1) Compatible
2) Maxtor Shared Storage II

http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/MSS_II/

If compatible then also
3) 500 (GB) (also avail in 1TB)
4) Ethernet and USB. Will accept USB keys and further USB HDs as well
5) Disk/Fan Noise is present, but will fade into the background when playing media.
6) Transfer speed (7-8 MB/sec)
7) Ease of set up is good. Very professional and straight forward UI.

Other comments

a.Neat case with stylish presentation for those who may decide to have it in a 'viewed' area.
b.Power standby mode works well and duration to time-out is selectable
c.Permissions menu basic, but works well for BW setup.

Officeworks special at $329. Yes I'm sure there are cheaper places, but do they come with a seven day money back guarantee, no questions asked? Great if you want to make absolutely sure that the unit is right for you.

Nice job too. BTW I took the liberty of editing your first post a bit to make 'more worthy' of being a stickie, IMHO. I just added a splash of colour etc.

Later I will delete all the 'thanks' and 'ok' and ':)' posts to trim this thread back to only informative posts (including deleting this post). Unless the OP's beat me to it and delete their own posts.

This is a feature of gigabit networks and as such does not apply to the Beyonwiz (which is 100 Mbps max). If a future Beyonwiz gets a gigabit network interface then your suggestion could be reconsidered. ;)

Hi DG,

Can you please update the ReadyNAS entry...

Up to 4 x 1TB disks are now supported by the latest firmware update.

Also, all supplies of this NAS should now be under the Netgear banner. The device is now sold as the "Netgear ReadyNAS NV+". Only second hand or old stock will be sold under the Infrant banner.

Regards,
Ian.

I have just purchased a Dlink DNS-323 with 2x Samsung 500G SATAII drives, formatted raid1, and I have to say I am very happy.

The Beyonwiz sees the NAS, (at this stage I do not have authenticated users), and I am streaming music/video over wireless 802.11g with *so far* no glitches.

My hardware configuration consists of a wireless bridge in the lounge which connects to the LAN port of the BW.
The NAS plugs straight into a GIgE LAN port on my Linksys wireless router,

For wired file transfer rates (LAN), I am seeing around 18MBps between my Vista box and the NAS, (both GigE) and for WLAN, I am seeing around 5MBps.

Cheers

Well... Just tried some HD content, (1080), and I guess as expected, wireless just doesnt cut it.. looks like I have to get some Cat5E cabling between my computer room and my Lounge..

NAS Drive Compatability Update

Post by dg » Wed Mar 05, 2008 06:24

Hi All,

I am looking to update this thread on NAS drive compatability. I'm particularly interested if you have experience with a NAS drive not listed in this thread or you have a different experience than what is stated for a listed NAS drive.

In your response please include:
1.) Compatible / Incompatible
2.) Make and Model
3.) Size (GB)
4.) Connection used - USB/ Ethernet include make and model of switch/router

If compatible then also include:
5.) Disk/Fan Noise
6.) Transfer speed (MB/sec) Copy and WizFX.
7.) Ease of set up.
8.) Other features - e.g. Usefulness with other networked computers.

If incompatible then also include:
9.) Problems experienced.
10.) If you don't want to repost all of your details then it would be useful if you could just drop a post in this thread with Model number and a link to post in other thread where your problem was discussed without success.

Thanks,
DG

I can report that a QNAP TS-409 works fine with the Wiz. 3*500GB drives in RAID5 configuration.

Also runs ftpd-topfield and PVRweb (still alpha I'm sorry).

And Linksys NSLU2 with both stock f/w and Unslung (well, I haven't tried stock f/w, but unslung is pretty much stock when it comes to the Samba side of things anyway).
All with a reasonably simple web config (I can't understand how these multi-$$$ boxes can get it so wrong when the relatively cheap Linksys box simply sets up Samba the way it was meant to be).

Works with QNAP TS-109, 1TB WD Green Power HDD, via ethernet.
NAS is fanless.
The Green power drive is one of the quietest spinning hard drives I've ever heard (or more correctly not heard..), and softish seek noise.
Also connected to 3x PC and 1x mediagate 350HD on the network.

