Recording from online streaming TV

Post by dodgyemail-1 » Tue May 12, 2020 19:23

Hi. I'm new to beyonwiz technology and have no idea if this is even the device for me. I many consider buying one but I need to see if it can do the things I want it to do.

Essentially I want to be able to record online TV shows (which are streaming thru my roku box). The roku box has a hdmi port.

At the moment I watch Locast.org (from the usa) on my roku but there is no dvr in locast. So effwctitivley you watch whenever, but there is no way to record. Locast.org has about 50 channels and also and epg.

Is it possible to use the beyonwiz and connect to my roku to record locast.org. In particular I would like to know if the beyonwiz is able to detect the locast epg and schedule recordings for different shows.

Any help on beyonwiz capability is appreciated.

The Beyonwiz T4 and U4 models can record from an HDMI input, but they are discontinued lines, so you'd have to get either a refurbished unit from Beyonwiz, if one became available, or buy one secondhand.

The only current model, the V2, can't record from HDMI.

In this post I discuss a HDMI recorder that you could use for recording a streaming service. If you went that way you will also need a HDMI splitter such as sold by Beyonwiz to defeat HDCP.

Compared to the T4/U4, this is relatively crude but it does work.

Reviving this old thread as I have a similar application.
I'd like to save some Foxtel IQ2 recordings and I have a U4. I've never used its HDMI input, but it seems like a neat way of recording what I want without needing to purchase some other dedicated hardware (other than, evidently, something to strip away HDCP, because I just tried hooking it up and all I got was a black screen).

1. Anyone had any experience recording 1080i50 into a U4? Does it handle it ok?

2. Would the Beyonwiz Splitter: https://beyonwiz.com.au/product-categor ... splitters/ do the job I require?

Yea, you will usually get audio and no video when you run into HDCP.

Yep, works up to 1080p60

You also want to make sure you set the source device's audio output to PCM stereo. Dolby or DTS will not work properly.

Hi Luuuc,

I do this frequently with an IQ2 into a U4 via a splitter. Mainly sporting events. When you switch to Foxtel you may get a screen that says something like "due to a lack of HDCP this program can't be viewed". However, after a few seconds it goes away and all is good.

For IQ2 live and some recordings it is better to set the Foxtel output to 720p than 1081i. At 1080i fast-moving objects like cars and AFL footballers sometimes become subject to frame jitter when viewed via the U4. Far, far better at 720p. Occasionally I get a dud recording (1 in 30 maybe) so don't delete the source 'til your sure about the archive copy.

The Beyonwiz splitter is suitable I believe. I bought a random thing off eBay that looks the same and works fine.

👍👍
Thank you both for the confirmation & bonus tips

[Edited to add] I ended up just grabbing a splitter from my local Jaycar. It does the job just fine.
720p recordings are turning out pretty good.

If I may ... which splitter (make/model) did you get?
