In what order do folders sort then? Based on the dates etc. of the files within the folder?
If you select sort by name then by date, the directories are sorted by name. The sorting by date only gets applied to recordings however the recordings will still be first sorted by name as well.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. If you use the default sort order of recordings by date, other media by name, how are folders sorted? Based on the dates of recordings inside them?

No, based on the last time a directory was modified. That includes the deletion of a file from the directory.

I sort using 'Recordings by date, other media by name'. The folders are sorted by descending folder date (and recordings by descending date of course). Folders are listed before recordings. I also use the Series2Folder plugin, so when it has moved a recording to its folder, the folder will be sorted towards the top (indicating to me that there's something new). Custom location (regular or AutoTimer) timers sent to a folder are similar.

Thanks again guys. I clearly haven’t put much thought into sort orders before. I should be able to come up with something that suits, and will also try the plugin.

Yes, but you'll need to redo your setup manually. Don't restore settings when you update (you may not be offered the opportunity anyway, but if you are, don't).

At this stage it might make more sense to go for 19.3 20190712 as the 17.5 series firmware is no longer being developed.

Maybe, but the OP is planning to upgrade to the most recent official release.

Thank you both for your prompt reply.

I guess that if 17.5 is a dead end I'd be happier with going with the slightly earlier one. Would I miss much?

Thanks again.

I'm not sure what you mean by slightly earlier one in this case? You are currently on the 16.1 series firmware is that it?

Yes 19.3 is still a beta release so not totally risk free but the current version looks to be stable and will get attention for any bugs and improvements.

The decision is yours of course.