Aren't these drives slower spinning (slower access) to get the quieter profile?

Given the high data density, these drives are fast enough at slower rotational speeds. When you take into consideration the power consumption, acoustics and heat generated, these drives are quite simply brilliant. I just hope that their reliability will be good.

I thought I read that these new drives are better in power, heat and noise only. Data, access speeds and performance I thought were down. I could be wrong as I don't follow WD very much any more.

Given the WD name and the recent WD history I would not be holding out for high reliability. :(

Whilst advertised as '7200 RPM' class drives, the green power drives are set at 5400 RPM.

As for access speed and performance, I note no difference in real life on a home network in it's role as a media file server. (vs the PCs Samsung 7200 RPM 200 GB, and 74GB 10000 RPM Raptor on the same network)

I personally consider the running cost / heat / acoustic profile to be more benificial.
Also, it was one of the cheapest 1TB HDDs @ $270. 8)

Hi,

Have extensively tested Microsoft Home server with Beyonwiz

Good performance and interoperability at NAS level.

Some opportunity to incorporate additional features such as automatic backup of BW files.

DP-P1 working with D-LINK DNS-313 Network Storage Enclosure, Samsung 250Gb 7200RPM Serial ATA-II-300 HDD with 8Mb Cache (model HD250HJ).

- PVR and NAS connected via cat 5 cable to D-LINK G-604T ADSL Router.
- No noticeable fan/HDD noise (located next to PVR/TV).
- NAS also serves files to other network PC's.

Supplied "one-click" configuration software would not find device from main pc (wireless connection). Laptop PC connected to router via cat 5 cable permitted mandatory NAS config/HDD formatting. NAS then available to all devices on network.

ymmv...

I am also quite looking forward to the ReadyNAS Pro. I believe that it will also be fully compatible with the Beyonwiz as it will use the same operating firmware.

I see there's a very favourable review of the Synology DS508 now on smallnetbuilder, I wonder how much and how long we have to wait here in Aus to get hold of one

I had one of the Infrant/Netgear X6 boxes a short time ago, very nice unit but very noisy, and I don't feel that they've got the firmware bullet proof yet (my opinion based on the ReadyNAS forum)

Has anybody tried the WD MyBook World Edition or MyBook World Edition II packages? Sound like they should work, easier to find and price looks comparable.

Meant to add this a while ago.

1. Compatible
2. QNAP TS-101 running a WD GreenPower 1TB drive
3. USB expandable via eSATA to 2TB (ie, add another terabyte)
4. NAS connected to P1 via cat5 going through a really cheap 8 port TP-Link switch which in turn has an ASUS wireless bridge plugged in. That gets the NAS and P1 onto the wireless network for access by a couple of other machines.
5. Noise. None that I have ever noticed. The NAS itself is fanless and the drive has some fancy-pants process where the disc only spins up when needed. Anyway, it's as good as silent.
6. Haven't done any xfer speed tests, but not a problem streaming HD content.
7. Ease of setup...well, if I can get it going then it MUST be simple. All done via a web interface and wizard. It was a snap.
8. Other features. Has its own ftp/web server, can do torrent downloads and a heap of other stuff that I haven't looked at. It's all on the web site. Seems to work very well. All devices on the network are able to see and access it. So far very happy indeed.

Please include:
1.) Compatible
2.) WD MyBook World Edition II
3.) 1TB (902GB)
4.) Ethernet w/ Netgear Wireless Router

If compatible then also include:
5.) No noise that I can hear, a little HDD spin/seek noise, but with TV sound on, no problems.
6.) ???
7.) Came setup out of the box basically. Very easy (did NOT install any of the WD software, just using the drive as is).
8.) Working fine with my wireless laptop & deskop and the BW. Will test with X360 tomorrow.

Steer clear of the Netcomm NP3680 Multi server.

it works with windows pc....but NOT BW :(

Waste of money.

Chatted with Netcomm via email..and they really don't care.

N2100 NAS unit raid setup.

Post by technoboffin » Wed Aug 06, 2008 19:42

Guys,

this is my first raid 1 setup and I was wondering how long this unit takes to set up the two drives.

