T2

Post by bobrichter » Tue Jun 02, 2020 09:10

Hi. I own a T2 which is about 2/3 years old. I've just given it a refurb so to speak by reformatting the drive and installing the latest firmware.
The main reason for doing this was it's performance was was being affected by very slow response times using the remote (changing from one recorded program to another not changing channels) and tuner issues where it wasn't able to record the correct amount of programs at the one time as specified.
After performing this refurb I thought I'd had success but no! The remote response time is fine but I still have recording issues. Last evening I set it to record three (3) programs on three (3) different channels. I watched an older recorded program for about an hour (while these three recordings were in progress) then went back to watch one of the newly recorded programs (still recording) and the old problem was back! Non responsive to the remote; freezing while trying to playback. One of the programs had not recorded properly also.
My opinion (only) is it seems to be struggling to perform these recording tasks due to the wrong tuner setup or a bad processor or similar?
I've tried to find some information regarding 'tuner setup' but have had no success? Would appreciate other opinions on all of this.
ps: I installed a SSD in it about a year ago and it seems to have been ok up to now. Is it possible that may be of concern?

Thanks in advance to all that would like to help.

Bob

Its possible that the harddisk is playing up for you.

If you set a network password and log into the T2 using telnet or ssh, you can check the lock files for clues to see if it is hardware related.

You can check the messages log, and dmesg using the following commands
cat /var/log/messages
and
dmesg

You'd be looking for ATA type messges.

Also, are you running any Autotimers? Sometimes you can create bad Autotimer search rules that can tie up the T2's processor for an extended time which can make things unresponsive.

Have you tested each of the tuners in turn to make sure you are getting good signal on each one? You can set the preferred tuner, then zap to another channel to force the live view to use Tuner A, B or C as required.

I will do a test on the tuners now as you suggested.......
Sorry, in the previous message it should be 'search', my mistake.

And yes, I always run 'auto timers'.

Not sure I fully understand how to test each tuner. Do I disconnect all then connect each one, one at a time?
I also have the USB tuner connected?

There don't seem to be any SATA problems there, though I'm not sure whether the logs cover a time when you were having the lockups.

BTW: if you want to post long text files, change their name to end in .txt (e.g. messages.txt) and post them as an attachment (after editing them down to the relevant parts, if necessary).

Use the Attachments tab below the text entry box when you compose the post.

It may not be connected but updating to the latest beta firmware might be worthwhile viewtopic.php?f=56&t=14008

And switching to the beta feed straight away for updates.

I'm presuming from your posts this isn't what you meant by latest version. We really need a number/date to know for sure.

No problem. It's just a bit less clutter to post as an attachment, and often easier than copy/paste.

You have the latest official release installed. MrQuade's link is to a recent public beta version. Even that's not the most recent public neta, there's been an online beta update since that USB updated, 20200405.

When you run the beta that MrQuade linked to, you have to also follow the instructions to switch to the beta update feeds here: Switching your software feed to a live beta

Do you ever see the "spinner" appearing on screen at regular (15m) intervals?
That's a sign that you have Autotimers running amok.

MENU->Setup->Tuners->Tuner allocation

Change the "Preferred tuner" to A, save the change and return to Live TV.
Zap around a bit, and make sure Tuner A is green in the Infobar, and just make sure you are receiving a signal.

Go back and change the "Preferred tuner" to B, then save and zap around a bit. Check that B is green in the Infobar and check for picture and signal.

Repeat for Tuner C.

Does that mean that you do use AutoTimers? If so, hold back on updating the firmware. The AutoTimer issue is down to configuration of the AutoTimers, and if that's causing your problem, updating the firmware won't help.

OK! Have done the test on the tuners and this is the result:-

Tuner A: 100% signal strength.
Tuner B: 100% signal strength.
Tuner C - USB: Range from 50% to 80%. Picture breaking up badly!!
So I think I can say I will have disconnect the USB tuner based on these results?

It doesn't really matter that much normally, but "Auto" and "Disabled" should be fine.

It might be a good idea to try connecting the USB tuner to a different antenna outlet, or check its connections.

The defaults are normally fine:

Preferred tuner for recordings: Disabled

The "Disabled" setting for the recording setting just means "same as Preferred tuner setting".

AutoTimers are not necessarily a problem. However, poorly configured AutoTimers can cause lockups of the sort you describe.

Or at least what I think you are describing: that the system becomes unresponsive to the remote and the spinner shows for a time for no apparent reason.

