Tuners C & D Occasional Fails!

Post by Jan » Mon Jun 01, 2020 18:07

HI Everyone. Sometimes, for no apparent reason (the most recent being last night), I seem to lose the signal on C & D tuners. No great issue, as a reboot gets them back. But it is frustrating that I have no idea this has happened until I realise timers haven't kicked in because of this. It would be really good if when there isn't a tuner available for recording because of the fails, that there would be a pop-up message indicating the problem so that I could fix it immediately, rather than just noticing at the end of the night when expected recordings haven't happened.

So firstly, have I missed a setting that would give me the error message, and secondly, any ideas why the tuners would fail in the first place? As I said they always come back with a reboot. I'm thinking that I'll have to do a bit of a tuner check each day before my timers are due to start to make sure they are all available. I hate having to reboot because every time I do that, I lose my Front Panel Display settings, and have to do them again!

First World Problems I know!!

Is the USB tuner device connected to a device that may be losing power such as a hub? If the V2 is running, the tuners must never be unplugged or powered down otherwise, the V2 won't be able to find them until you reboot.

I notice that from one of your earlier posts, you tuner was plugged into a hub.

Yes, it is plugged into a Beyonwiz supplied hub.

Does that hub ever get powered down for any reason?

Is it plugged into an "Eco" power board maybe?

No, it doesn't. Well it has done when I was moving stuff around, but not at the times I have the tuner issues.

It is plugged into a powerboard, but not an "Eco" one.

I have some hazy recollection about a Beyonwiz supplied hub in a metal case that had some issue with some of the connectors not making a very secure connection and possibly causing reliability issues unless the cables were carefully manipulated into place. Is it possible that you may be afflicted by that?

Was it this?

We have found that there is a little movement in the metal case of hub so you need to push on the USB side at one end while pushing the power cable in at the other so it goes all the way in, it should light up even when not connected to the V2 or when the V2 is off.

Maybe, but how would I know that!

Regarding the light, since reading this, I keep having a look whenever I think of it, and it is always on, even when the V2 isn't. But just to clarify, when saying light should be on when V2 is off, did Wiz HQ mean in Standby, or full shutdown. I only ever turn off to Standby.

Does the reboot fix it without you doing anything else - no fiddling with USB connections, antenna cable?

Edited - to add, the next time it happens, check to see if the TP-Link wireless adapter is still working, and if not it may indicate the hub is the problem.

Hi Geoff. Yes, just the reboot. Nothing else and no fiddling is needed. I think I did check the adapter the other night when it happened, and it was fine. I haven't had any wifi issues for quite a while now. Bugger, I bet I just jinxed it!!!

I too have similar issues with the external tuners.

Mine is plugged directly into the back of the V2 but every week or so it disappears, and I'll miss a '3rd' recording.

A reboot will always fix it, but I'm wondering why is it crashing?

How do you leave your V2 when not in use? Do you leave it running, In standby, or do you shut it down?

A reboot will always fix it,

Does a GUI restart fix it, or only a reboot?
I wonder if it's a driver crash of some sort (thus, only fixable by a reboot).

Haven't tried a GUI restart, but will happily give this a go if it happens again.

Also, I've discovered the USB extension cable that's included with the V2 box, so I've put that inline with the tuner for the first time. Up till now I had the tuner unit plugged directly into the back of the V2 - Don't know if that's part of the problem, but I'll use the extender from here on.

Thanks for the help so far.

I find I lose the dual tuner on a restart (detected, but doesn't tune), need to reboot to get it working again. I've never lost it otherwise, though.

I've submitted a fix that gets the dual USB tuner working after a restart. There still won't be any stats, though (the signal bars will be 0).
