How Hot

Post by Videonut » Thu Mar 26, 2020 14:21

From the day I got my T2 and placed my hand on top of the unit it seemed quite hot, hotter than any other PVR's I've had.

I put my hand on it today and it seemed even hotter as did the USB stick in front slot. Just how hot is normal? The unit is in a cabinet under TV but has quite a lot of space surrounding it. Should I be concerned?

The internal tuners on the T2 do run quite warm. There was a topic on the forum discussing how hot parts of the T2 ran & I think I may have even posted my temperature measurements in that topic (unless I’m getting mixed up with my DP-S1 temperature measurements). A search should find that topic (unless Grumpy_Geoff can post the link from his data-base :) ). If that topic does contain temperature measurements you could compare those with measurements from your T2. Edit: Follow the link in Grumpy_Geoff’s post below.[/edit]

Our T2 is packed away for when we travel, so I can’t readily check any temperatures for you.

When you say plenty of space surrounding the T2, does it have any natural flow through ventilation? For example can plenty of air flow from the front of the cabinet below the level of the T2, flow through the T2 from the bottom to the top, then that warm air flow out the rear of the cabinet well above the T2. If you don’t have something like this I would recommend either modifying the cabinet or taking the T2 out of the cabinet.

Just a note too, that any USB stick that is left plugged in for any length of time will get quite toasty no matter what it is plugged into.

Really? I have a USB plugged into my computer all day and it's cool to the touch.
Cheers

Maybe it just the higher speed ones? I know the ones I have in my Shield, and the ones I use to transfer files at work get pretty damn hot.

Not sure as this one is a SanDisk Extreme USB3 so I would have thought it would fit that definition.

Is it still doing its job successfully?

Yes, it is still working fine, even after the summer we just had here in Brissie.
I never got around to finding a new home for it so it's still in the same spot. I have no aircon and my workroom/sauna ranged between 30-36 deg day and night for 2 months or thereabouts and the T2 soldiered on.

That’s good to know. Umart still have stock, but the price is now $20, which still seems reasonable to me.
