Unstable Skip and FF ts File Playback Positioning

When I play back ts files that I have downloaded from my Beyonwiz to my computer they have unstable skip forward/back and fast forward/back positioning. For example, if I skip forward several minutes to a particular position on the bar graph the position can then change anywhere from +/- 10 seconds to +/- 3 or 4 minutes from the selected position. Skip and FF work perfectly on the originally recorded tvwiz files. This occurs regardless of whether or not the program has been edited or even whether it is in ts or mpeg format. Is there a solution to get accurate stable skip and FF positioning?

Hi Bernien,

Is the problem with playing back those .TS files via the network on your Beyonwiz or playing those files on something else?

While I am at it, please describe your network technology / infrastructure interconnecting the various devices.

The problem occurs when playing back from the computer to the beyonwiz over the network and also when playing back directly from the beyonwiz after I have edited and transferred the file back to the beyonwiz so it is unlikely to have anything to do with the network. I have a D-Link DHP-306AV Powerline AV Network between my beyonwiz and computer. Could the problem have something to do with the time stamping in the file?

How are you editing the ts file ie the software used?

Editing is normally done with VideoReDo TVSuite V4, but I have tried ProjectX and VideoStudio Pro X6 with the same result. However the problem occurs even with and un-edited file played over the network.

Beyonwiz native format has an index table that helps it to do skips.

Do the problem symptoms change if you directly connect the Beyonwiz to the PC via a traditional wired network?

It's a while since I visited the set up pages of my Wiz. Isn't there a a separate skip setting page for playing media files?
Have you set this up?

Answers to some of the questions above.
1. I don't have a hard wired Ethernet cable network. However, my Powerline AV Network is pretty much equivalent.
2. If I download a native tvwiz file to my computer and play it back over the network the problem does not occur. However, I have no way of editing a tvwiz file on my computer so this is not of any use.
3. I have my skip buttons set for 60 seconds and 10 seconds forward and back which work perfectly on native tvwiz files but are unstable for ts (edited or not) and mpeg files.

Most times I edit out ads, top and tail then watch a program beginning to end without skips or FFs so it is not a problem then. It is only when I have a program that I don't like a segment of that I try to skip forward but due to the way it jumps around it is often an impossible task. The problem seems to get worse with the length of the program.

Hi Bernien,

Can you please verify the problem while using a wired network connection. Powerline AV is not always as stable as a directly wired network.

Skips are done by simple seeks in the file. The tvwiz "file format" has an index that makes this process a bit more accurate, but for plain old transport stream it's just an estimate, which will exhibit greater errors with variable bit rates and large files. In theory, it would be possible to use the existing method and then hone in on the exact target spot based on the embedded time stamp and using a binary search algorithm with some small error term, but you'd probably find that this would introduce an unacceptable delay. For file formats without an index, it's a trade-off between simplicity+speed vs. complexity+accuracy. Unsurprisingly, the Beyonwiz programmers opted for simple and quick, but not accurate.

I think that may be the answer to my problem (but not the solution). Maybe I was expecting too much and the Beyonwiz is just not capable of to the second accuracy on skips in ts and mpeg files. Native tvwiz files with inbuilt indexing are fine however.

Try copying the file to a usb drive and playing directly from the BW. If it plays, skips etc normally then you could point to the network as the issue.

I have tried all of the following with a ts file and they all have the same erratic skip and FF problem.

1. Streaming over the network from the computer to the Beyonwiz
2. Copying back from the computer to the Beyonwiz over the network and playing from the Beyonwiz
3. Copying from the computer onto a USB stick and playing from the USB stick

It is obviously not a network problem but a Beyonwiz indexing problem.

For programs of less than one hour the problem is not too bad, usually less than +/- 30 seconds, but for longer programs of two hours or more trying to move around by skip or FF can be quite frustrating with up to +/- 3 or 4 minutes jump after completion of skip and it can go either way.

As mentioned before, skip and FF works perfectly to the second on native tvwiz files. Only ts and mpeg files are the problem.

It is a while since I used the BW file player, but my recollection is that any playable file with a bitrate over 3000 Kbps could present some playback difficulties for the BW. My solution was to re-encode mpeg TS or PS output from VideoReDo to maximum 1500 Kbps video bitrate XviD or AVC. These files could be streamed sucessfully across a network.

Short of doing that, my suggestion would be to try saving output from VideoReDo in mpeg PS format and playback either from the BW or USB drive. If you have already tried that combination, then take a look at the bitrate of the video file with MediaInfo.
