Timeout for shutdown warning when timeshifting

Post by stevebow » Fri Aug 09, 2019 14:54

I use a Harmony 650 remote to control the T4 and TV, so when I power off both the TV and T4 are turned off. The TV turns off immediately, so any windows the T4 may put up won't be seen.

I frequently get caught out when I am timeshifting and turn off via the Harmony. When turning off the T4, a window will open with the message "You seem to be in timeshift or saving timeshift! Really shutdown timeshift now?", waiting for a response, which won't be seen as the TV is already off.

Would it be possible to add a countdown timer to accept the hilighted "yes" option please? It could use the same timer variable for the warning when a recording is in progress (default 10 secs?) or even the timer variable for the warning when the T4 has been woken for a recording via a timer to standby, you turn it on and the T4 tries to turn off after the recording is finished. I think that timeout is 150 secs?

Anyway, I find the T4 is frequently accidentally left on over night because of this, waiting for a confirmation from me that never comes.

You could always just program a macro into the "off" command for your T4 device into your Harmony that would automatically select yes after pressing POWER. Those keypresses wouldn't harm the process of switching off.

Is switching the warning off an acceptable workaround? (MENU>Setup>TV>Timeshift>Show warning when timeshift is stopped)

That's what I do. Though my usage means that timeshift is only ever used as an emergency feature and I can't think of a case where I would care that timeshift was lost on an "accidental" zap.

Hi,

Does your TV respond to HDMI-CEC? If so you can use the T4 to turn off/on the TV.

Thanks prl, wasn't aware that warning could be disabled, that's what I'll do.

Likewise, if I change channels I'm not bothered if I lose the timeshift.

Though that doesn't mean that your suggestion isn't a good idea, anyway.

I use a Harmony 650 remote to control the T4 and TV, so when I power off both the TV and T4 are turned off. The TV turns off immediately, so any windows the T4 may put up won't be seen.

Anyway, I find the T4 is frequently accidentally left on over night because of this, waiting for a confirmation from me that never comes.
If his TV isn't turned off by the remote, then he will see any messages on the T4, which won't turn off until the message is cleared.

Ahh, I see. That's only a partial solution however, since it would require further user intervention to fix. And beside that, with a Harmony remote it would be a slight pain in the proverbial since the remote would have left the "Watch T4" activity, so to regain control, extra fiddling is required.

True in this case, but there may be other times that another message could cause the same problem.

It will also prevent the Harmony getting out of sync. Which used to happen to me, and to prevent that happening to my wife, I don't allow any of our remotes to turn secondary devices on/off. Saves those late night "service calls" from another room. :)
