OK, copied over to the NAS a 4.2GB 108min file, 155 files in total, plays back via the Wiz. I don't trim my files on the Wiz, I use VideoReDo and save the final edit.

Does anyone have want to add a NAS drive to the list?

Post by dg » Mon Nov 03, 2008 20:31

Hi All,

I am looking to update this thread on NAS drive compatability. I'm particularly interested if you have experience with a NAS drive not listed in this thread or you have a different experience than what is stated for a listed NAS drive.

In your response please include:
1.) Compatible / Incompatible
2.) Make and Model
3.) Size (GB)
4.) Connection used - USB/ Ethernet include make and model of switch/router

If compatible then also include:
5.) Disk/Fan Noise
6.) Transfer speed (MB/sec) Copy and WizFX.
7.) Ease of set up.
8.) Other features - e.g. Usefulness with other networked computers.

If incompatible then also include:
9.) Problems experienced.
10.) If you don't want to repost all of your details then it would be useful if you could just drop a post in this thread with Model number and a link to post in other thread where your problem was discussed without success.

Thanks,
DG

Post by steve5 » Tue Jan 27, 2009 12:53

Myer are selling this with the HDD for $179.

Hi Steve,

The Buffalo DriveStation TurboUSB (500GB) is not really a NAS drive.
Its a USB Drive.

It would be better if you posted your question here http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=2983

Here is my submission for a Thecus N5200PRO

1.) Compatible
2.) Thecus N5200PRO Dual gBit LAN -(4 port GBit Router version available)
3.) 5 x 500Gb Samsung HD501LJ configured RAID5. Will upgrade to 1.5Tb drives next year probably reconfigure to 4 x 1.5Tb RAID5 plus hot spare.
4.) Running over Gbit LAN using both LAN ports on N5200 with link aggregation

5.) Very quiet in operation, not located adjacent to BWiz and TV but wouldn't be a problem noisewise.
6.) Transfer speeds are good. Can stream any content including ripped DVDs to BWiz without problems.
7.) Excellent set-up and management. Supports multiple user accounts, access control lists and even Active Directory.
8.) USB drive caching facility. Additional eSATA port. Provides for onboard modules such as webserver, Azureus bittorrent, media server.
Also provides for multiple iSCSI targets

.280 Firmware.

As I noted in a post in another NAS topic, Video DVDs are only 10.55Mb/s or 1.35MB/s, and hardly a demanding test of the ability of a NAS to support streaming. Australian HDTV (~15Mb/s or 2MB/s) is more demanding. If you want to support multiple streams, then NAS performance may become an issue.

I get over 3 MB/s for BWiz copy activities to the NAS. I haven't guaged streaming speeds from the NAS but would expect similar or better.

Write speeds from Windows to the NAS is 40MB/s.

Yep. The 3MB/s to/from the Beyonwiz is a limitation at the Beyonwiz end. The NAS itself sounds plenty fast enough :)

I have this setup and the Bwiz does not see it, although it sees the PCs on my network. Is it necessary to do anything to either the Bwiz or the NAS to make it visible? Or is it meant to "just work"?

There is a bunch of tutorials on how to get Windows networking working. You need to get a username/password setup in the Wiz, and the same for the network box.

Hi everyone

I am thinking of getting a NAS for my Beyonwiz P2 & H1 so I can give the PC a break. I'm a little confused and need some advice.

I would like a NAS that can support say 4-5 HHD's I have no linux experience so something easy to use :)

A torrent client would be good I currently use Vuse and note that some can run Vuse but from what I've read it requires Linux knowledge which as above I don't have any.

Any suggestions. I'm really confused and don't want to make an expensive mistake.

Oh, and print server would be a bonus too.

Have you tried looking at the list of compatible NAS devices listed in the first post of this thread? Most of the units listed there are appliance type devices that offer most, if not all, the features you require with little need for Linux or any sort of advanced computer knowledge..

Regards,
Ian.

I have a QNAP 409 and I would recommend this unit to anybody. It's simple and easy to setup.

No one has said it is not to ask, Ian was just checking if you had looked through that info first.

