Green line on some SBS broadcasts

Post by stevebow » Wed Dec 27, 2017 22:55

I've noticed in recent times that on some SBS programs (here in Sydney) there is a 2 pixel wide green line on the far RHS of the screen, ref. attached example. The line seems to appear on the HD channels with SD up-converted material only. When they go to a commercial break with real HD material (or broadcast a genuine HD program), there is no line. It is not the T4 as I see the same with a USB tuner on my Mac as well.

It appears SBS have changed something in their up-conversion path recently, but just curious if anyone else seeing the same outside of Sydney?

Nothing I have noticed so far.

Just checking that you have your TV and Beyonwiz set for full scan width under their respective picture settings?

I have noticed the same thing with SBS in Adelaide recently.

Both TV and Wiz set to full scan.

It was present on SHS Viceland HD the other night when I was watching Flash Gordon (the source film quality was TERRIBLE too, not sure where they sourced it). Not there now.

Nothing under/overscaned, all 1:1. The screengrab was taken using the T4's grab command BTW.

I recorded Flash Gordon and it's present on the recording. The line is not always present, it only seems to be with SD->HD upconverted source material.

Yes sorry, very good point that I neglected to mention. The line was only present during the movie. There was no line during the ads in between.

Well it is available on Blu ray, so I wonder where SBS obtained their copy? http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Flash-Gor ... ray/10510/

I see the same thing on Batman, likely another upscaled show.

I'm in Canberra. Definitely a nationwide SBS issue.

Is the green line also there if you use the TV's tuner to view the same program?

I just spotted the line again on SBS Viceland.

I switched to the TV tube and the line wasn't there, then flicked back to the Wiz and the line was back. I checked both the TV Tuner and the T4's HDMI input and both are set for Just Scan.

I went to check the XBox FTA tuner since it uses the same HDMI input as the T4, but no line there. However when I returned to the T4 the green line had vanished despite the fact that the she event was still playing.

I'm not sure what to conclude yet until I see the green line appear again and I can test the XBox further (I don't 100% trust that the TV's just scan setting works as advertised when using the TV's own tuner). (I stupidly lost my timeshift before I thought to check that)

One thing that occurred to me was that some users with my model of TV have reported seeing lines on the bottom of the screen occasionally. It may have been due to the "pixel shift" function that is built into OLED screens to help stave off burn-in.

Anyone else seeing this green line have an LG OLED screen?

Actually, ours is a 2012 LG plasma 50 PZ series. We were getting the green line on the RHS on SBS (Viceland HD I think but not certain). Also, on ABC HD we were getting the dotted line at the top of the screen on some programs (possibly Rage and repeats of old programs from my fading memory).

Eventually resorted to changing the OSD display settings to eliminate these effects on both channels. We are content with the display as adjusted. Turning off overscan did not resolve the issue for us.

If anything, turning off overscan would have made things "worse" in regards to the green line.

I'm still yet to spot it again though. Good to know it isn't TV specific, thanks for confirming!

Is that settings on the TV or the PVR? I ended up hacking the skin, so instead of hiding the dotted line at the top, it hides the green line at the side.

The setting I changed is on the T4 connected to the LG 50" plasma. Menu-Setup-AV setup-OSD position.

The TV in the kitchen does not suffer the same green line so the T3 is set to the defaults. Ditto the U4 which is actually connected to the TV I use as a PC monitor in the study.

The green line is present in SBS HD programs downloaded as TS files to the PC. Don't have any SBS SD files so can't be sure if that's affected too. Doesn't happen on other networks.

Changing the OSD position shouldn't have given a green line that was part of the broadcast image.

Perhaps you mean that you turned on overscan on your tv and then shrank the OSD down to compensate for the oversxan?

Edited this post after reviewing how to interpret the term "Overscan",

Apologies Adoxa, it was the TV setting that I changed that pushes the line off the screen, not OSD. Yes MrQuade, it was set to Just Scan and I changed to 16:9, which is an Overscan setting on the LG. Changed OSD to rescale the T4 display. With the TV set to Just Scan and the OSD settings at 720x576 on playback of anything recorded on SBS HD, I get a bright green line on the RHS of the screen.

To eliminate this effect (and a dotted line at the top of the display on Rage on ABC live TV), I use settings of 16:9 for the TV and 704/555 for the OSD. This gives the best compromise with our TV. The green line must be part of the Melbourne broadcast because it is visible on all SBS HD recordings played back on the PC. The original theory I notice was that it is because of upscaling of SD content for HD broadcast. I have no insight whether this is true. Never see the green line on any other network or station, nor on other sets.

The dotted line on ABC HD remained despite setting "Hide dotted line on this service" to "on" on ABC HD. Another reason I allow overscan on that set.

The plan is to replace the LG with something UHD so the setup will change when we do that. The U4 is part of the plan, as is the NBN, the HDMI dongle and Netflix.

Thanks for that. I tried changing OSD position with no effect, but didn't change the TV to go with it. As it seems to only happen on some SBS Viceland HD broadcasts, I'll leave it be and turn on the skin hack as needed.
