OK, I think I have the picons for Perth sorted now: 7mate (LCN 73) will get a blank picon, since it's not carrying any actual programming, and 7mateHD (LCN 74) remains unchanged.

Adoxa, in your Rockhampton data, it seems that 7 Rockhampton has been re-placed completely by 7 HD Rockhampton. Is that correct, and do you know whether it's the same for the rest of regional Queensland? Can anyone else confirm?

Yep, we only have 7HD (MPEG2 1440x1080). Presumably other areas are the same, but I couldn't say for sure.

I'll assume it's the same for all of regional Queensland and fix it if necessary.

Here is a test version of the picon setup that
  • Gives the correct picon 7twoHD in Qld regionals.
  • Changes the 7mate picon blank for Qld regionals & Perth to reflect the fact that that channel lo longer broadcasts content.
  • Gives the correct picon to 7HD for Qld regionals.
  • Changes the service type from MPEG4 to MPEG3 for TVSN Rockhampton.
It also includes all other updates to the picon setup made since the 20211010 firmware release.

If you're in one of the affected regions (regional Qld and Perth), you will need to rescan, unless you have rescanned recently (e.g. to test the 2022-12-03 test version).

These changes are done by patching the scan files I have based only on a single scan sets (thanks Adoxa) and other information from Grumpy_Geoff (thanks). Please let me know if there are any problems with the changes.

If you have an earlier test version of the picon setup installed, uninstall it before installing this one.

The install/uninstall instructions assume that you know how to copy files onto your T/U/V series PVR and how to connect to and use its command-line interface.

Making mistakes in doing the install or uninstall may affect the stability of the PVR. If you mess things up, re-install the firmware from USB.

You need to follow the uninstall steps below before doing any online firmware update!

Assuming you're doing this on a T4, copy both attached files to root (/) on the T4, then log in to the T4 and:

Code: Select all

cd /
mv picon picon.bak
mv piconlcd piconlcd.bak
tar xf maskPicons-2022-12-08.tgz
tar xf lcdPicons-2022-12-08.tgz
Then restart the T4 GUI.

If you use xvf instead of xf in the tar commands it will print out the file names as they extract. There will be a lot of them, about 500 for each command. I don't usually bother.

To go back to the original picons, log into the T4 and:

Code: Select all

cd /
rm -r picon maskPicons-2022-12-08.tgz
rm -r piconlcd lcdPicons-2022-12-08.tgz
mv picon.bak picon
mv piconlcd.bak piconlcd
Then restart the T4 GUI.

If you're testing on something other than a T4, leave out all the commands with lcd in them, and don't bother downloading lcdPicons-2022-12-08.tgz and copying it to the box. It doesn't matter if you do change them, but they won't have any effect - they're the picon setup for the T4's OLED graphical front panel.

Please let me know if there are any problems. If nothing's been reported in a few days, I'll push the changes to the picon repository.

Thanks in advance to everyone who tries it out!

Ah, no, you've actually removed those services altogether (at least for Rockhampton).

I've updated the attached files in my original post that should fix the problems that Adoxa had with Rockhampton.

As I suspected, the problem was with the code that tries to avoid making the patches to scan files that don't need them.

If you've already tried out the 2022-12-07 version, could you please check this one to make sure that my changes to fix the Rockhampton issues haven't affected other regions? Don't forget that you need to uninstall the old version before installing the new one.

That's working for me, now. Here's updated packages. NB: I've split them in two: everyone should install picons; T4 users should also install picons-lcd.

Thanks for confirming that I've fixed the Rockhampton picons.

Thanks, too, for posting the packages. If anyone who's installed one of my picon test setups and wants to do the installation using the packages Adoxa posted, should uninstall the picon test setup first.

I hadn't upated the picons set since the 10-May version, but after uninstalling that and installing this 8-Dec version, I have the 7bravo picon, 7mate without picon (as per design), and 7TWO is still intact.

@prl, did you want a Sydney scan? I'm afraid I'm down in Melbourne until x-mas but could do one on my return if you would still like one.

Hi, Steve, thanks for the offer, but I've been able to make the changes without needing to get extensive scan data, so I don't need a Sydney scan this time.

I have committed the new picon setup to the picon repository, but for the forseeable future, the only way to install it is through my test version posted here, of from adoxa's unofficial feed site: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=15206

Hi All,

openATV users will automatically get Prl's picon updates as part of the normal openATV feeds. I suspect that OpenViX also still offers the picons as well. (I don't know as I am now an openATV developer.)

Regards,
Ian.

Current picons are now available via the official picon feed in 19.3_20211010 installations.

10 Shake is due to rebrand as Nickelodeon Channel from 1 August.

Has anyone spotted what logo Ten will be using for the rebranded channel?

There's a video at their own announcement, which I didn't view, but the still suggests the "splat" and "nickelodeon" text.

Now that I've done a scan in Canberra, it seems that gecko has infested beyond the regions that used to carry SpreeTV (Adelaide, Brisbane, Central Coast, Geelong, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, Sunshine Coast & Sydney).

Has anyone else noticed gecko turning up without a picon when they rescanned to get Nickelodeon?

If so, what region and what is the gecko serviceref? You can get the serviceref by changing channel to gecko, and then going to MENU>Information>Service>Service reference. The important bits are fields 4-6, i.e the "Y" fields in in 1:0:X:Y:Y:Y:EEEE0000:0:0:0:. For Canberra, the whole gecko serviceref is 1:0:16:8EA:807:320C:EEEE0000:0:0:0:, and the bit I need is 8EA:807:320C (or you can post the whole thing).