Just give people time to respond.

Hi Raid

That sounds great and if you say it's easy to use I'm leaning this way. One thing. Can I take a NTFS 1TB drive I use for storage in my PC and transfer it straight to the NAS, no formatting required?

From what I understand, no. I purchased 4 x 1.5TB Seagate drives and copied the data across.

Hi Trial_Master,

As my posts earlier in this thread attest, I am a fan of the ReadyNAS devices. There are many newer models both bigger and smaller than the ReadyNAS NV+ I have. (I also now have a ReadyNAS Duo.) Newer firmware now also integrates a bittorrent client and larger drive capacities. Have a look at the links in my original recommendation.

Ian.

Thanks Ian I was just looking at the Netgear site funny about that!! In relation to the Bittorrent client can you schedule and throttle downloads. Having trouble finding a manual to read through on Netgear site.

I'll have a look at your earlier posts on the ReadyNAS. They are more expensive but seem very popular.

Hi Trial_Master,

The newer versions of the ReadyNAS are very expensive. They have moved to an Intel processor and they are now rated as some of the fastest NASs around. Any of the older and cheaper models would be fine as a media server.

I don't use the bittorrent client but there are definitely throttling options, I didn't see any options for scheduling.

Ian.

The ReadyNAS NV+ and ReadyNAS Duo are still available and based on the older processor. The ReadyNAS NVX is brand new (not yet shipping) and should replace the ReadyNAS NV+. It is based on the new Intel processor but is thought to be about the same price.

What processor is fast enough?

Post by wappinghigh » Wed May 13, 2009 20:39

Hi again guys..

I'm up and running streaming files all around the house...cool!

Basically I have a Cat6 Apple gigabit network. Both the H1 and DP 2 wizes have no problems whatsoever playing MKV files (of the 2-3GB size) off my new Imac. But this has considerable grunt.

They struggle playing files off my (older less capable) NAS. It's a Buffalo Linkstation HS DH500. Basically streaming is staggered/jumpy. This NAS handles AAC audio streaming to my Sonos fine, but can't handle the video.

I've read the "compatible" NAS list, but how "compatible" are they: in particular, do they have enough "grunt"? So my question is what specs are required in a NAS to handle these MKV files properly? 1/ gigabit essential? 2/ What processor? 4/ Faster harddrives? 4/ Any specific model recommendations from anyone who is doing what I plan to do?

Beyonwiz ROCKS! :P

The compatibility list only lists NAS devices as compatible if they can be seen by and accessed by the wiz.

I'm successfully streaming to 2 (hopefully 3 soon!) Wiz's off my Imac with no stutter or sound probs at all. It's real impressive, so I can't go back to a NAS that won't cut it!

Who needs a matrix switch?...Yesterdays' technology.

Needless to say Dave, I'm VERY happy with my decision to go Beyonwiz :D

I can confirm a QNAP TS-239 is compatible, both with the stable and the beta (v3.1) QNAP firmware. It actually works better than the QNAP TS-101 as it wakes fast enough for the impatient P1 not to initially timeout when accessing it.

I can also confirm the TS-239 is a terrifc NAS, extremely fast and packed with features (as it should be for a $700 NAS).

500Mhz/128Gb RAM would be fine. Unfortuantely you bought a slow & outdated model NAS.

My HTML Tags Are Not Working.....

Post by dg » Sun Jun 28, 2009 07:46

HI Administrators,

My tags to set HTML links, in the first post, don't seem to be working.
When I update my post I see the status of "HTML Off" .
I checked my profile and I have them set to on.

I checked the FAQ and I see "Can I use HTML?
That depends on whether the administrator allows you to; they have complete control over it. If you are allowed to use it, you will probably find only certain tags work. This is a safety feature to prevent people from abusing the board by using tags which may destroy the layout or cause other problems. If HTML is enabled you can disable it on a per post basis from the posting form."

They once worked. Am I doing something wrong or have my permissions been altered ?

No idea but I went and tried a few things and removing the tags from the link to the minimum specs you just added seems to have fixed it.

Maybe it didn't like something about it but regardless you have clickable links again.