Correct Peter, that's exactly what I mean.
So you are seeing the spinner popping up in roughly 15 minute intervals without you having immediately done anything to trigger it?

If so, then yep, its a rogue Autotimer. We can help you track it down and hopefully fix up its rules so that it doesn't bog down the T2.

It sounds like that USB tuner reception issue needs some attention too.
As you say, you could simply unplug it to avoid it getting used, or check into the antenna connection to see if it can be fixed and you can keep your three tuners :)

While you are hunting down possible causes of issues, do not forget to replace the batteries in the remote handset. Fresh, good quality alkalines are a cheap option. If you are going to use rechargeable batteries, you must use low self-discharge batteries, such as Eneloops.

Grab a copy of the file /etc/enigma2/autotimer.xml from your T2 and attach it here. Then we can take a squiz and see if anything stands out.
You can use File Commander to copy it to a USB thumb drive.
Look here and further down in that topic for retrieval examples.

How many programs can be recorded at any one time with the T2? That's without the optional USB tuner!
Now that I've removed the USB tuner I'm trying to record three programs on different channels and they all start at 7:30pm.
Is this possible with the T2 without the USB tuner? It not letting me do this. I have preferred tuner set at A and preferred tuner for recording disabled.

With two tuners you can only tune to (watch live TV/record from) two different broadcasters at the same time.

A number of us have replaced the standard USB tuner with a Bluey or Blacky tuner as it has superior reception. See this thread for a discussion but ignore the dead Ebay link.

A similar unit is being offered here.

Are you sure you use autotimers, and not just normal timers?

All that you have is one timer defined in that "timers.xml" file, and it was not created by an Autotimer.

What I do is I select a TV program from the EPG and hit the 'green' button on the remote twice to set a recording. Sometimes I use the 'record' button on the remote which ends up achieving the same thing. All of these are for programs for later, they're not 'instant' recordings.
Sometimes if that particular show is on like three nights in a row I go into the timers section and select to record 'user defined' and then flick those little switches to activate the nights that the show is on.
So, is that what auto-timers are? Probably not! :D

All that you have is one timer defined in that "timers.xml" file, ...
Actually two timers -
House Rules: High Stakes
The Voice
Both set for tonight.

Yep, so those are just "timers".

An "Autotimer" is more or a rule that you can program in the Wiz. It will regularly search the EPG (every 15 or 20 minutes), and look for particular words that you program in. It will then set timers on your behalf so you don't have to do it yourself, hence the "auto" part.

So for instance, I have an Autotimer set up that looks for the words "doctor who" and searches the "ABC HD" channel for any mention of doctor who in the program title.

Anyway, since you don't have any Autotimers, then these will not be the source of your spinner slowdowns.

To add to what MrQuade posted:

You don't seem to even be taking advantage of what ordinary timers can do: like most VCR timers, they can be set up to record at the same times weekly, daily, on weekdays, or on other day patterns that you specify (like weekends).

MrQuade and Peter. Thank you for all your efforts helping me with this.Much appreciated.
I'm sorry to disappoint in my VCR skills. I'll try and do better from now on.
I have other skills though like I'm a website developer/builder and a licenced drone pilot so you can't be good at everything. :)
Thanks again guys.
Regards
Bob

I watched an older recorded program for about an hour (while these three recordings were in progress) then went back to watch one of the newly recorded programs (still recording) and the old problem was back! Non responsive to the remote; freezing while trying to playback.

Do use the WizOS app on a phone/tablet to stream/control the T2? Often that'll give rise to the spinner.

Anything else that his the Wiz's Web Interface will load it down too.
I have found that running the VU+ plugin under Kodi to connect to my T3 will lead to a spinner briefly popping up whenever Kodi refreshes its EPG.

It's ok, no need to apologise, and apologies if it sounded like we were being harsh, it wasn't intentional.
We like to help, and there are a heap of features on the Wiz that you might like to discover :)

As-per the earlier mention my prl though. Perhaps it might be worth waiting until you encounter these slowdowns again, and then send us a new copy of the /var/log/messages file. The one you sent before looked like it was taken pretty soon after a reboot (the messages file only goes back as far as the last time the Wiz booted up).

No offence taken guys - not at all. Harshness never entered my mind. I was just glad I could find someone with the knowledge to be able to help.
That's a good idea. If it occurs again at least I know what to do thanks to you guys.