Yes, Peter. It looks like gecko is another dedicated shopping channel, so we won't be watching it. Here's the service reference for Launceston: 1:0:16:9F3:903:320B:EEEE0000:0:0:0:

Did you find a suitable Nickelodeon logo? There's now one on the TV guide at: https://www.ontvtonight.com/au/guide/

Here's the direct link to the file:

To get the serviceref for a channel, you need to change channel to the channel (gecko in this case) first, then get MENU>Information>Service>Service reference. I missed out that first step in my post.

It would have done at a pinch, but I found a 1391 x 1046 version on the Freeview pages. The "splat" in the Freeview version is also solid colour rather than the lines in the OnTVTonight one. Solid colour is a bit more robust when I scale it to fit the size I need for picons. The Freeview one also has while lettering, which is a bit clearer.

This is what I'll be using in the picon setup (but with a transparent background, not black - in the forum you can't see all the white lettering if the background is transparent):

Re: Request for updates for channel picons

Post by prl » Thu Aug 03, 2023 16:23

I've hit a bit of a roadblock with committing my changes to the picon setup to the picon repository. I haven't user my Bitbucket repositories for a while, and when I went to commit my first set of changes, I found that I'd been logged out. I managed to log back in, but found that I've been logged in to the new Altassian cloud Bitbucket with a new username, which has no write access to any of the old repositories that I used to work with.

I can't find a way to log in with my old username (the login is now with email address, not user name). It looks like I might be able to copy my old repositories into my new cloud account, but I still won't be able to do any commits to the master Beyonwiz picon repository.

I've been trying to ignore all the Altassian "cloud" stuff so far, and it seems that that was a mistake.

Does anyone have any idea what I need to do, and/or what peteru needs to do, if anything, so that I can get the commits to the picon repository to work?

Don't create a new account. Get in touch with Atlassian support and get them to help you with continuing using the account you've been using previously.

Also, if you have set up ssh keys (and you probably did, in order to be able to push changes), these should continue working. Just be aware that BitBucket server keys have been rotated in the last month or so. You might need to delete the BitBucket entries from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts

I tried submitting a query at https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/ while logged in to my "new" account, but when I clicked on the "Submit report request" button, I got the ever so wonderfully helpful error message "Something went wrong, please try submitting your request again."

Repeated pressing of the button didn't help.

I tried submitting the query first under "My account", and then under "Technical issues and bugs". Both had the same result.

Is there some better way to contact Altassian support?

Try this simple page. You will probably want to select "Account Help".

If you can not get through their website gauntlet and want to talk to a person, try:

Atlassian
Sydney (Global HQ)

Level 6, 341 George Street,
Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia
+61 2 9262 1443

If nothing else, they might give you a useful email address.

I was able to send a query that way, so thanks again. I'll let you know how it went when I get a reply.

I got a prompt reply from Altassian, and it made me realise that the problem was operator error. I have now logged back in to my Bitbucket workspace.

I've incorporated my Canberra scan data and the Launceston scan data that samuelg posted into the picon setup, and I've switched all other picons for the old 10SHAKE channel to nickelodeon and commited them to my clone of the picon repository (not yet publicly available).

I'd like to add the picon for gecko for regions that don't yet have it, but I don't have enough information to do it for some regions.

Could people please post servicerefs gecko for:
Any of the regions on the NSW coast, Newcastle or further north.
Any of the NSW, Vic or Qld regions where Ten is carried by Southern Cross (e.g Wagga, Wollongong, Orange, South Coast NSW, Ballarat, Bendigo, Gippsland, Townsville, Wide Bay, Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast)

If you're in one of those regions and still don't have gecko after doing a service scan, that's useful information for me, too.

You can get the serviceref by changing channel to gecko, and then going to MENU>Information>Service>Service reference. The important bits are fields 4-6, i.e the "Y" fields in in 1:0:X:Y:Y:Y:EEEE0000:0:0:0:.

I think I only need about two servicerefs from each of the groups of regions to work out what I need. I can't get any useful information from FreeTV, they haven't updated their service information tables since Sep 2021.

Thanks. My guess from Canberra data about how the gecko numbering goes was wrong. A couple more servicerefs from the Southern Cross regions would be nice, to confirm it.

Thanks, blip.

The serviceref you posted confirms that I've probably got the changes correct for gecko in the areas served by SOuthern Cross.

Unfortunately, I just committed my changes to the main repository, but I'll do another commit to include your new scan data.

I have committed the new changes to the picon setup to the Beyonwiz picon repository.

It includes:
Switching the picon for 10Shake to nickelodeon, to follow the content change in the channel.
Adding the picon for gecko in Tasmania and in the regions in Vic, NSW, ACT & Qld where Ten is carried by Southern Cross Austereo.
Updated the scan data for Canberra, Launceston (thanks, samuelg) and Orange (thanks, blip).

If gecko has been added in other regions, like the NSW north coast (Newcastle and further north) or in other parts of Queensland, I'll commit updates when I get the service reference information that I requested in posting.php?mode=reply&f=42&t=9355#pr201669

NB: this, by itself, doesn't make a picon firmware update available. Peteru needs to create the update and make it available on the feeds (or adoxa, if you're getting updates from his feed).

If people urgently want the picons, I can post the .tar files here so that they can be installed manually.

Should be available via the standard picon feed now.
