Copying files from registered hd to pc - a solution

Post by blobby113 » Wed Jan 06, 2010 10:14

I've been waiting for the new firmware for ages, but thought I would try something else until it's released. My wd mybook world edition external hard drive has an extra usb port, for plugging in extra external hds. As the mybook runs linux, I thought it might be able to read the H1 registered hd. It does. I'm now busy copying the near-full drive to my pc, for converting using projectx and virtualdub.

The new firmware currently in beta test does not improve the ability of the H1 to copy from its registered recording HDD to another USB drive, so it's a good idea not to wait for the new firmware for a fix to that problem.

Beyonwiz recording HDDs (both external H1 registered USB and internal drives) can be read and written on Linux and OS X. Probably on many other Unix variants, too.

This can be much faster than USB or network transfers from the Beyonwiz.

I've been waiting for wizpnp, so that I could copy files over the network. I thought this was in the current beta (from one of your previous posts)

Ah. Sorry, I thought you were waiting for the copy to USB bug to be fixed. Yes, the H1 will get WizPnP server capability in the next firmware.

What a shame this ability has been delayed for H1 users. We've been aware for a couple of months that this is functional in the beta firmware.

So perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned it? :?

Of course you should have. We already have more than enough secrecy and disinformation from Freeview and DPG without the Beta testers joining the secret society.
Seriously though, this is such a significant feature and its absence is unique to the H1, so it probably could/should have been released as a H1 only fix while the 'common' problems were being resolved.
I initially assumed is was a hardware limitation. Now I realise it should have been enabled from the beginning - which makes the extra delays that bit more irritating (hope that's not too strong a word  )

Hi Paul55,

The problem is that the firmware code is shared between all the models. To create a special DP-H1 release would actually take some effort and result in a potentially orphaned version of firmware.

Regards,
Ian.

If I hadn't mentioned the addition, you wouldn't be complaining about the delay in getting it.

The other improvements and bug fixes in the firmware have been caught up in the major changes in the DVD code.

The WizPnP server enablement may have had something to do with the fact that I believe that I could have hacked the H1 firmware to do it anyway. Apart from the "real" version having the proper GUI interface, the "real" version works in pretty much the same way as the way I intended to hack it :) I actually got as far as having the H1 return a valid index.txt file to me and had worked out how to do the rest when Beyonwiz engineering said that they would implement it anyway, so I never got around to completing the hack. I suspect that by the time that this was done, most of the DVD rework was already in the code base.

However, be glad that they decided to do it this way, rather than removing the capabilities in the H1 firmware package that would have allowed the hack.

I can understand the reasons. But isn't the H1 somewhat an orphan anyway? - seems a little unloved
Without getting into technical reasons I wouldn't comprehend, couldn't the server capability have been added to the H1 version of .301 and be called something like .301H?
I assume all the .301s are subtly different anyway.

Edit: Sorry Peter, hadn't read your reply before I posted this.

Subtly, every aircraft is different ...
Yes, the DP-H1 firmware is certainly different from the firmware for other models - tuner allocation, and the ability to use an external HDD for recordings are probably the major differences.

I don't know why Beyonwiz didn't do a bug fix/minor new features release before doing the DVD work. Perhaps they underestimated the time it would take to get out a release with the new DVD code. They wouldn't be the first developers to have gone past their milestones :)

No problems about the crossed posts :)
