LiDiC for audio only possible?

Post by srto2 » Wed Jun 27, 2012 17:27

G'day people,

Seeing dealspace has the LiDiC currently for sale at $19.95 + P&P, it has ocurred to me to ask this question: Can you use the LiDiC to record just audio and name the files as usual? Or will something spit the dummy if there's no video?

Meanwhile, their site is down so the question is a bit academic at this stage but I was thinking of being able to record audio from a DAB+ tuner (by setting timers) as well as copying some vinyl records (and VHS video tapes which should be what it's designed to do.)

Cheers,
Rob

It may need video sync to do anything at all. However, even if that was the case, you could always provide video from an unrelated source and audio from the source you want to record, and then use software to lift out the audio track. Requires much more HDD space (temporarily) and transferring the recordings to a PC (or whatever).

Too much fiddling about, perhaps?

It seems to me far simpler to record directly to your PC or MAC. Years ago like many many years ago one could get an analog to multitrack pcm convertor, with video sync to use ones VHS machine as a high quality audio recorder. HDD recording changed all of that...

Ah! So you know as much as me :)

If I had to fanny about with superfluous video I could only agree. My idea was to mainly record DAB+ by timers, listen later and delete. I only have a couple of VHS tapes that I can't source as DVDs and have not really been worried about ever watching the noisy and grainy things again but at $19.95 why not? But to record radio easily would tip the deal for me.

Well I just tried it with my LiDiC plugging the headphone jack from my phone into the audio inputs of the LiDiC with nothing into the video inputs. The picture stays black but the audio is fine. The time shift buffer works as expected, you can pause, skip around it etc.

By the way I got my LiDiC from dealspace eariler this year for a song because they were paying $20 credit if you wrote a 500-600 word review of a beyonwiz product.
Need Reviews for Beyonwiz Products!
Not sure if the offer is still valid - I might have been the only one to take it up.

I was thinking of reviewing the LiDiC too - then it would have sort of paid for itself.
Actually I'm not that happy with it because of the aspect ratio problems and poor picture quality. If you have an old 4:3 video and a 16:9 TV it's going to look stretched and pixelated. I get a better result with my old Digital8 DV camera to my PC.

Thanks for that. Exactly what I needed to know.

Can you specify timers to record via the LiDiC?

Cheers,
Rob

Yes. To the Beyonwiz GUI, it looks just like an ordinary broadcast service.

Thanks, now I have all the info I needed.

Now all I have to do is decide whether I really need it or not :?
