Formatting USB HDD
Formatting USB HDD
Hi
I have a DP2 and I want to transfer some recordings to a WD Passport 500G USB HDD.
The USB HDD seems to be OK and the DP2 knows it is there and will display photos loaded on to it from a computer.
Howevever when I try to get the DP2 to format the USB drive, the format window doesn't list it as a device hence I can't complete the format.
Any suggestions please ?

Hi Ian
The drive is USB powered and I've tried both front and rear ports.
The firmware is DPP2-01.05.304 and the loader is 1.1.3.1.74.
I've tried a cold start with the USB drive already there but no go.
There's certainly enough power to read from the drive but I don't know whether or not formatting needs more than is available at the port. The annoying part is that the Wiz gives no message of any kind which is why I hope somebody has already solved the problem.
Regards
Ken

I think if the drive is NTFS formatted, it becomes read only and the Wiz won't let you format it, but don't quote me on that, as I always partition and format my drives externally, so not 100% sure of the Wiz behaviour. I would suggest using windows to remove the existing ntfs partition (right click my computer on desktop or in start menu, choose "manage", choose "disk management), and then create a full partition (or a split one, say 250G FAT32, 250G NTFS so you can support large media files >2G in size and also the ability to copy to the FAT32 partition with wiz recordings), and then one of the many tools mentioned here to format the FAT32 partition (seeing that Bill Gates doesn't like FAT32 any more, so if you try to format with Windows, it only supports 32G sizes now, so you need an external tool such as "fat32format").

Hi Ian & Tony
I'm definitely plug and play so you are helping me up a steep learning curve.
I've managed to partition the drive and format about 470G to FAT32. No change in Wiz behaviour so did the firmware upgrade to 01.05.350. At that stage the Wiz has gone into a hissy fit so I'm searching the forum for a solution to that.
I've found a powered USB port but can't advance on that until I get the Wiz up again.
Hopefully I'll be able to successfully close off this thread in a couple of days.

Is the USB drive formatted as NTFS? I think that you would get those symptoms if it was.Ken wrote:Hi All
The powered USB Port proved to be the final part of the puzzle.
It seems that the Wiz can read an unpowered USB device but doesn't have enough power to write to or format one.

Hi Peter
Yes it was and I worked all thru that . The final answer was the powered USB port. Just for interest sake, I actually wanted to play content thru a TV in my caravan and I'm still in trouble as it only plays AVI format and it turns out there is a problem in Windows 7 (specifically Explorer) which prevents the format conversion programs from operating. This is clearly something I have to pursue elsewhere and I am starting to wonder why everything is so hard.