They are two 1T Samsung drives....

Its been going for over an hour and its still not ready to use.

The drives are recognised by the unit.

EDIT:

done finally....after about 4 hours.

And now to add some files.

Synology DS508

Post by macca » Sat Aug 23, 2008 15:21

1) Compatible
2) Synology DS508
3) 5 x Seagate 1TB SATA II ST31000340AS HDDs
4) Connection used - Gigabit ethernet Cat5e network with Netgear GS116 and GS108 gigabit switches
5) Disk/Fan Noise - a bit loud for sitting under the TV
6) Transfer speed (MB/sec) Copy and WizFX - not sure of how to measure, but seems pretty quick (I'm currently copying all my XviD files up to it)
7) Very easy to set up once the RAID set was built (7hrs in total)
8) Other features - can be seen from all the other computers on the network as well as the Wiz

Now I've got it going I probably don't need to upsize the disk in the Wiz.

Choice :)

5 x 1 TB drives! That's some pimped out NAS 8)

I have 2 1 TB's (Samsung's - Xraid redundant array) in my NV + and am considering putting in another, but it would be a while away before I go the 4th..

Out of interest. When you get change copy a .ts wizzy file over to the NAS and then try to play it back later via the network. Let me know of your experience.

Well, I was waiting for the 1.5TB HDDs but no one can tell me when they'll land in Oz or how much, I picked up the 1TB Seagates last weekend in Sydney city for $179 each

According to mwave the Seagate 1.5TB drives will sell for $367.40. See here. I was browsing their site the other day when considering my third 1TB sammy and notice this listing.

yes, but the Aussie importer still doesn't have an availability date for those babies, and at almost twice the price of the 1TB disks...well, I thought why not.

My thoughts exactly. Even better when those are released logic would dictate that there should be a price drop on the 1 TB's from most manufacturers.....Come to think of it, I may *just* have a reason to get 2 more drives real soon.. :)

edit: Does your NAS report the temp's of the drives. If so, what sort of temp's are you getting for the drives and/or NAS unit?

Sure does, I can't work out how to attach an image, so...

System temperature:39 deg C / 102 deg F

Disk 1: 33 deg C / 91 deg F 931.51GB Normal
Disk 2: 32 deg C / 90 deg F 931.51GB Normal
Disk 3: 32 deg C / 90 deg F 931.51GB Normal
Disk 4: 33 deg C / 91 deg F 931.51GB Normal
Disk 5: 34 deg C / 93 deg F 931.51GB Normal

It's working overtime ATM I've got about 2TB to copy up to it :)

Nice temps. I have been reading reports (on Readynas forum) that the seagate's run quite bit hotter than what your reporting. Some people, with 4 drives in place are reporting disk temp's in 50c + in what I understand to be reasonable ambient temp's.

Your temp's a similar to mine - I get between 25-30c so far. I expect them to get hotter when summer comes around though..

Sorry it took so long, TV is on Olympics ATM

Copied a file (recorded on the Wiz) over to the DS508, then played it back from the Wiz.

No problem, could even delete it off the NAS from the Wiz.

Sweet.

No problem at all, I wasn't expect a reply today.

Nice that it worked for you. Couple of questions:
1. The file was trimmed anyway before you transferred it?
2. How did you transfer it?
3. if not using the Wizzy's menu, what format did you use .ts or tvwiz?

The reason I ask I getting mixed results, and I ttrying to nut out what the issue is. I thinking at this stage it is me doing point one above then transferring it. I might try an unedited file t'mow and see what results I get with that.

cheers

1. no trimming, raw file as recorded on the Wiz
2. transferred using the Wiz Copy function
3. it was a twiz format

hope that helps, however it was a smallish file (from memory), I'll try a larger one (say movie length) when I get a chance

Ok thanks for that. I dont have problems/issues doing the way you described. I'm getting mixed results from (I think) trimmed files that have been copied over in the .ts format via my Mac.

OK, copied over to the NAS a 4.2GB 108min file, 155 files in total, plays back via the Wiz. I don't trim my files on the Wiz, I use VideoReDo and save the final edit.
