U4 stuck on Loading... (URGENT)

Hi,

I was using my U4 just fine earlier tonight. Switched it off via the remote into standby mode as I have done heaps of times.

I then went to use U4 Browser interface & it refused to connect. I was able to browse the HDD via FTP using WinSCP and Windows Explorer no problems at all. I then tried to turn the U4 on via the remote and NOTHING.

Next I decide to turn off the U4 via the switch at the back. Waited a short while and then switched back on. I got the Beyonwiz logo on the TV screen, followed by BOOT ????? and then Loading .... and 20 mins later it hasn't progressed any further.

I couldn't hear any funny noises from the U4 before switching it off. Nothing odd happened when it was being used. The U4 recorded a number of pgms AOK earlier ... I'm 99% certain it was not recording when I switched it off.

What's gone wrong? How can I fix this?

An Update....

I switched it off again and this time also disconnected the power cord. Waited about 10 mins and then plugged it back in & switched it on .... BINGO. It's working again. IceTV timers all look OK. OpenWebif OK.

Would still like to know what went wrong ... if there is an answer. Is this an indication that the U4 has some HDW fault such as a crappy capacitor or the like ... How can I tell?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Probably time to update the FW, but lets cross 1 bridge at a time....

It sounds like the enigma2 process crashed hard. That's the bit that runs the web interface, the on screen GUI and controls recordings and whatnot. You could still access ftp because the underlying operating system was still running.

Your best bet would be to download the latest firmware, and install it onto the U4 via the USB update method. That will restore any damaged software on the U4's internal filesystem.

I'm not sure what would have caused the file corruption though. Possible the hardware is at fault, or if you have overridden the default shares or security on the U4, it could have been malware on your network.

Hmm, interesting though.
That does seem like some sort of a hardware failure then since the filesystem appears to still be intact.

Hopefully it was something transient that went wrong from a power surge, and needed the full power cycle to recover from. I don't think this one is a common or recognised fault with the U4s.

I don't remember everything I wrote but it was along these lines:

No changes to U4 or PC or Network ... not for many months.

As to malware, always a possibility I suppose but I don't see any evidence of such.

Another little update ...

Renamed some recordings, copied 'em to my PC to keep, deleted 'em on the U4 and then switched the U4 off via the remote.

OpenWebif still working !!!!!

So it looks like a 1 time hiccup & lets hope that it remains just that.

As to FW ... will update via USB method as soon as I can.

Most likely the culprit is corrupted firmware or a hardware glitch. It doesn't happen very often but when it does you will have symptoms like something that used to work is broken.

Since it came good it might even be electrical interference at play. I wouldn't worry about a rare failure.

Usually the best option is to reflash the firmware in case something has been corrupted. The current beta is quite stable so we commend it to all users. Don't panic- it's easy enough to reflash if you relax and take your time.

If something goes wrong reversion is always an option. We will help with guidance if you don't know the procedure to flash / reflash.
