If it's direct through the router, the PC should play no role in whether the Beyonwiz can access WizTV. Just the same as for IceTV.

If they can add it then it would also be good if you could chose between say the 128k loop and the 256k loop of whatever radar you're looking at. Accessing the weather warnings would also be handy.

I suspect that the loops can't be viewed without changing the Beyonwiz firmware. The loops are just a sequence of 4 independent PNG images that are animated by Javascript in the browser.

I think the individual radar images can probably be displayed without any changes to the Beyonwiz firmware.

Some sites have 512km radar composites, too, for example Captain's Flat.

WizTV could display 2 or 3 (or even all 4?) of the of the sequential png images side by side in the correct order IF they were small enough. Or offer a menu list of the timeline images: 14:40, 14:50, 15:00 and 15:10. Neither as good as the real thing.

But that's about as good as it gets until a firmware update gives the wiz the ability to play a slideshow of images seemlessly.

Can WizTV play animated GIFs?

I checked one sample image: it's 524x564 pixels (higher than wide to incorporate the rain intensith scale).