To complete the picture

1.) Compatible
2.) QNAP TS-239
3.) Size (GB): 1.5Tb
4.) Ethernet, connected to netgear gigabit switch (GS506?)

If compatible then also include:
5.) Disk/Fan Noise (quiet fan, moderate seek noise form WD green drive)

MY NAS Collection

Post by wayne7497 » Sat Nov 21, 2009 22:37

I have the following Nas boxes (AND YES I aint lying photos available for the doubters)

I can confirm the Beyonwiz sees and streams all of them.

I use a wired network my entire house is cables with Cat6 back yo my rack through a Netgear gigabit 48 port switch.

THECUS

N7700 X 7 1TB (1of them)
An Exceptional NAS ( i have an 8800 on order for the rack)
Louder than avg fan noise buy not annoying
Tranfer speed never transferred from a beyonwiz but through the server 65-85000kbs
Exceptionally easy to use..
Running RAID 5
These can be bought now for round $1200
Also have 2 e-sata ports at rear and usb as well as iscsi, torrent, and a myriad of other add ons...
Had 1 drive die, dropped ina replacemen streamed and watched 2 movies whilst it did a rebuild and never slowed at all and never lost a file... IT really is the best nas Ive owned...

N5200BR PRO x 5 1TB (6 of them)
Same as N7700 Transfer speeds around 55000

N5200BR x 5 1TB (2 of them)
N5200B x 5 1TB (4 of them)
Same as the rest transfer speed slower thats all

N4100+ x 4 1TB (1 of them)
N4100 x 4 1TB (1 of them)
Good for streaming slow transfers little support due to age now.

NETGEAR/INFRANT

X600 4 x 1TB (1 of them my 1st NAS)
Briliant device not as advanced as the Thecus but dam reliable and fast
NV + 4 x 1TB (1 of them)

Vantec NexStar 475LX Ultra NAS Works with DP-S1

Post by dingram17 » Sat Jan 09, 2010 11:11

I'm not sure if it is due to a revision of the NexStar or the firmware in the DP-S1, but I am able to stream from the NexStar LX Ultra (http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/403). The NAS also supports USB and eSATA connections as well as the gigabit ethernet.

I picked one of these up locally and put a 1TB Seagate 7200rpm SATA drive in it and it runs nicely. All I need was for the user name and password to be set in the S1, clear the old PC list and rescan.

I've had lots of problems trying to get WiFi working, so I bit the bullet and now use a Netgear WG602v4 as a bridge. The WG602 cost $85 and the LX Ultra cost $140. I use WPA2 for security at home and the S1 never managed to use it properly -- a shame that I've had to go with the bridge when WiFi is built in, but this works so much better.

FYI. Netgear DGN3500 rangemax works fine as a nas.
also a good all in one modem router.

What about this NAS?

Post by baobab68 » Wed Aug 18, 2010 22:06

I am considering buying one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Network-Storage- ... 0364wt_993

and wondering if Samba is enough for the BW to be able to connect to the device. I have a couple of external drives, including one that the BW won't see when plugged in directly, so I thought a device like the one above might work.

One drive is powered, one isn't. They'll be powered by the NAS though, not by the BW. The BW is on the network, I already connect to my Windows 7 PC's with no problem.

The device I'm proposing is an el cheapo NAS, did you take a look at the link? I am wondering if people think it will do a good enough job pretending to be a Windows box, so that the BW can see it?

Samba on OS X does, so why not?

i'm guessing that the non powered drive is not seen by the wiz

I would recommend a Qnap TS-210
if you have a lot of video/music and more than one pc/user, ps3
has print server, BT downloader, Tonkymedia server, etc
and can have up to 4tb of storage
Great bit of kit

that device is a lot cheaper, nothing lost
it my do the job

I didn't see anything on that eBay page that makes me think the device won't work. At the price it won't be an expensive mistake if you do have issues.

Ian.

Yes, a Samba server works a lot better than a real Windows server.

Seems like it's worth a try then. Thanks for your input guys.

And yes Gra you're right: the unpowered drive is the one that does not work with the BW directly, even if I power it independently.
