Can't play a particular file on U4
Can't play a particular file on U4
I can usually play MKV files on my U4 but I have one series of files that will not play.
I can convert them using Handbrake to M4V files and they will play ok but the subtitles do not appear (and they are essential) the files are named (????) 1080p RTE WebDl aac h264.mkv I have resorted to sticking the MKV files on a USB and playing through TV.
Is there any way I can get the subtitles on the M4V files?
I wonder why these particular MKVs will not play on U4?

Thanks Grumpy. So can anything be done? Or failing that how can I make the subtitles play after I have converted the files to M4v.

See if you can get Handbrake to re-encode the video with an h.264 Format Profile of "main". Output as .mkv

Thanks Grumpy I'll try that.Grumpy_Geoff wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 16:04

Thanks Grumpy I'll try that.

I was able to re-encode with Handbrake but I couldn't find the tab that allowed me to choose "main" the file played ok on Beyonwiz but alas no subtitles.

Why don't you just 'Burn' the subtitles in? -
This will permanently burn them into the video, which is not a problem if you always want to see them.
I have the same issue with some anime files in which the U4 (and other devices) can't display the subtitles. Generally, this is a problem with the type of subtitles that were generated (in my case, they were .sup files).

I just fired up an old Handbrake I had.
I think you have to "add" the tracks from the input to get copied.

To expand on GG's comments on adding subtitles, when in the Subtitles tab, click on the Tracks button (my version of Handbrake is the latest) and then:
If the original file has "built in" subtitles, then select
Add All Remaining Tracks
OR
If the subtitles are in a separate file or files (eg show.SRT or show.SUB with show.IDX) then Select
Import Subtitle.
(sadly I can't figure out how to do a screen capture the popup after clicking the Tracks button as it closes as soon as I change windows to snip or Alt-PrtScr)
As an aside I have a U4 & a V2, both handle X265, which is what I use for shows that are going to be kept - file size is usually MUCH smaller, though conversion time on an mid range i7 can take a while.

Re: Can't play a particular file on U4
Thanks everyone. I have finally got subtitles.
Re: Can't play a particular file on U4
I kinda have that problem in the other direction. I have a T4 which won't play HEVC/H.265. As more and more material from "the usual sources" are now appearing in this format, I find on occasion I have to convert something down to H.264 in Handbrake.
It supports the hardware encoder built in to my GTX 1080 and will convert a movie in only several minutes (single pass VBR) - on a 10 yr old PC with an i5-4690K, which takes the best part of an hour to do the same job. Sure, the quality may not be as good as a software encode, but you'd be pushed to tell the difference.
