T4 Crashed

Post by banhambo » Fri Jul 10, 2020 16:37

Running firmware : beyonwiz 19.3.20191106 (19.3-273-g6f501ae)
Kernal/Drivers : 3.14.2 / 20180416

I came in this morning and the T4 was still on, so I used the front panel to shut down the unit.
Using my harmony elite I then turned on the T4 (and TV and AVR).
The screen was black but I could hear the sound from the channel.
I thought that the TV was not on but it would not turn on so I shut the whole lot down and restarted.
During the restart I noted that the TV WAS on but still displaying nothing.
I had sound from the TV station.
Pressing the menu button brought up the Beyonwiz menu, so I attempted a restart.
The screen flashed with some text information I almost had a chance to read and mentioned a crash log (or similar)
This hung during the restart with the front panel blank.
I powered down the T4 then restarted again.
The T4 came back up fine.

None of the recordings for last night were recorded.

Looking in the \Logs directory all I can find are two files:
console.txt and enigma2_execution.log (attached)
Neither looks like it contains anything interesting.

Is there anywhere else I should be looking?

I have performed a verification on the HDD which returned no errors.

What other information can I provide to help determine why the system crashed?

Thanks all for your help.

enigma2_execution.log shows that the T4 was started on 3 Jul at 19:34 (it looks like it was rebooted the: it was shut down normally at 19:33), but it didn't terminate normally. It was next started on 10 Jul at 05:53, which is presumably just after you powered it down this morning. There's pretty minimal information in the execution log. The more informative debug logs are only there if you have debug logging enabled.

console.txt just shows the last time you ran a program from inside the UI. It's a settings backup log that was run at 06:46, but it's undated, and most likely not relevant to the crash. The only way to find out what date it was would be to look at the modification time on the file, proviided it hasn't been over-written in the meantime (it only shows the most recent program run).

Have you had the voltage regulators near the tuners on the T4 motherboard looked at and fixed up? They are a potential source of a number of hardware problems on the T4, including, but not exclusively, pairs of tuners stopping working.

Thanks Peter,

The console.log was last timestamped at 06:46 on April 10.

My T4 has never been touched so it is possibly the voltage regulators.
I have not had any issues with the tuners and this is one of the last batch of T4s so not sure if they are better/worse.

I might dust off my old T3 and give Warkus a call to get my T4 sorted if this keeps up.

Would it be worth going for a USB flash and perhaps taking the latest beta firmware?

I have also enabled debug logs.

It could be a firmware corruption problem, so a re-flash might help, and yes, you could bring the firmware up to date at the same time.

The regulator issue doesn't only cause tuner problems. It caused my T4 to go straight from running perfectly to bricked, so since you haven't had it looked at, checking with Warkus is probably a good idea.

Thanks again Peter.

I will update the firmware, and take some photos to start and go from there.
Warkus fixed up my old T3 after I got the T4 so it should have a little bit left in it. Just been sitting in storage for the day the T4 has issues, so I will drag it out and get it up to speed as well.

I have been holding out for a v4 or similar, but really like the T4, I hope it is just a 'random' failure.

Again, thanks for you help and guidance, much appreciated.

I like the T4, too. The V2 is faster, but I like the built-in tuners and HDD on the T4.

Even though the T4 can not decode HEVC or deal with 4k and there is the issue with the voltage regulators/heatsinks for the tuners, it's still easily the best PVR that was ever sold under the Beyonwiz brand. This is largely due to the maturity of the underlying Broadcom design, which was effectively the last generation based on the MIPS core. When Broadcom transitioned to ARM, they took a small step backwards and as a result the platform that the U4 is built on is not as polished.

I strongly recommend taking good care of your T4 and having it repaired by Warkus at the first sign of trouble. I have a T4 with a dead tuner and run it with the tuner disabled through software in preference to replacing the T4 with any other model.
