Cant assess NAS after reboot of NAS

Post by kjt005 » Tue Aug 25, 2020 10:31

My system was running great with a T4and U4 connected to a QNAP NAS for storage
yesterday The NAS rebooted and the T4 and U4 can no longer see the share that was setup previously.
the share on the NAS is fine and any files can be played from the NAS but not via the PVR's
i cant get the PVR's to see the NAS as a source.
I have deleted the links and re activated the nfs shares which show they are setup but the shares will not mount on either PVR.
this has happened before and after meny hours of mounting and unmounting they eventually worked but i cant remember what eventually fixed it

please help i am going crazy

thanks
Ken

What are you using to test that the NFS shares are working? Linux or OSX can connect to nfs more or less out of the box, but Windows needs a bunch of extra steps before it will see NFS shares.....it's more typical to connect using SMB from desktop PCs.

How are you creating the mount on the T4/U4? Are you using the network browser and selecting a share from the resulting list, or are you manually entering the server/share name into a text field? ie. are the nfs shares being discovered properly, but the Wizs are just not successfully connecting to them?

Are you pressing "OK" when the mount is created, or did you press EXIT? EXIT will generally break the mount creation process and cause things to not be completed properly.

What permissions are set on the NAS for those shares?

yes to all your questions
the share was working untill the NAS was rebooted.
The share is shown in the manage shares window but the red x is there and no mater what i try it stays there
i have deleted the mounts and recreated them as normal but always the red x shows up

Not many of my questions could be answered with a yes/no.

It was in manage shares, and then you deleted it.
When you recreated it, did you use the network browser to search for the share so that you could mount it, or did you create it manually by entering the IP and share name manually?

I am suspecting permissions changes on the NAS. Perhaps it applied an update prior to the unexpected reboot and that has changed something.

I checked the permissions and they were ok.
What i did find is that if i edit the mounts and change them to "mount as required"
it mounted the share finally
and then i set it back to "mount on boot" and it stayed mounted.

which of these mount settings is reccomended , as required or on boot?

thanks for your help again

Mine are set to "Mount as needed", and I haven't had an ill effect from that.
With the mount set as mount on boot, I am not sure if the Wiz calls a mount command when you save the mount definition, so you may have needed to reboot for the mount to appear?

Dunno. Sounds like it is working fine now though.

Please leave the setting as auto mount. It provides many benefits. Mounting at boot time is not recommended except for very specific circumstances - and if you have such requirements you would probably SSH in and manage the mounts by hand.
