Slower FTP with new modem

Post by paulg » Thu Sep 23, 2021 17:03

Hi all,

I have got a new router (Netcom, NF18MESH) and my FTP transfer speed (using Filezilla) has dropped from about 40-50 Mib/s on my previous router to about 10 Mib/s. Logic suggests it is an issue with the router. The route is laptop to router (173/173 (Mbps) wifi) - router to Beyonwiz V2 ethernet (10/100/1000Mbps). Any advice on what I might need to modify on the router? (assuming that is the issue).

Thanks, Paul.

I had a similar problem some time back with my U4 - the upload speed was of the level I get on one of my T2s. Cannot remember doing anything in particular to fix it other than trying different Ethernet cables. One day it just started working. This does not help other than you are not alone in this happening inexplicably.

I assume that you have done the obvious thing and checked the network settings.

I assume you mean MiB/s and not Mib/s.

A wired 100Mbps connection will get you a solid 10-12MiB/s transfer rate to you Wiz, so it looks like there is just a bottleneck on the wireless side of this router. Seeing as you are reporting a 173Mbps connection rate, then considering overheads and actual throughput, this 10MiB/s rate seems like it's about right.

If you wire the Laptop to the router directly, I assume you get the 50MiBs/s speeds back?
If so, then its just the slow wireless connection.

My guess would be bad WiFi connectivity. Check the performance when you move laptop closer to router and try forcing a connection on the 5GHz band.

If this Netcomm is an ISP supplied router, you may want to replace it with something better. Alternatively, use a different WiFi device in AP mode and turn off the WiFi on the Netcomm.
