If you have a monitor with a hdmi input, plug the u4 into that to rule out a port problem.

If you have a microSD card (maximum 512GB), you can try using that. It won't solve the hdd problem, but it will let you record for now.

When you say 'crash', are you talking hard reboot, or gui reboot? I will occasionally get gui reboots on some anime files with dodgy subtitles. The price we 'pay' for sailing the high seas.

Why don't you just 'Burn' the subtitles in? - Handbrake.jpg This will permanently burn them into the video, which is not a problem if you always want to see them. Looks good.

A small issue -
Press the Imdb Search button to bring up the Title list
Press the Media button on any highlighted title - gui restart.

It works as intended if you press the Details button first, after highlighting an entry in the Title list.

I tried a V2 about 18 months ago, but had a few problems which could not be corrected (frame rate matching on external files), so returned it. I would always get a .3 sec audio delay on every hdmi recording. A quickish fix was to use mkvmerge or even ffmpeg to adjust the audio sync (which doesn't re-encode the video).

It would be fairly simple to plug in a usb thumb drive (on both units), do some recording (on the thumb drive) and then playback/skip. It should tell you straight away whether the issue is drive/unit related.
