New barebones T2 - 'beeping' from HD

Post by arodc » Thu Sep 27, 2018 23:47

I've just received my barebones T2 and have installed a Seagate 1TB HD.

As soon as I turned the box on I heard a persistent 'beeping' sound from the HD. It is about one beep per second. The box still turned on and I was able to perform the software update and watch live TV. I did not try recording anything.

I have since tried remounting the HD but have the same beeping issues. For what it's worth, I have a photo of the install below.

Is there anything I may have done wrong or have I got a faulty Seagate HD?

Thanks

Picture was not attached.

Presumably you actually installed a 1TB drive, not 1GB.

Beeping sound from HDD usually means that it is dead. Most often, it's the sound of the drive trying to correctly locate heads on the platter and failing. In other words, the most likely answer is that your drive has suffered mechanical damage and needs to be replaced.

It is possible that you have done something wrong, or it may have been bad luck or someone else mishandling the drive. In general, the things to watch out for are screws that are too long and touching / putting pressure on the top surface of the drive.
